The optically evoked blink reflex (BR) was recorded in 30 patients (20 females, 10 males) with primary acute optic neuritis (ON) unassociated with other CNS disorders. The reflex was studied in the acute stage between the 1st and 6th day after onset, during the 1st month following the acute stage once a week, and then 2 and 6 months later. A temporary lowering of body temperature by means of cold drinks, tried on a group of 18 patients with acute optic neuritis, led in 14 cases to a significant improvement in the 30 degree visual field, which the authors tested with the Octopus 201 automatic perimeter. Treatment of optic neuritis with megadose corticosteroids.

Difficulty in distinguishing between monosymptomatic optic neuritis due to autoimmune disease or to intrinsic demyelination in young adults prompted a trial administration of megadose corticosteroids in a series of patients. Treatment with 1 g daily of intravenous methylprednisolone (Solu-Medrol) for 2 to 5 days led to the rapid resolution and restoration of visual function in five patients. Electrophysiological and immunological studies in optic neuritis.

Serial clinical and electrophysiological examinations and immunological investigations have been performed on 34 patients with primary optic neuritis. In 8 patients, the latency of visual evoked responses was normal after the resolution of clinical symptoms, and in a further 5 patients improvement in VER latency occurred although the response remained abnormal. Available estimates of the frequency with which a patient with optic neuritis develops multiple sclerosis range from as low as 13% to as high as 87%. In an effort to obtain a better estimate, a nation-wide study of optic neuritis was carried out in Israel. The study was a re-examination of 176 patients with optic neuritis. The follow-up period was for 38 patients, 6-12 months, for 52 patients, 1-5 years and for 86 patients, 6-24 years from the initial attack of optic neuritis. In 66% of the involved eyes visual acuity had again become good or excellent, but in 25% it was poor.
