Neuropathologic evidence of prenatal brain damage, chiefly in cerebral white matter, was found in 25% of infants who died at 7 days of age or less, with a total of ten preterm (16%) and 12 term (48%) infants among the 89 subjects studied. Few clinical features distinguished infants with prenatal injury from those without such injuries. Apgar scores were low, seizures were rare, and acute intracranial hemorrhage occurred equally often in both groups. Few pregnancies were entirely normal, but hydramnios was the only factor that occurred more often in prenatally injured infants, a statistically s

The pathological changes in the brains of seven patients who had been clinically diagnosed as normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) are described and the possible etiological mechanisms are discussed. The pathological findings in all cases consisted of demyelination akin to Binswanger's type of encephalopathy, especially in the frontal lobes. Arteriosclerosis accompanied by occasional organized thrombi and scattered microinfarcts in the periventricular white matter were seen. Focal leptomeningeal fibrosis, diminution of arachnoidal granulations, and non-specific aging processes were noted. Among

We studied the neuropathologic features of a patient with Coffin-Siris syndrome. Two previously reported cases showed Dandy-Walker (D-W) malformations. In the present case there was no evidence of D-W malformation; instead there were hindbrain abnormalities of inferior and medial accessory olives, large arcuate nuclei, heterotopic olivary nuclei, and heterotopic nuclei in the white matter of the cerebellum. Although the hindbrain abnormalities in this case are different from those previously reported, they all have in common an intimate developmental relationship with the same embryological ar

INTRODUCTION: Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are common in Lewy body disease (LBD), but their etiology is poorly understood.
METHODS: In a population-based post mortem study neuropathological data was collected for Lewy body (LB) neuropathology, neurofibrillary tangles (NFT), amyloid beta burden, TDP-43, lacunar infarcts, cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), and hyaline atherosclerosis. Post mortem interviews collected systematic information regarding NPS and cognitive status. A total of 1038 cases were included: no pathology (NP; n = 761), Alzheimer's disease (AD; n = 189), LBD (n = 60), and …

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To understand the role of postinfectious autoimmune vascular inflammation in the pathogenesis of coronavirus disease 2019-related neurological illness caused by the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 virus and its effects on the brain in children and adults.
RECENT FINDINGS: There are a very small number of postmortem neuropathological series of coronavirus disease 2019-related cerebrovascular and parenchymal disease. However, they fall into at least three major categories, with the majority manifesting those of terminal hypoxia, and others demonstrating

Evidence suggests that 24.5%-46.7% (mean 31%) of patients with Parkinson's disease experience an anxiety disorder, a much higher prevalence than in controls. Anxiety does not appear to be a consequence of diagnosis or the motoric symptoms of the disorder and can manifest as Generalised Anxiety Disorder, phobias or panic attacks. At present, the neural underpinnings of anxiety disorders in Parkinson's disease is unknown. Here, we make the novel proposal that the superior colliculus (SC), one component of a rapid, reflexive threat detection system in the brain, consisting of the colliculus, pulv

To an increasing extent, astrocytes are connected with various neuropathologies. Astrocytes comprise of a heterogeneous population of cells with region- and species-specific properties. The frontal cortex exhibits high levels of plasticity that is required for high cognitive functions and memory making this region especially susceptible to damage. Aberrations in the frontal cortex are involved with several cognitive disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease and frontotemporal dementia. Human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) provide an alternative for disease modeling

Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) is a heterogeneous disease entity encompassing a wide variety of histopathological features and genetic backgrounds. The last two decades have seen the discovery of causative genes and the identification of relevant proteins. The current histopathological classification is based on the major types of protein deposition in the brain, and most FTLD cases can be placed into one of three pathological subgroups: FTLD-tau, FTLD-TDP, and FTLD-FUS. Further sub-classification within each subgroup is based on the morphology of neuronal and glial inclusions and le

The aquaporin (AQP) family of water channels are a group of small, membrane-spanning proteins that are vital for the rapid transport of water across the plasma membrane. These proteins are widely expressed, from tissues such as the renal epithelium and erythrocytes to the various cells of the central nervous system. This review will elucidate the basic structure and distribution of aquaporins and discuss the role of aquaporins in various neuropathologies. AQP1 and AQP4, the two primary aquaporin molecules of the central nervous system, regulate brain water and CSF movement and contribute to cy

The emergence of Zika virus in the Americas has followed a pattern that is familiar from earlier epidemics of other viruses, where a new disease is introduced into a human population and then spreads rapidly with important public health consequences. In the case of Zika virus, an accumulating body of recent evidence implicates the virus in the etiology of serious pathologies of the human nervous system, that is, the occurrence of microcephaly in neonates and Guillain-Barré syndrome in adults. Zika virus is an arbovirus (arthropod-borne virus) and a member of the family Flaviviridae, genus Flav

OBJECTIVE: A study was undertaken to examine the neuropathological substrates of cognitive dysfunction and dementia in Parkinson disease (PD).
METHODS: One hundred forty patients with a clinical diagnosis of PD and either normal cognition or onset of dementia 2 or more years after motor symptoms (PDD) were studied. Patients with a clinical diagnosis of dementia with Lewy bodies were excluded. Autopsy records of genetic data and semiquantitative scores for the burden of neurofibrillary tangles, senile plaques, Lewy bodies (LBs), and Lewy neurites (LNs) and other pathologies were used to develo

Benign tremulous parkinsonism, a tremor dominant syndrome with a relatively slow rate of deterioration, is recognized by clinicians although its pathological basis is not well understood. A systematic review of Queen Square Brain Bank donors was carried out to determine the natural history and pathology of individuals who had tremor dominant parkinsonism with mild non-tremor components and minimal gait disability for at least 8 years. We identified 16 cases of pathologically proved benign tremulous Parkinson's disease (PD); another 5 individuals conformed to the definition but did not have the

Mercury and mercurial compounds are among the environmentally ubiquitous substances most toxic to both wildlife and humans. Once released into the environment from both natural and anthropogenic sources, mercury exists mainly as three different molecular species: elemental, inorganic, and organic. Potential health risks have been reported from exposure to all forms; however, of particular concern for human exposure relate to the potent neurotoxic effects of methylmercury (MeHg), especially for the developing nervous system. The general population is primarily exposed to MeHg by seafood consump

In recent years there has been a proliferation of interest in the brain-specific protein S100B, its many physiologic roles, and its behaviour in various neuropathologic conditions. Since the mid-1960s, its wide variety of intracellular and extracellular activities has been elucidated, and it has also been implicated in an increasing number of central nervous system (CNS) disorders. S100B is part of a superfamily of proteins, some of which (including S100B) have been implicated as calcium-dependent regulatory proteins that modulate the activity of effector proteins or cells. S100B is primarily

Nijmegen breakage syndrome (NBS) is an autosomal recessive disorder, due to defects in the NBS1 gene and belongs to the DNA repair disorders. We report neuropathological findings of the first ever recognised case of the about 60 described cases of NBS. This patient showed severe microcephaly with a simplified gyral pattern especially in the frontal lobes. There were no signs of a degenerative disease, or of a primary migration disorder. A bulge on top of the corpus callosum, most probably a very large remnant of the involuting striae longitudinales mediales et laterales, was found. This can be

We investigated clinical and neuropathologic heterogeneity and apolipoprotein E (apoE) genotype in 11 cases of neuropathologically diagnosed corticobasal degeneration (CBD). Although seven of the 11 patients presented with unilateral limb dysfunction, the remaining four patients had less typical presentations including memory loss, behavioral changes, and difficulties with speech or gait. All 11 patients eventually developed extrapyramidal signs as well as cortical features, most commonly apraxia. At autopsy, the brains of seven of the 11 patients exhibited predominant neuronal loss and gliosi

Peripheral neuropathies affect children more often than the young and middle age adults, but less frequently than the elderly. They differ from those in the adults because of the high incidence of hereditary neuropathies, including those associated with metabolic and degenerative disorders of the central nervous system; the low incidence of toxic neuropathies and those associated with systemic disorders; and a lower incidence of chronic acquire polineuropathies. Nerve biopsies are indicated if the diagnosis has not been made with clinical and electrophysiologic studies and other methods, and s
