Emotional stress and orthodontic tooth movement: effects on apical root resorption, tooth movement, and dental tissue expression of interleukin-1 alpha and calcitonin gene-related peptide immunoreactive nerve fibres in rats.

The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of emotional stress on apical root resorption (ARR) and tooth displacement during orthodontic tooth movement in rats. A further area of interest was to evaluate if the expression of interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1alpha) as well as the density and distribution of peptidergic nerve fibres immunoreactive to calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in the periodontal ligament (PDL) are associated with possible stress-induced changes in root resorption and tooth movement. A total of 52 male Wistar rats, aged 6 weeks, were divided in three experimental and

Implantation of autologous peripheral nerve tissue to the nucleus basalis of Meynert in patients with Parkinson's disease during deep brain stimulation surgery: a 2-year report of safety, feasibility, and clinical response.

OBJECTIVE: Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by both motor and nonmotor symptoms, including cognitive impairment. Neuronal loss in the nucleus basalis of Meynert (NBM) plays a role in the presentation of cognitive impairment in PD. The implantation of peripheral nerve tissue (PNT) might provide neuroprotective and regenerative capabilities and has shown promising open-label outcomes. The aim of this study was to investigate the safety, feasibility, and clinical outcomes of implanting PNT to the NBM in patients with PD. METHODS: Seven participants with PD underwent bilateral deep brain…

Surgical relief of causalgia with an artificial nerve guide tube: Successful surgical treatment of causalgia (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Type II) by in situ tissue engineering with a polyglycolic acid-collagen tube.

Two patients with causalgia associated with allodynia and finger contracture were treated surgically with a bioresorbable nerve guide tube made from polygycolic acid and collagen: the injured segment of the digital nerve was resected and the resulting gap (25 and 36mm) was bridged with the tube. In both cases, a neuroma was found on the injured nerve and many sprouting branches were. After reconstruction, the causalgia and allodynia disappeared and movement of the fingers recovered during the following 6 months. Functional recovery was objectively identified for 1 year and 9 months. Both patie

Update of pediatric soft tissue tumors with review of conventional MRI appearance-part 2: vascular lesions, fibrohistiocytic tumors, muscle tumors, peripheral nerve sheath tumors, tumors of uncertain differentiation, and undifferentiated small round cell sarcomas.

There are numerous soft tissue tumors and tumor-like conditions in the pediatric population. Magnetic resonance imaging is the most useful modality for imaging these lesions. Although certain soft tissue lesions exhibit magnetic resonance features characteristic of a specific diagnosis, most lesions are indeterminate, and a biopsy is necessary for diagnosis. We provide a detailed update of soft tissue tumors and tumor-like conditions that occur in the pediatric population, emphasizing each lesion's conventional magnetic resonance imaging appearance, using the recently released 5th edition of t

Apoptosis-Decellularized Peripheral Nerve Scaffold Allows Regeneration across Nerve Gap.

Peripheral nerve injury results in loss of motor and sensory function distal to the nerve injury and is often permanent in nerve gaps longer than 5 cm. Autologous nerve grafts (nerve autografts) utilize patients' own nerve tissue from another part of their body to repair the defect and are the gold standard in care. However, there is a limited autologous tissue supply, size mismatch between donor nerve and injured nerve, and morbidity at the site of nerve donation. Decellularized cadaveric nerve tissue alleviates some of these limitations and has demonstrated success clinically. We previously …

Bridging defects: autologous nerve grafts.

Autologous nerve grafting has been performed since 1876 without success. Since the 1960s, the interfascicular nerve grafting technique has provided a reliable method to bridge very long nerve defects with predictable results. Personal experience of over 40 years has demonstrated that donor site morbidity is minimal if certain precautions are observed. Donor site morbidity does not justify the use of alternative techniques. However, in vast defects like brachial plexus lesions, the number of available autografts is insufficient. We do need alternative techniques like tubulisation, however, not

Engineering Fiber-Based Nervous Tissue Constructs for Axon Regeneration.

Biomaterial-based scaffolds used in nerve conduits including channels for confining regenerating axons and 3-dimensional (3D) gels as substrates for growth have made improvements in models of nerve repair. Many biomaterial strategies, however, continue to fall short of autologous nerve grafts, which remain the current gold standard in repairing severe nerve lesions (<20 mm). Intraluminal nerve conduit fibers have also shown considerable promise in directing regenerating axons in vitro and in vivo and have gained increasing interest for nerve repair. It is unknown, however, how growing axons re

Current and novel polymeric biomaterials for neural tissue engineering.

The nervous system is a crucial component of the body and damages to this system, either by of injury or disease, can result in serious or potentially lethal consequences. Restoring the damaged nervous system is a great challenge due to the complex physiology system and limited regenerative capacity.Polymers, either synthetic or natural in origin, have been extensively evaluated as a solution for restoring functions in damaged neural tissues. Polymers offer a wide range of versatility, in particular regarding shape and mechanical characteristics, and their biocompatibility is unmatched by othe

Decellularized nerve matrix hydrogel scaffolds with longitudinally oriented and size-tunable microchannels for peripheral nerve regeneration.

The scaffolding biomaterials and their internal structures are crucial in constructing growth-permissive microenvironment for tissue regeneration. A functional bioscaffold not only requires sufficient extracellular matrix components, but also provides topological guidance by mimicry of the ultrastructure of the native tissue. In our laboratory, a decellularized nerve matrix hydrogel derived from porcine sciatic nerve (pDNM-G) is successfully prepared, which shows great promise for peripheral nerve regeneration. Herein, longitudinally oriented microchannel structures were introduced into pDNM-G

Peripheral Nerve Regeneration Using a Nerve Conduit with Olfactory Ensheathing Cells in a Rat Model.

BACKGROUND: Autologous nerve grafts are the gold standard treatment for peripheral nerve injury treatment. However, this procedure cannot avoid sacrificing other nerves as a major limitation. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the potential of olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) embedded in a nerve conduit. METHODS: A 10-mm segment of the sciatic nerve was resected in 21 rats, and the nerve injury was repaired with one of the following (n = 7 per group): autologous nerve graft, poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL) conduit and OECs, and PCL conduit only. The consequent effect on nerve regenera

Multichannel Conduits with Fascicular Complementation: Significance in Long Segmental Peripheral Nerve Injury.

Despite the advances in tissue engineering approaches, reconstruction of long segmental peripheral nerve defects remains unsatisfactory. Although autologous grafts with proper fascicular complementation have shown meaningful functional recovery according to the Medical Research Council Classification (MRCC), the lack of donor nerve for such larger defect sizes (>30 mm) has been a serious clinical issue. Further clinical use of hollow nerve conduits is limited to bridging smaller segmental defects of denuded nerve ends (<30 mm). Recently, bioinspired multichannel nerve guidance conduits (NGCs)

Angiogenesis is critical for the exercise-mediated enhancement of axon regeneration following peripheral nerve injury.

Enhancing axon regeneration is a major focus of nerve injury research, and the quality of the surgical nerve repair plays a large role in the aggregate success of nerve regeneration. Additionally, exercise is known to promote successful axon regeneration after surgical nerve repair. In this study, we asked how exercise-induced nerve regeneration is affected when a transected nerve is repaired with or without fibrin glue. Fibrin glue repaired nerves exhibited greater vasculature within the tissue bridge compared to nerves that were intrinsically repaired. Fibrin glue repaired nerves also exhibi
