Nitric Oxide, Nitric Oxide Formers and Their Physiological Impacts in Bacteria.

Nitric oxide (NO) is an active and critical nitrogen oxide in the microbe-driven nitrogen biogeochemical cycle, and is of great interest to medicine and the biological sciences. As a gas molecule prior to oxygen, NO respiration represents an early form of energy generation via various reactions in prokaryotes. Major enzymes for endogenous NO formation known to date include two types of nitrite reductases in denitrification, hydroxylamine oxidoreductase in ammonia oxidation, and NO synthases (NOSs). While the former two play critical roles in shaping electron transport pathways in bacteria, NOS

Global Harmonization of Life Cycle Assessments for Small- and Medium-Scale Wastewater Treatment.

Wastewater management (WWM) is vital for protecting human health and the environment, yet conventional centralized systems are resource-intensive and unsuited to growing urban pressure. Small and medium WWMs offer a potentially more sustainable alternative, but the lack of standardized life cycle assessment (LCA) approaches limits robust comparison and informed decision-making. In this study, we conduct a global harmonization of life cycle assessments of small- and medium-scale systems across 96 LCAs and 9 treatment technologies. By harmonizing life cycle inventories, we eliminate variability

Dynamic inner-outer dual-cycles drive selective periodate activation for nearly exclusive singlet oxygen production toward sustainable water purification.

Selective singlet oxygen (1O2) generation via periodate (PI) activation is constrained by radical-mediated competition and insufficient endogenous electron supply at metal centers. Herein, we report a spatially partitioned inner-outer dual-cycle catalytic system, consisting of nitrogen-doped carbon-confined zero-valent cobalt core encapsulated by a MnO2 shell (Co/NC/MnO2), which achieves 95.93% 1O2 selectivity. The MnO2 shell orchestrates electron redistribution to drive heterolytic I-O cleavage and OO release, effectively suppressing radical pathways without undergoing significant valency cha

Nonhepatic Hyperammonemia With Septic Shock: Case and Review of Literature.

Elevated ammonia levels lead to cerebral edema, encephalopathy, seizures, coma, and death. Hyperammonemia is primarily associated with liver disease; however, there are rare cases without liver disease. Noncirrhotic hyperammonemia is primarily due to increased production and/or decreased elimination of ammonia. We present a rare case of a 35-year-old female with severe acute noncirrhotic hyperammonemia associated with gram-negative septic shock and a suspected undiagnosed partial urea cycle enzyme deficiency. She had elevated blood and urine amino acid levels speculated to be due to an underly

Binding SnO2 nanocrystals in nitrogen-doped graphene sheets as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Hybrid anode materials for Li-ion batteries are fabricated by binding SnO2 nanocrystals (NCs) in nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-RGO) sheets by means of an in situ hydrazine monohydrate vapor reduction method. The SnO2NCs in the obtained SnO2NC@N-RGO hybrid material exhibit exceptionally high specific capacity and high rate capability. Bonds formed between graphene and SnO2 nanocrystals limit the aggregation of in situ formed Sn nanoparticles, leading to a stable hybrid anode material with long cycle life.

Two decades of the EU Water Framework Directive: Evidence of success and failure from a lowland arable catchment (River Wensum, UK).

The EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) is widely regarded as a seminal piece of environmental legislation. However, two decades since its inception, many European waterbodies are failing to meet its ambitious goal to ensure 'good' quantitative and qualitative status. Here, we investigate the impact of the WFD upon the environmentally sensitive yet heavily impacted River Wensum, a lowland arable catchment in eastern England. Compiling a dataset of 10,950 water quality samples collected from 57 sites across the catchment at approximately monthly intervals during 2000-2022, we assess the spatio-t

Popcorn-Derived Porous Carbon for Energy Storage and CO2 Capture.

Porous carbon materials have drawn tremendous attention due to its applications in energy storage, gas/water purification, catalyst support, and other important fields. However, producing high-performance carbons via a facile and efficient route is still a big challenge. Here we report the synthesis of microporous carbon materials by employing a steam-explosion method with subsequent potassium activation and carbonization of the obtained popcorn. The obtained carbon features a large specific surface area, high porosity, and doped nitrogen atoms. Using as an electrode material in supercapacitor

Physiological and gene expression responses to nitrogen regimes and temperatures in Mastigocladus sp. strain CHP1, a predominant thermotolerant cyanobacterium of hot springs.

Cyanobacteria are widely distributed primary producers with significant implications for the global biogeochemical cycles of carbon and nitrogen. Diazotrophic cyanobacteria of subsection V (Order Stigonematales) are particularly ubiquitous in photoautotrophic microbial mats of hot springs. The Stigonematal cyanobacterium strain CHP1 isolated from the Porcelana hot spring (Chile) was one of the major contributors of the new nitrogen through nitrogen fixation. Further morphological and genetic characterization verified that the strain CHP1 belongs to Stigonematales, and it formed a separate clad

Associations between Ambient Air Pollution Exposure and Menstrual Cycle Irregularity in Premenopausal Women.

PURPOSE: This study investigates the associations between various air pollutants and menstrual cycle irregularity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data for premenopausal women were obtained from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (n=4478). We evaluated the associations of moving averages of five air pollutants over 90, 120, 150, 180, and 365 days with short-interval (menstruation occurring at least once every 3 months) and long-interval (menstruation skipped for ≥ 3 months) menstrual cycle irregularity using multinomial logistic regression models. The joint effects of air pollu

Toward Low-Emission Agriculture: Synergistic Contribution of Inorganic Nitrogen and Organic Fertilizers to GHG Emissions and Strategies for Mitigation.

Nitrogen (N) and organic-source fertilizers in agriculture are important to sustain crop production for feeding the growing global population. However, their use can result in significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O), which are important climate drivers. This review discusses the interactive effects, uncovering both additive and suppressive outcomes of emissions under various soil and climatic conditions. In addition to examining the effects of nitrogen and the nitrogen use efficiency (NUE), it is crucial to comprehen

Prescribed biomass burning effects on soil NO emissions in South Carolina.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2) are key atmospheric trace gases that affect air quality, oxidation chemistry, and nitrogen deposition. Although anthropogenic NOx emissions have declined due to regulations, natural sources like soil emissions are becoming relatively more important. Biomass burning can alter soil nitrogen cycling and potentially influence soil NO fluxes, yet few controlled studies exist. Here, we examined how prescribed burning affects soil NO emissions in a South Carolina forest using incubation experiments. The study site is a sandhill ecosystem dominated by upland oak and lo

Nanoarchitectonics with Compression-Confinement activation of bamboo carbon for High-Rate aqueous supercapacitors.

Valorizing bamboo-derived carbon into high-value porous electrodes remains challenging for high-rate aqueous supercapacitors, because conventional activation tends to widen pores and strip heteroatoms, whereas densification often sacrifices ion accessibility. Here we introduce a nanoarchitectonics compression-confinement activation concept that addresses this tension by regulating mass-transport and reaction kinetics through mechanical processing, without changing the activator chemistry. Compacting a bamboo carbon/melamine/potassium acetate precursor prior to pyrolysis creates a diffusion-lim

Experimental and simulation-based reactor-scale strategies for engineering high mixotrophic synthesis, carbon sequestration and inter-trophic synergy in algal photobioreactors.

This experimental and simulation study employs radial sparging - along with other reactor-scale parameters, such as illumination intensity and carbon (CO2 and acetate) and nitrogen loading - to enhance carbon sequestration and inter-trophic synergy in mixotrophic cultivation of Chlorella sorokiniana in bubble-column photobioreactors. Radial mixing produces (3-5 times) higher flashlight frequencies, which enhance the synergy between phototrophy and heterotrophy and increase CO2 sequestration by 23-72 % at 0.04-6 % CO2 loading and 10,500-14,000 lx light. Lipid amounts obtained at 10,500, 12,000

Carbon catalysts for CO2 conversion: From carbon emissions to zero-carbon solutions.

For millions of years, Earth's carbon cycle remained stable, but anthropogenic emissions drive severe air pollution and climate change. Addressing this crisis necessitates innovative decarbonization strategies, where carbon catalysts emerge as an innovative solution, replacing critical minerals for zero-carbon emissions. These catalysts can be synthesized from carbon dioxide and used to convert feedstocks into valuable chemicals and fuels, reducing energy demands and emissions while promoting clean energy and green chemical production. In this review, we explore the catalytic mechanisms at the

Deciphering functional adaptability of microalgal-bacterial granular sludge under salicylic acid stress.

In this study, the impact of salicylic acid (SA), a prevalent non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug metabolite, on microalgal-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS) systems was systematically investigated. Results demonstrated that the MBGS system exhibited high pollutant removal efficiency in both synthetic and real wastewater containing 1 mg/L SA, achieving 81.6 % organics, 72.3 % nitrogen, and 77.1 % phosphorus removal. This performance was attributed to increased extracellular polymeric substance secretion and the proliferation of stress-tolerant Proteobacteria, Cyanobacteria and Bacteroidota, wh

NO-synthase independent NO generation in mammals.

Inorganic nitrate (NO3(-)) and nitrite (NO2(-)) are part of the nitrogen cycle in nature. To the general public these anions are generally known as undesired residues in the food chain with potentially carcinogenic effects. Among biologists, these inorganic anions have merely been viewed as inert oxidative end products of endogenous nitric oxide (NO) metabolism. However, recent studies surprisingly show that nitrate and nitrite can be metabolized in vivo to form nitric oxide (NO) and other bioactive nitrogen oxides. This represents an important alternative source of NO especially during hypoxi…

Alanine decreases the protein requirements of infants with inborn errors of amino acid metabolism.

Supplementation with alanine was found to increase growth in weight and nitrogen balance in 5 infants with a variety of inborn errors of amino acid metabolism receiving diets restricted in protein. The addition of alanine to the regimen led to a mean increase in weight of 15 g/day. This and the increased nitrogen balance of 15 mg/kg/day were highly significant statistically. In addition a dose-response effect of alanine was observed. The effect of alanine was compared with that of a supplemental mixture of essential and non-essential amino acids, lacking only those considered to be toxic in th
