INTRODUCTION: Eye infection is a common cause of ophthalmologic consultation. Adenovirus keratoconjunctivitis outbreaks are common worldwide but its impact and clinical characteristic in Chilean population is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To describe a series of adenovirus keratoconjunctivitis cases.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: The Index case and contacts received medical care in the Hospital Clínico Universidad de Chile between April and August 2006. A complete ophthalmologic exam and microbiologic evaluation was performed.

PURPOSE: To estimate the prevalence of punctal stenosis among patients visiting the general ophthalmology clinic for routine checkup.
DESIGN: Prospective, observational case series.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 682 patients were evaluated for evidence of punctal stenosis from May to November 2008. Any associated findings from clinical examination were recorded.

The paper underlines the importance of the imagistic examination in the diagnosis and the therapeutical orientation in an orbital injury in a four year old child. The orbital injury ends with a foreign body (fragment of a pencil) in the orbit. The situation and the orientation of the foreign body was reveled by the computer tomography and the MIMICS program. Afterwards, the MRI exam ruled out a muscular injury and permitted a correct strabological diagnose and a correct strabismus surgery.

Given the increase in bacterial resistance, antibiotics use has been carefully studied during the last decade. In France, topical antibiotics have therefore been restricted to medical prescription, and specific guidelines were published by the French Agency for the Safety of Healthcare Products (AFSSAPS) in 2004. This article reviews the literature on emerging bacterial resistance in ophthalmology, and summarizes the AFSSAPS guidelines.

This review presents highlights and updates from of the most significant clinical trials in neuro-ophthalmology to date, the Optic Neuritis Treatment Trial, the Controlled High-Risk Avonex Multiple Sclerosis Prevention Study, and the Ischemic Optic Neuropathy Decompression Trial. The quality of evidence for treatment efficacy from these trials and other recent investigations of giant cell arteritis and idiopathic intracranial hypertension is classified herein according to published criteria based on sample size and study design.

The purpose of the Committee on Ophthalmic Procedures Assessment is to evaluate on a scientific basis new and existing ophthalmic tests, devices, and procedures for their safety, efficacy, clinical effectiveness, and appropriate uses. Evaluations include examination of available literature, epidemiological analyses when appropriate, and compilation of opinions from recognized experts and other interested parties. After appropriate review by all contributors, including legal counsel, assessments are submitted to the Academy's Board of Trustees for consideration as official Academy policy.

An overview how to examine pupillary function and handle pupillary abnormalities is presented. The following issues are discussed: swinging flashlight test, clinical relevance of a relative afferent pupillary defect, anisocoria with normal light reaction, diagnosis and evaluation of Homer's syndrome, differential diagnosis of impaired light reaction, tonic pupil, third nerve palsy, supranuclear pupillary disorders, iris problems, systemic disease, measurement of sleepiness, and pupillography.

Skull radiographs and special views are still requested in ophthalmology despite the increasing availability of other radiological investigations such as CT, MR imaging and ultrasound. In order to assess the value of skull radiography in ophthalmology we retrospectively studied the use of skull radiographs and CT images in our department.
