Mechanisms of Phyllosphere Microbial Regulation of Nitrogen Use in Rice.

Nitrogen (N) fertilizers are key drivers of high yields in rice (Oryza sativa L.), yet increasing N inputs often deliver diminishing improvements in N use efficiency (NUE) and can exacerbate N losses via volatilization, leaching, and runoffs, with associated environmental impacts. The rice phyllosphere microbiome, which consists of microbes inhabiting leaf surfaces and internal tissues, has the potential to influence foliar nutrient turnover, N metabolism, and stress responses and may therefore influence internal NUE (IEN) and, under reduced fertilizer-N input, potentially affect agronomic eff…

Impaired nitrogenous waste clearance promotes hepatocellular carcinoma.

In mammals, hepatic urea cycle enzymes (UCEs) convert ammonia, the toxic nitrogenous waste, into urea for excretion. In hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), UCE expression is often heterogeneously repressed, but its role in tumorigenesis is unclear. We show that, as in patients, UCE expression is markedly reduced in multiple HCC mouse models, including those driven by oncogenic c-MET/β-catenin, leading to impaired ammonia clearance, altered amino acid metabolism, and increased pyrimidine synthesis. In contrast, UCE expression is largely preserved in c-MET/sgAxin1 tumors, allowing assessment of the …

A practical and safer model of nitrogen mustard injury in cornea.

PURPOSE: Sulfur mustard (SM) is an alkylating agent used in warfare and terrorism that inflicts devastating ocular injuries. Although the clinical symptoms are well described, the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood, hindering the development of effective treatments. One major roadblock is the lack of a suitable model due to the extremely hazardous nature of SM, which requires strict safety measures. As a safer and practical alternative, we report a novel model that uses mechlorethamine (nitrogen mustard) gel, an FDA-approved topical chemotherapeutic administered by patients at home…

Modeling of collision-induced excitation and quenching of atomic nitrogen.

Excited atomic nitrogen atoms play an important role in plasma formation in hypersonic shock-waves, as happens during spacecraft reentry and other high velocity vehicle applications. In this study, we have thoroughly studied collision induced excitation associated with two colliding nitrogen atoms in the N(4S), N(2D), and N(2P) states at collision energies up to 6 eV, using time-independent scattering calculations to determine cross sections and temperature-dependent rate coefficients. The calculations are based on potential curves and couplings determined in earlier multireference configurati…

Effects of Reactive Oxygen and Nitrogen Species on Male Fertility.

Significance: In recent decades, male fertility has been severely reduced worldwide. The causes underlying this decline are multifactorial, and include, among others, genetic alterations, changes in the microbiome, and the impact of environmental pollutants. Such factors can dysregulate the physiological levels of reactive species of oxygen (ROS) and nitrogen (RNS) in the patient, generating oxidative and nitrosative stress that impairs fertility. Recent Advances: Recent studies have delved into other factors involved in the dysregulation of ROS and RNS levels, such as diet, obesity, persisten…

Nitrogen compounds at Mexican and USA coasts on the Gulf of Mexico.

In recent decades, anthropogenic emissions in the Gulf of Mexico have caused a deterioration in air quality in surrounding areas, mainly due to particulate matter, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. Over this period, interest in reactive nitrogen compounds has increased due to their relationships to air quality and ecosystem impacts associated with atmospheric deposition. In this study we summarize air concentrations of nitrogen dioxide in ambient air and wet atmospheric deposition of nitrate and ammonium along the southern coast of the United States of America and eastern Mexico over the pe…

Synthesis and Applications of Nitrogen-Containing Heterocycles as Antiviral Agents.

Viruses have been a long-term source of infectious diseases that can lead to large-scale infections and massive deaths. Especially with the recent highly contagious coronavirus (COVID-19), antiviral drugs were developed nonstop to deal with the emergence of new viruses and subject to drug resistance. Nitrogen-containing heterocycles have compatible structures and properties with exceptional biological activity for the drug design of antiviral agents. They provided a broad spectrum of interference against viral infection at various stages, from blocking early viral entry to disrupting the viral…

Reactive nitrogen compounds and their influence on human health: an overview.

Nitrogen (N) is a critical component of food security, economy and planetary health. Human production of reactive nitrogen (Nr) via Haber-Bosch process and cultivation-induced biological N2 fixation (BNF) has doubled global N cycling over the last century. The most important beneficial effect of Nr is augmenting global food supplies due to increased crop yields. However, increased circulation of Nr in the environment is responsible for serious human health effects such as methemoglobinemia ("blue baby syndrome") and eutrophication of coastal and inland waters. Furthermore, ammonia (NH3) emissi…

A review on pyrolysis of protein-rich biomass: Nitrogen transformation.

Pyrolysis of protein-rich biomass, such as microalgae, macroalgae, sewage sludge, energy crops, and some lignocellulosic biomass, produces bio-oil with high nitrogen (N) content, sometimes as high as 10 wt% or even higher. Major nitrogenous compounds in bio-oil include amines/amides, N-containing heterocycles, and nitriles. Such bio-oil cannot be used as fuel directly since the high N content will induce massive emission of nitrogen oxides during combustion. The present review comprehensively summarized the effects of biomass compositions (i.e., elemental, biochemical, and mineral compositions…

The impact of nitrogen oxides on electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction.

The electroreduction of carbon dioxide offers a promising avenue to produce valuable fuels and chemicals using greenhouse gas carbon dioxide as the carbon feedstock. Because industrial carbon dioxide point sources often contain numerous contaminants, such as nitrogen oxides, understanding the potential impact of contaminants on carbon dioxide electrolysis is crucial for practical applications. Herein, we investigate the impact of various nitrogen oxides, including nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and nitrous oxide, on carbon dioxide electroreduction on three model electrocatalysts (i.e., copper…

ATRAID regulates the action of nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates on bone.

Nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates (N-BPs), such as alendronate, are the most widely prescribed medications for diseases involving bone, with nearly 200 million prescriptions written annually. Recently, widespread use of N-BPs has been challenged due to the risk of rare but traumatic side effects such as atypical femoral fracture (AFF) and osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). N-BPs bind to and inhibit farnesyl diphosphate synthase, resulting in defects in protein prenylation. Yet, it remains poorly understood what other cellular factors might allow N-BPs to exert their pharmacological effects. Her…

Nitrate and Nitrogen Oxides: Sources, Health Effects and Their Remediation.

Increased use of nitrogenous (N) fertilizers in agriculture has significantly altered the global N-cycle because they release nitrogenous gases of environmental concerns. The emission of nitrous oxide (N2O) contributes to the global greenhouse gas accumulation and the stratospheric ozone depletion. In addition, it causes nitrate leaching problem deteriorating ground water quality. The nitrate toxicity has been reported in a number of studies showing the health hazards like methemoglobinemia in infants and is a potent cause of cancer. Despite these evident negative environmental as well as heal…

The Role of Nitroglycerin and Other Nitrogen Oxides in Cardiovascular Therapeutics.

The use of nitroglycerin in the treatment of angina pectoris began not long after its original synthesis in 1847. Since then, the discovery of nitric oxide as a biological effector and better understanding of its roles in vasodilation, cell permeability, platelet function, inflammation, and other vascular processes have advanced our knowledge of the hemodynamic (mostly mediated through vasodilation of capacitance and conductance arteries) and nonhemodynamic effects of organic nitrate therapy, via both nitric oxide-dependent and -independent mechanisms. Nitrates are rapidly absorbed from mucous

Rapid cycling of reactive nitrogen in the marine boundary layer.

Nitrogen oxides are essential for the formation of secondary atmospheric aerosols and of atmospheric oxidants such as ozone and the hydroxyl radical, which controls the self-cleansing capacity of the atmosphere. Nitric acid, a major oxidation product of nitrogen oxides, has traditionally been considered to be a permanent sink of nitrogen oxides. However, model studies predict higher ratios of nitric acid to nitrogen oxides in the troposphere than are observed. A 'renoxification' process that recycles nitric acid into nitrogen oxides has been proposed to reconcile observations with model studie…
