Catheter tip dislocation is the main complication of permanent pacemaker implantation using the subclavian vein. In this study of 50 patients we compared the incidence of complications using two endocardial electrodes specially designed to prevent tip dislocation. One catheter had a helical endocardial electrode and the other had retractable nylon barbs. The helical electrode was superior in every respect and we recommend its use for pacing through the subclavian vein.

Electromyographic studies in young adults with rectal prolapse have shown that there are a group of persons who cannot pull their prolapses in who have got very abnormal electromyograms. Promethazine hydrochloride (PMZ), a potent H1-histamine blocker widely used to prevent motion sickness, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting, has a bitter taste. In the present study, taste masked PMZ nanocapsules (NCs) were prepared using an interfacial polycondensation technique. Abnormally expanded CAG/CTG repeat DNA sequences lead to a variety of neurological diseases, such as Huntington's disease. Here, we synthesized a cyclic pyrrole-imidazole polyamide (cPIP), which can bind to the minor groove of the CAG/CTG DNA sequence. The double-stranded DNA melting temperature (Tm ) and surface plasmon resonance assays revealed the high binding affinity of the cPIP. In addition, next-generation sequencing showed that the cPIP had high specificity for its target DNA sequence.

We report two cases of acute appendicitis in right incarcerated inguinal hernia (Amyand's hernia). One patient had gangrenous appendicitis that affected the adjoining caecum. A limited right hemicolectomy was done by extending the groin incision laterally and proximally. The second patient had simple appendicectomy. Posterior wall was repaired using nylon darn in both cases. Acute appendicitis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of obstructed right inguinal hernia.

A variety of techniques have been devised to reduce postoperative hypotony following a single-stage Molteno implant procedure. Although they effectively reduce hypotony, these techniques may result in a prolonged increase of intraocular pressure (IOP). I present a technique, consisting of placement of a 5-0 nylon internal occlusion suture combined with an external polyglactin (Vicryl) ligature around the Molteno tube, to prevent both hypotony and elevated IOP after implantation.

A simple procedure was developed for spotting blood samples directly onto nylon membrane filter, without the necessity to treat samples with pronase or proteinase K, followed by hybridizing with 32P-labelled DNA probe, pUNK1-45. This probe detected specifically P. falciparum DNA and did not cross react with DNA from man, P. knowlesi, P. chabaudi or P. cynomolgi. The probe was sensitive to detect a parasitemia of 0.001% in 20 microliters of blood.

Eleven patients developed a delayed reaction to the Dacron buttress used in Stamey urethropexy. The reaction was characterized by pain, dyspareunia, vaginal discharge and/or bleeding, induration of the abdominal incision, vaginal granulation tissue and draining abdominal or vaginal sinus tracts. The identification of specific cDNAs by screening filters impregnated with DNA from phage or bacterial colonies is a time-consuming and expensive undertaking. We have developed a rapid and inexpensive method for identifying specific cDNAs that involves hybridization of cDNAs to specific oligonucleotides bound to nylon filters. Using this method, we have identified specific cDNAs for a human B-cell growth factor from different cDNA libraries. The total processing time was 3 days, and 30% of the cDNAs selected by this method were correct.
