[Taking Care of Asylum Seekers: Occupational Health Aspects with a Special Focus on Vaccination].

Employees and volunteers often feel insecure about the potential transmission of infectious diseases when taking care of asylum seekers. It could be shown that overall only a minor risk of infection emanates from asylum seekers. However, aspects of occupational health and vaccination should be kept in mind.Besides the standard vaccination the Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO) recommends for occupational indication, which is given for employees and volunteers in asylum facilities, vaccination against hepatitis A, hepatitis B, polio (if the last vaccination was more than 10 years before)…

Radiation Dose Reconstruction Program of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health: overview.

Over the past 65 years, hundreds of thousands of workers have been engaged in nuclear weapons-related activities for the U.S. Department of Energy or its predecessor agencies. To date, almost 27,000 such employees (or their survivors) have filed claims under Part B of the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act of 2000, which provides monetary compensation and medical benefits to energy employees who have developed certain types of cancer that have been determined, under the guidelines of the program, to have resulted from occupational radiation exposure covered under th

[Analysis of health state in individuals exposed to thorium and chemical hazards in occupational environment].

Clinical and epidemiologic study of chronic somatic discases in workers engaged into thorium production (main group) in short-term period revealed significantly higher prevalence of vegetative neurosis, asthenic state, chronic gastritis, arterial hypotension, chronic nasopharyngitis and higher risk of those conditions, if compared to reference group over the period since 1947 to 1959. These findings are caused by combined exposure to occupational hazards: outer and inner radiation due to long-lived thorium, thoron and their radioactive products, associated exposure to toxic chemicals. Chronic

Ergonomic study on the manual component insertion lines for occupational health and safety improvements.

The study aimed at reducing the occupational health and safety problems faced by the manual component insertion operators. Subjective and objective assessments, and direct observations were made in the printed circuit assembly factory. Simple and low-cost ergonomic interventions were implemented, that is, repairing chairs, reducing high workloads, assigning operators to a maximum of 2 workstations, confining machines that emitted bad smell and much noise, and providing finger work aids. The results of the interventions were reductions in operators' work discomforts, that is, chair discomfort (…

Occupation risk of needlestick injuries among health care personnel in Saudi Arabia.

In a four-year study of penetrating injuries potentially contaminated with blood among health care personnel, the majority of cases occurred amongst nurses (65%). The wards were the commonest place for injury to occur (39%) which questions whether difficult practical procedures should be performed there. Injuries occurred most commonly during the afternoons (63%). Although needles were the most frequent implement (79%) causing injury, very few cases (7%) were related to the re-sheathing of cannulae. The commonest injured area (46%) was the palmar surface of the distal forefinger of the non-dom

Occupational health and safety policies in Brazil and France: contradictions analysis for the development of prevention.

Despite advances in occupational health and safety (OHS) policies around the world, the problem of occupational accidents and diseases intensifies in various economic sectors, with cuts based on gender, race, income, and occupation. This paper aims to answer two research questions: What are the main contradictions for the development and implementation of OHS policies? What are the implications of overcoming these contradictions in an attempt to improve OHS policies? Based on two previous scoping reviews developed to identify historical contradictions for Brazil and France, we performed a qual…

The role of deer keds (Diptera: Hippoboscidae: Lipoptena and Neolipoptena) in occupational and public health.

Deer keds (Diptera: Hippoboscidae: Lipoptena and Neolipoptena) are bloodsucking arthropods that primarily feed on deer (family Cervidae) but can occasionally bite humans. The knowledge of their potential harm to wildlife, livestock, and pets is fragmentary. These ectoparasites have been historically understudied, as they were only considered nuisances to various occupational groups and the public. However, there is also mounting evidence that they may be pathogen vectors as several infectious disease agents, including Acinetobacter, Anaplasma, Bartonella, Borrelia, Coxiella, Francisella, Mycop
