Filamentary keratitis.

We treated 19 eyes of 16 patients who had filamentary keratitis associated with various diseases of the cornea with 5% sodium chloride eyedrops, administered three to four times daily. Filaments associated with acute or traumatic diseases of the cornea responded in all nine cases, with rapid resolution of symptoms and signs (usually within one week). Filaments associated with keratoconjunctivitis sicca responded more slowly (average response time, four weeks); in one of nine cases (11%), the treatment failed. One case of essential filamentary keratitis responded within four weeks. The overall

Optimizing instilled drug delivery: a scoping review of microdrops in ophthalmology.

Eyedrop instillation constitutes the most commonly used ocular drug delivery method that serves for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Ocular disposition and bioavailability of instilled drugs depend on the anatomy and physiology of the ocular surface as well as the physicochemical properties of the active agent. Intraocular bioavailability is positively associated with the amount of drug available onto the ocular surface and the precorneal residence time. Concerns are raised regarding systemic absorption of the instilled drugs intraocularly, percutaneously, via the conjunctiva, through

Elucidating acceptance and clinical indications to support the rational design of drug-eluting contact lenses.

The advent of drug-eluting contact lenses (DECLs) has opened up new avenues for the treatment of eye diseases. DECLs is expected to partially overcome the shortcomings of eye drops due to single-dose packaging, accurate dosing, prolonged drug elution behavior, and simplified dosing procedures. Currently, a significant proportion of the DECLs design effort has been directed towards enhancing the compatibility of contact lenses with drugs. The appropriate elution time for the drug remains unclear. Additionally, it is ambiguous for which ophthalmic diseases DECLs offers the greatest therapeutic a

Ex vivo evaluation of the influence of pH on the ophthalmic safety, antibacterial efficacy and storage stability of povidone-iodine.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The monitoring and controlling of pH is important when preparing solutions for ophthalmic administration. In the case of povidone-iodine, dilution in an appropriate buffer is needed to improve its ophthalmic safety. BACKGROUND: Povidone-iodine is a broad-spectrum antiseptic agent that is commonly used in ophthalmic applications due to its cost-effectiveness and accessibility. However, native povidone-iodine has a pH of about 4.0 and is known to irritate the ocular surface. This study assessed whether adjusting povidone-iodine formulation pH would influence its ex vivo opht

Microplastic contamination associated with contact lenses and related ophthalmic materials under real-world conditions.

PURPOSE: Commercial ophthalmic products including contact lenses are a source of microplastic pollution with increasing scientific interest due to prolonged and repeated contact with the ocular surface. But the polymer-based materials of associated containers for storing and cleaning of contact lenses may represent an underestimated source of microplastic exposure. This preliminary study investigated microparticle presence and composition, with particular focus on microplastics. METHODS: Samples of new and long-term used contact lenses, packaging materials, storage containers, and cleaning an

Safety of moxifloxacin as shown in animal and in vitro studies.

Topical treatment of ocular bacterial infection is practiced widely, and the choice of the antibacterial agent depends on the nature of the infection, including the susceptibility of the organism, the tissue affected, and the safety profile of the agent. Moxifloxacin is a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone approved for ophthalmic use as moxifloxacin ophthalmic solution 0.5% (VIGAMOX, Alcon, Fort Worth, TX). Moxifloxacin ophthalmic solution 0.5% is self-preserved at a near-neutral pH of 6.8. In treating ocular infection, the three important aspects of therapeutic control are potency, penetration

Design and Development of Ophthalmic Liposomes from the QbD Perspective.

Due to significant lachrymation, drug washing out, and poor adhesion to the lipophilic outer layer of the precorneal and cornea membrane, topical ophthalmic solution drops have poor ocular bioavailability. The rate of transcorneal absorption is impacted in the case of hydrophilic drug molecules as brimonidine tartrate, timolol maleate, cyclosporine, etc. Ophthalmic solution administered in many doses is less patient-compliant. The limitation of multiple-dose and its negative effects can be overcome by the development of delayed- release liposomes. Liposomes are regulatory-approved novel drug d
