Grover Disease With Epidermal Dysmaturation Pattern: A Common Histopathologic Finding.

BACKGROUND: Grover disease is an entity whose diagnosis is based on clinicopathologic correlation. Histopathologically, focal acantholysis is the most common finding. In some cases, there is prominent squamous atypia which can prove to be very challenging and the lesion may be confused with an epidermal neoplasm. OBJECTIVE: To report on atypical histopathological changes in Grover disease and to provide helpful clues to differentiate between the epidermal atypia seen in some cases of Grover disease and epithelial neoplasms. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We analyzed 33 cases of Grover disease histolo

[Diagnosis and treatment of benign eyelid tumors].

BACKGROUND: Benign tumors of the eyelids are frequent entities. They are often cause for cosmetic concern or can lead to irritation of the ocular surface. The differentiation from premalignant or malignant eyelid tumors is particularly important. In most cases this can be done clinically; however, in some cases histological evaluation is warranted. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to characterize the most important benign tumors of the eyelid and to ascertain when a histological examination is necessary. Furthermore, fundamental treatment procedures are discussed. METHODS: This narrativ

Successful treatment of early cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma with hypofractionated radiation therapy in an African lion (Panthera leo).

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a slow growing but locally invasive neoplasm, most commonly caused by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Whilst SCC accounts for 15% of skin tumours in domesticated cats, cutaneous SCC in non-domesticated felids (apart from captive snow leopards) appears to be uncommon, with only three reports in the literature to date. In this report, a captive African lion (Panthera leo) presented with two ulcerative lesions on the nasal planum. Histopathology of the lesions revealed epidermal keratinocyte dysplasia and neoplastic basal- and supra-bas

Peripheral ameloblastoma of the gingiva.

Peripheral Ameloblastoma (PA) is a benign odontogenic tumor, arising from the cell rest of Serres, reduced enamel epithelium and basal cells of the surface epithelium. Peripheral ameloblastoma is a rare odontogenic neoplasm occurring commonly in the mandibular gingiva. PA clinically resembles other peripherally occurring lesions like pyogenic granuloma, peripheral ossifying fibroma, peripheral giant cell granuloma, and squamous papilloma. The recurrence rate of PA is 16-19% which demands a straight follow up. We report a case of recurrent peripheral ameloblastoma occurring in a 72-year old mal

Outcome and complications of extended cranial-base resection requiring microvascular free-tissue transfer.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the complications of extensive cranial-base resection requiring free-tissue transfer (FTT) and the effect of these resections on local control and survival among patients with malignant neoplasms of the skull base. BACKGROUND: Before the advent of FTT, cranial-base surgery was often limited by our inability to adequately repair defects comprising communication between the central nervous system and upper aerodigestive tract. The use of FTT in cranial-base resections was therefore assessed to determine whether the improved procedure (ie, extensive resections) would imp

An unusual cause of a common presentation: a case of metastatic basal cell carcinoma.

Metastasis of basal cell carcinoma is exceedingly rare and usually not considered in the differential diagnosis of neck lumps. We present a case highlighting the importance of a thorough history and consideration of metastatic basal cell carcinoma in patients with a basaloid metastasis and an unknown primary.

Disruption of constitutive CXCR4 oligomers impairs oncogenic properties in lymphoid neoplasms.

The chemokine receptor CXCR4 is overexpressed in many cancers and contributes to pathogenesis, disease progression, and resistance to therapies. CXCR4 is known to form oligomers, but the potential functional relevance in malignancies remains elusive. Using a nanobody-based BRET method, we demonstrate that oligomerization of endogenous CXCR4 on lymphoid cancer cell lines correlates with enhanced expression levels. Specific disruption of CXCR4 oligomers reduced basal cell migration and prosurvival signaling via changes in the phosphoproteome, indicating the existence of constitutive CXCR4 oligom

Protein expression of MMP-2 and MT1-MMP in actinic keratosis, squamous cell carcinoma of the skin, and basal cell carcinoma.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC) are 2 skin neoplasms with distinct potentials to invasion and metastasis. Actinic keratosis (AK) is a precursor lesion of SCC. Immunohistochemistry was performed to evaluate the expression of MMP-2 and MT1-MMP in samples of BCC (n = 29), SCC (n = 12), and AK (n = 13). The ratio of positive cells to total cells was used to quantify the staining. Statistical significance was considered under the level P < .05. We found a higher expression of MMP-2 in tumor stroma and parenchyma of SCC as compared to BCC. The expression of this protein

Three neoplasms in a Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra): malignant melanoma, trichoblastoma and mammary gland adenoma.

An eighteen-year-old female Eurasian otter became emaciated and died. Necropsy examination revealed nose and thoracic cutaneous masses, abdominal subcutaneous mass, and multiple nodules in the liver and lungs. Malignant melanoma was found in the nose cutaneous mass and to have metastasized to the liver, lungs, kidneys, adrenal glands, mammary glands and left mandibular lymph node. The neoplastic cells were labeled for vimentin, melanoma, and S100. The cutaneous mass in the thoracic area consisted of spindle shaped neoplastic epithelial cells and was diagnosed as trichoblastoma. Mammary gland a

Trends of basal cell carcinoma at the Centre of Dermatovenereology of Vilnius University.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Basal cell carcinoma is the most common locally invasive malignant epidermal neoplasm in humans and its incidence has increased over the last decades worldwide, especially among the Caucasian population. Basal cell carcinoma accounts for about 75% of all skin cancers. Incidence data on basal cell carcinoma is sparse because traditional cancer registries often do not register these tumours. In Lithuania, patients with skin cancer and melanoma were traditionally treated in centralized oncological institutes. From 2006, the Centre of Dermatovenereology at Vilnius Univ

Pigmented Basal Cell Carcinoma in Skin of Color: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Though basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is most often studied in Fitzpatrick Skin Types (FST) I-III, BCC in skin of color (SOC) is characterized by unique clinical features and a propensity toward pigmentation. While cutaneous malignancy occurs with decreased frequency in FST IV - VI, the diagnosis is generally associated with disproportionately increased morbidity and mortality. Accordingly, it is increasingly vital for dermatologists to recognize clinical presentations of skin cancer in individuals with SOC to improve outcomes and mitigate gaps in care. OBJECTIVE: We systematically re

Basal cell carcinomas of the lips: a case series and review of the literature.

The aim of this review was to characterise the clinical features of basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) occurring on the lips. A review of the literature was performed using PubMed to identify reports of BCCs of the lips. Additionally, a retrospective search of the archives of our diagnostic oral pathology service was performed for BCCs diagnosed between 2000-2023. There were 27 BCCs of the lips identified in the literature review. These tumours typically presented clinically as bleeding, eroded, crusted, ulcerated and/or centrally depressed nodules. Treatment included surgical excision, Mohs microgr

Recurrent Deeply Invasive Basal Cell Carcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequent skin malignancy worldwide. The majority of BCCs grow slowly and have a low metastatic potential. However, they can be destructive to surrounding tissues since they are locally invasive. METHODS: This case report was conducted on a 78-year-old woman complaining of a solid lump on the left side of the neck and nonhealing lesion. Three years earlier, she had BCC on the same site. Clinical and radiographic examinations were made. The biopsy specimens revealed that it is a recurrent BCC. In operating room, during blunt tissue dissection
