Rice-based oral rehydration solution: a controlled trial in Nepal.

The efficacy of rice-based (50 g/l) oral rehydration solution (ORS) was compared with standard glucose ORS in a randomized controlled trial in 148 children under 5 years of age, suffering from acute watery diarrhoea leading to moderate and severe dehydration. The mean ORS intake in the two groups of children were 141.6 and 205.2 ml/kg/24 hours, for rice ORS and glucose ORS, respectively (P < 0.001). The mean number of diarrhoeal stools in the first 24 hours in children of the rice ORS group was less when compared with the glucose ORS group (5.4 and 6.8/24 hours, respectively; P < 0.001). This

Immunisation against Japanese encephalitis in Nepal: experience of 1152 subjects.

During the summer of 1983, 1152 subjects were immunized against Japanese Encephalitis at BMH Dharan. This was the first use of the BIKEN killed lyophilised vaccine in the British Army. Three doses of 1 ml (0.5 ml for children under 3 years) given 10 days apart produced a protective neutralizing antibody response (titre more than 1:10) in almost 90% of subjects. Two doses of vaccine however seemed inadequate in that less than 40% of subjects seroconverted. Side-effects were minimal and trivial. Studies of neutralizing antibodies before vaccination showed up to 30% of Nepalese subjects tested we…

Seasonal Variation of Butterfly Diversity in Subtropical Urban Forests of Nepal.

Butterflies exhibit seasonal dynamics in diversity and population in response to bioclimatic factors. However, their seasonal diversity remains poorly understood in urban landscapes. Therefore, we examined how butterfly diversity varies across seasons in the urban forests of Pokhara City, located in Nepal's subtropical region. We selected three urban forests-Banpale, Bhadrakali, and Shanti Ban Batika-to sample butterflies. We employed the Pollard Walk Survey method to collect data across all four seasons and analyzed various diversity indices, community composition, and indicator species. We a…

Navigating end-of-life conversations: A reflection on goals of care in Nepal.

Goals of care (GOC) discussions and advance care planning (ACP) emphasize patient's autonomy and dignity in healthcare delivery. These discussions become crucial as individuals approach the terminal phase of their illness, enabling them to make informed decisions about their end-of-life care (EOLC). Globally, there is a rising trend in discussions related to GOC, especially among those with serious or chronic conditions. In Asian countries, including Nepal, cultural factors, family dynamics, and limited awareness among healthcare professionals hinder ACP implementation. Nepal faces challenges …
