Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumour mixed connective tissue variant: report of three cases with unusual histological findings.

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumour mixed connective tissue variant (PMTMCT) is a rare tumour occurring in bone and soft tissue that usually behaves in a benign manner. Elaboration of biologically active substances by this tumour gives rise to a paraneoplastic syndrome known as oncogenic osteomalacia, manifesting clinically as bone pain, generalized weakness and pathological fractures. Recognition of PMTMCT and its associated syndrome is important, as resection of the tumour in most instances results in prompt resolution of symptoms. Previously reported cases of this tumour have emphasized the con

Well-Differentiated Extraosseous Chondrosarcoma Arising of Gall Bladder: A Detailed Case Report.

This article reports a rare case of extraosseous myxoid chondrosarcoma originating from the gallbladder. The patient, a 50-year-old female, presented with recurrent right upper quadrant abdominal pain for over two months, with worsening symptoms in the month prior to admission. Before hospitalization, enhanced computed tomography (CT) of the upper abdomen performed at a local hospital suggested a malignant gallbladder tumor (gallbladder cancer) with lymphadenopathy near the hepatic portal, as well as chronic cholecystitis with gallstones. Upon admission, whole-abdomen enhanced CT and liver-enh

Conjunctival Stromal Tumor: Report of 2 New Cases and Review of the Literature.

Conjunctival stromal tumor (COST) is an emerging entity with only a limited number of cases reported in the literature. In this report, we describe 2 additional cases, review the accumulative clinical and histopathological features and expand on the immunophenotypic property of this entity. COST appears to have a sporadic presentation, affecting both sexes and patients of variable ethnicity and age group and predominantly occurring on the bulbar conjunctiva as a slow-growing asymptomatic or slightly tender mass-like lesion. Histopathologically, COST is characterized by singly dispersed spindle

Bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation (Nora's lesion) in the hand.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to review our experience with a benign surface bone lesion referred to as bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation (BPOP) or Nora's lesion, named for the pathologist who described it in 1983. The lesion may be confused with a variety of tumors, particularly solitary osteochondromas, which are rare. METHODS: The files in the Department of Pathology at the Hospital for Joint Diseases were reviewed over a 21-year period for all surface bone lesions involving the tubular bones in the hand. There were a total of 10 cases of BPOP compared with only a

Intrapericardial solitary fibrous tumor: A case report and review of literature.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a mesenchymal neoplasm mostly originates from pleura, but rarely from other parts of the body including pericardium. We report a case of a 44-year-old woman with dyspnea and intermittent edema in whom a large intrapericardial mass was discovered by echocardiography. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a focal pericardial calcification in right AV grove with pressure on right ventricle and right atrial, with no connection to cardiac chambers. Histopathological findings after complete resection of the mass revealed fibroconnective tissue with heavy calcification and

[Morphogenesis of cervical cancer].

The origination and development of cervical cancer occurs in the tumor field, which includes cellular and non-cellular components of the connective tissue and vessels adjacent to the epithelium. During each of these phases of cancer growth alterations in these components may be observed within certain boundaries which widen with the tumor progression. A removal of the neoplasm within the limits of the unchanged, as compared with the normality, components of the stroma and vessels would guarantee against the recurrence and is a reliable criterion of the radicality of surgery being a minimum for

Interstitial cells of Cajal as precursors of gastrointestinal stromal tumors.

Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) are implicated in the regulation of gut peristalsis and are immunostained by antibodies against Kit (CD117), a tyrosine kinase receptor. Most gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumors (GIMTs) are of uncertain histogenesis, although many are CD34-positive. CD34 was found to colocalize with vimentin (Vim) and the Kit-positive networks of cells within and around neural plexi, indicating that ICC can be Vim- and CD34-positive. ICCs appear to be the only Kit+CD34+Vim+ cell in the gut. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues from 43 GIMTs were immunostained for Kit, CD3

Intracranial Phosphaturic Mesenchymal Tumor Detected by 68 Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT.

A 68 Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT scan was conducted to locate the causative tumor responsible for suspected tumor-induced osteomalacia in a 56-year-old woman. The PET/CT images showed a focus in the right occipital region. Subsequent MRI showed an extra-axial nodule in the right occipital region, mimicking a meningioma. Although rare, an intracranial phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor was still suspected because of the typical clinical settings. Finally, phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor was confirmed by the postoperative pathology.

Breast Metastasis of Extraskeletal Myxoid Chondrosarcoma: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma is a unique and distinct clinicopathological entity in terms of its origin, morphology, and biologic behavior. Despite being a slow-growing tumor, it has a high rate of local recurrences and history of metastases to uncommon sites like the mandible, liver, retroperitoneum, right ventricle, pancreas, and central nervous system. Here, we report a very unique case of extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma that metastasized to the breast, which itself is a very rare site for metastases. CASE REPORT: A 58-year-old woman presented with a large, firm, and

[Tumor-induced osteomalacia caused by a late-revealing phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor].

INTRODUCTION: Osteomalacia is associated with diffuse pain and multiple fractures and therefore, diagnosis and treatment of this condition are necessary. Clinicians should be aware of an uncommon mechanism of osteomalacia where hypophosphataemia is secondary to renal phosphaturia because of the production by a mesenchymal phosphaturic tumor of FGF-23. This tumor should be localized and removed to cure this tumor-induced osteomalacia. OBSERVATION: A 70-year-old female patient was admitted to explore diffuse pain caused by multiple fractures secondary to osteomalacia. Despite vitamin D suppleme

Histopathologic and Molecular Characterization of Uterine Leiomyoma-like Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor: Comparison to Molecular Subtypes of Uterine Leiomyoma.

Uterine leiomyoma (UL) is a common benign neoplasm which can sometimes be difficult to differentiate from the uterine inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) based on morphology alone. IMT is a myofibroblastic/fibroblastic neoplasm which has typically been considered to be rare in the uterus. Its clinical behavior is usually indolent although aggressive variants exist. The majority of IMTs harbor genomic rearrangement of anaplastic lymphoma kinase ( ALK ), while ALK fusion has not been thus far detected in ULs. We analyzed 2263 ULs of which 9 (0.4%) had tyrosine-kinase activation. Seven of th

Oncogenic osteomalacia of the cervical spine: a rare case of curative resection and reconstruction.

Oncogenic osteomalacia (OO) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome, with only 100 reported cases in the literature. The majority of OO-associated mesenchymal tumors are due to a lesion called phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor, mixed connective tissue (PMTMCT) variant. There have been only 6 reported cases of OO of the spine. With this paper the authors present a case of OO of the cervical spine in a patient who initially presented with multiple pathological fractures of unknown cause, and who eventually underwent staged C-5 spondylectomy followed by circumferential stabilization. Resection of the cerv

Soft Tissue Sarcoma of Extremities: Descriptive Epidemiological Analysis According to National Population-based Study.

BACKGROUND: Soft-Tissue Sarcoma (STS) is a heterogeneous group of neoplasms of mesenchymal origin, occurring in connective tissues. According to previously conducted studies, STS accounts for approximately 1% and 7-%15% of adult and pediatric malignancies, respectively. Almost 50%-60% of sarcomas arise from extremities and usually present as a large painless or rarely painful soft-tissue mass. The present study aimed to describe the epidemiology of soft-tissue sarcomas, especially in the Iranian population. METHODS: This epidemiological study of limb soft-tissue sarcoma was conducted based on

Identification of Novel/Rare EWSR1 Fusion Partners in Undifferentiated Mesenchymal Neoplasms.

Recurrent gene fusions (GFs) in translocated sarcomas are recognized as major oncogenic drivers of the disease, as well as diagnostic markers whose identification is necessary for differential diagnosis. EWSR1 is a 'promiscuous' gene that can fuse with many different partner genes, defining different entities among a broad range of mesenchymal neoplasms. Molecular testing of EWSR1 translocation traditionally relies on FISH assays with break-apart probes, which are unable to identify the fusion partner. Therefore, other ancillary molecular diagnostic modalities are being increasingly adopted fo

Limited segmental resection of symptomatic lower-extremity lymphodystrophic tissue in high-risk patients.

In obese patients, lymphodystrophic tissue can create large masses that are microscopically indistinguishable from chronic lymphedema. This tissue can be disabling, especially in the lower extremities. The tissue is refractory to conservative therapy and is prone to cellulitis and abscess formation. The patients are regarded as being at high risk for surgical complications due to obesity and related illnesses. We report two cases of patients with lesions severely limiting walking. The two patients weighed 490 and 520 lb, respectively. One patient had hypertension and asthma; the other had arrh
