[Buschke-Lowenstein Tumor associated to nasopharyngeal condillomatosis].

Giant Acuminata Condyloma or Buschke-Lowenstein Tumor (BLT) is a rare disease characterized typically by its perineal location, local aggressiveness and its cauliflower-like aspect. BLT is associated with Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection. Because malignant transformation of BLT is high, radical local excision and histopathological examination are needed. We report a 26-year-old male, seropositive for HIV with giant verrucous lesions in the inguinal, perineal, suprapubic and genital area. Rectosismoidoscopy revealed anal canal involvement. Oropharyngeal papillomatosis was also found. Wide

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma masquerading as TMJ orofacial pain.

A 50-year-old white woman was referred to the emergency room of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey with a major complaint of right facial pain of 3 months' duration. A comprehensive intraoral and extraoral examination was performed. She reported a limited mandibular opening and the need for a soft diet for approximately 1 month. Her medical history was noncontributory. The examiner, suspecting a lesion because of the lack of response to masseteric injection and the patient's ongoing report of facial numbness, referred the patient for imaging. A CT scan and MRI revealed a la

Thyroid toxicity after radiotherapy of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze retrospectively the risk factors for occurrence of thyroid toxicity after radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal cancer and to demonstrate the necessity of a long-term post-therapeutic screening. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 1993 and 2004, 239 patients with non-metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma were treated by conventional radiotherapy with or without chemotherapy. Radiotherapy was delivered by a standard fractionation (2 Gy/fraction, 5 fractions/week) for 157 patients and hyperfractionation (1.6 Gy/fraction, 2 fractions/day, 5 days/week) for 82 patients. An evaluation of t

The changing surgical management of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

The management of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) has changed during the last decades but it still continues to be a challenge for the multidisciplinary head and neck surgical team. The aim of this study was to review the used treatment approach and outcome of JNA in a single institution series of 27 patients diagnosed and treated during the years 1970-2009. All patients were male, with the median age of 17 years (range 11-33 years). Surgery was used as the primary treatment in every case. Surgical approaches varied, transpalatal approach (N = 14) being the most common approach used

Bilateral vascular supply in juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibromas.

OBJECTIVES: Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a rare, benign tumor of the nasopharynx, exclusively affecting males in their teens and twenties. Historically, it has been thought that JNAs primarily receive their blood supply from the ipsilateral external carotid system. We demonstrate in our case series and literature review that bilateral vascular supply in these tumors is, in fact, very common. STUDY DESIGN: Case series and literature review. METHODS: We present four consecutive cases of JNA in a three-year period from a major tertiary care center. A literature review on the to

An unusual case of epistaxis-juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

BACKGROUND: Epistaxis is a common complaint seen in the younger population. Its etiology is typically from the anterior nares, although we present a case of epistaxis from an uncommon source-juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma. Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a highly vascular, benign, yet locally invasive tumor that occurs in preadolescent males. OBJECTIVES: To illustrate a case of epistaxis from an uncommon source. CASE REPORT: A 21-year-old man with a past medical history of allergic rhinitis presented to the Emergency Department (ED) after 6 months of intermittent yet wors

[Cause of epistaxis in patients irradiated for nasopharyngeal carcinoma].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the cause of epistasis in patients irradiated for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. METHOD: Seventy nasopharyngeal carcinoma cases with epistasis after radiotherapy were retrospectively analyzed. RESULT: The causes of epistasis were local nasopharyngeal carcinoma recurrent 34.3% (24/70), pseudoaneurysm 14.3% (10/70) and nasopharyngeal crust 51.4% (36/70). Seven cases with local recurrent, 3 cases with pseudoaneurysm and 1 cases with nasopharyngeal crust and osteoradionecrosis died of intractable epistasis. CONCLUSION: Epistasis in patients irradiated for nasopharyngeal car

Respiratory distress secondary to nasopharyngeal glial heterotopia.

Nasal glial heterotopia (nasal glioma) is a rare congenital malformation of neural origin. We present a newborn baby with life-threatening respiratory distress secondary to nasopharyngeal glial heterotopia that obstructed the nasopharyngeal or nasal airway. A high degree of suspicion, early diagnosis and surgical management are essential to cure this rare and potentially life-threatening disorder.

Osteoradionecrosis of external auditory canal in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is one of the most serious complications of radiotherapy of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). ORN rarely occurs in the external auditory canal. METHODS: This is a retrospective review of 11 NPC patients who had ORN in the external auditory canal. Exposed necrotic bone over the external auditory canal was the diagnostic hallmark. Three patients wore hearing aids and 2 had had previous otological surgery. ORN was detected between 2 and 15 years after radiation therapy (mean 8 years). The radiation dose ranged from 6480 to 8460 rads in 8 patients. RESULTS: The

Nasopharyngeal hairy polyp with recurrence in the middle ear.

A 6-year-old girl was referred to The Johns Hopkins Hospital for a suspected congenital cholesteatoma. The lesion was determined to be a recurrence of a nasopharyngeal hairy polyp removed in the postnatal period. Simple excision is normally regarded as curative: malignant transformation and local recurrence do not occur. Our case is exceptional in that incomplete excision of the nasopharyngeal polyp was followed by re-growth and extension into the middle ear over a 6-year period. Thus, not all hairy polyps are static lesions. Indeed, this case documents progressive growth of a hairy polyp duri

[Clinical characters of aged nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients].

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: The influence of age on treatment outcome and survival of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients has seldom been reported. This study was to explore the clinical characters of aged NPC patients. METHODS: A total of 754 patients with histopathologically proven NPC from Jan. 1, 2000 to May 1, 2002 were divided to adult group (<60 years old, 647 patients) and aged group (> or =60 years old, 107 patients). The difference of disease characters, treatment patterns, and other complications between these two groups were analyzed. The influence of age on survival was analyzed

Diagnosis and surgical treatment of a nasopharyngeal cyst in a dog.

A 21-month-old boxer dog was presented with clinical signs caused by nasopharyngeal obstruction. A mineralised mass in the nasopharynx was identified by radiography. Computed tomography allowed accurate anatomical localisation of the cystic lesion and identification of an ossified wall. Surgical removal of the mass by a ventral approach resulted in complete resolution of clinical signs. Histopathological examination strongly suggested that the cyst was derived from remnants of Rathke's pouch.

Nasopharyngeal intracavitary brachytherapy: the controversy of T2b disease.

BACKGROUND: Locally persistent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) carries an increased risk of local failure if additional treatment is not given. It has been shown that intracavitary brachytherapy is effective in the treatment of patients with T1 and T2a NPC, although its role in the treatment of T2b disease had remained uncertain. The objectives of the current study were to evaluate the outcomes of patients with T2b, locally persistent NPC who were treated with high-dose-rate (HDR) intracavitary brachytherapy and to explore whether routine brachytherapy boost could improve the local control of p

Construction of tree models for pathogenesis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Pathogenesis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a multistep and multipathway process that cannot be fully explained by a fixed linear progression model. We used distance-based and branching-tree methods to construct more general tree-like models for NPC carcinogenesis from 170 comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) samples previously published in five smaller studies. Imbalances were classified into "overlap regions," each containing the most commonly gained or lost band on each chromosome arm as well as adjacent bands that were gained or lost almost as often. The chromosome abnormalities a
