Dynamical changes of phospholipid membranes caused by polymorphic amyloid fibrils studied by quasi-elastic neutron scattering.

Deposition of protein aggregates called amyloid fibrils in various organs is the hallmark of amyloidosis such as Alzheimer's disease. Due to the polymorphism of amyloid fibrils, some types of fibrils are more cytotoxic than others, which seems to be correlated with the onset and the severity of amyloidosis. However, the molecular mechanism of cytotoxicity is not well understood, where interactions between amyloid fibrils and bio-membranes play a crucial role. Here, by employing quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) in combination with the state-of-the-art analytical model of phospholipid dyn

Decomposing effects of time on task reveals an anteroposterior gradient of perceptual decision regions.

In perceptual decision making, the selection of an appropriate action depends critically on an organism's ability to use sensory inputs to accumulate evidence for a decision. However, differentiating decision-related processes from effects of "time on task" can be difficult. Here we combine the response signal paradigm, in which the experimenter rather than the subject dictates the time of the response, and independent components analysis (ICA) to search for signatures consistent with time on task and decision making, respectively, throughout the brain. Using this novel approach, we identify t

Responses of neurons in the caudal medullary lateral tegmental field to visceral inputs and vestibular stimulation in vertical planes.

The dorsolateral reticular formation of the caudal medulla, or the lateral tegmental field (LTF), has been classified as the brain's "vomiting center", as well as an important region in regulating sympathetic outflow. We examined the responses of LTF neurons in cats to rotations of the body that activate vestibular receptors, as well as to stimulation of baroreceptors (through mechanical stretch of the carotid sinus) and gastrointestinal receptors (through the intragastric administration of the emetic compound copper sulfate). Approximately half of the LTF neurons exhibited graviceptive respon

Epididymal sperm motion as a parameter of male reproductive toxicity: sperm motion, fertility, and histopathology in ethinylestradiol-treated rats.

The present study was designed to characterize the effect of ethinylestradiol (EE) on epididymal sperm motion using a computer-assisted sperm analysis system (CASA), and to elucidate the correlation between sperm motion endpoints and other measures including fertility, histopathologic, and endocrinologic endpoints. EE was orally given to adult male rats at a daily dosage of 10 mg/kg for 3 and 5 d, and at daily dosages of I and 10 mg/kg for 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks. Changes in sperm motion were first detected after one week of treatment. Of nine sperm motion parameters, the percentage of motile spe

[Hypnosis in general medicine].

Organic pathologies with psychoaffective aetiology are numerous, and in all diseases, mental and rational elements are concomitant with the organic situation. Aware of the psycho-dynamic mechanisms he sets in motion by his actions and appreciating those underlying the symptomatology he has to deal with, the hypnologist transcends the overspecialisation of medical science to restore the patient's psycho-physical unitary reality. This explains both the possibilities of hypnositherapy in general medicine and its impassable limits. The hypnositherapy that the general practitioner can (and most imp

Intrafractional Voxel-wise Anatomic Motion Tracking Guided by Multimodal Respiratory Surrogates in Radiotherapy: Framework Development and Multicenter Validation.

PURPOSE: Intrafractional respiratory motion management encounters trade-offs between target coverage, organ at risk (OAR) sparing, and treatment efficacy. Real-time tracking is promising but hindered by invasiveness risks, lack of global deformations, or inadaptability to irregular respiration. Currently respiratory modeling-based adaptive tracking may offer ideal solutions, but is limited by discrete clinical priors, highly-sparse observations, and complex motion variability. This study advances the constrained modeling toward a synergistic knowledge- and information-augmentation-driven parad

Phase 1 Study of Online Proton Adaptive RadioTherapY (PARTY).

PURPOSE: Proton stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) offers advantageous dosimetric properties but is highly sensitive to setup variation, anatomic change, and range uncertainty, limiting broader clinical adoption. Online adaptation of proton therapy has the potential to address these limitations. This report presents the results of a Phase Iprospective clinical trial evaluating the feasibility, safety, and dosimetric impact of online adaptive proton SBRT. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Ten patients with oligometastatic malignancies involving abdominal, pelvic, or thoracic sites were enrolled. All p

CBCT-Based Online Adaptive, Ultra-Hypofractionated Radiotherapy for Prostate Cancer: First Clinical Experiences.

Background and Objectives: Ultra-hypofractionated radiotherapy (uhRT) is increasingly used for low- and intermediate-risk localized prostate cancer, necessitating exceptional precision compared to conventional fractionation. CBCT-based online-adaptive uhRT may help mitigate pelvic organ motion but has not yet been established in clinical routine. We report initial clinical experiences focusing on the feasibility and technical aspects of treatment delivery. Materials and Methods: Seven patients (35 fractions) with low- or intermediate-risk prostate cancer were treated with online-adaptive uhRT …

Automatic assessment of laparoscopic surgical skill competence based on motion metrics.

The purpose of this study was to characterize the motion features of surgical devices associated with laparoscopic surgical competency and build an automatic skill-credential system in porcine cadaver organ simulation training. Participants performed tissue dissection around the aorta, dividing vascular pedicles after applying Hem-o-lok (tissue dissection task) and parenchymal closure of the kidney (suturing task). Movements of surgical devices were tracked by a motion capture (Mocap) system, and Mocap-metrics were compared according to the level of surgical experience (experts: ≥50 laparoscop

Microbubble elevator induced buoyancy oscillations of reacting droplets.

Autonomous droplet oscillations are intriguing and provide a strong inspiration for the development of active soft matter. However, they are often limited by their reliance on external gradients and slow transport. Here, we demonstrate a propulsion mechanism driven by confined interfacial reactions: the hydrogen microbubble elevator. We show that hydrogen evolution within a liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) droplet and the resulting bubble pinch off modulate the droplet's effective density, inducing periodic rising and sinking cycles in a stratified fluid. These droplets reach peak veloci

Proprioceptive Acuity Assessment in Multiple Directions Across Multiple Joints in the Upper Limb.

Proprioception is essential for precise movement as it helps the body transmit important data about its surroundings to the central nervous system for maintaining body posture and position. This study aimed to investigate the effect of direction and joint angle on upper limb proprioception. Thirty individuals (all males) completed a position reproduction activity in 13 directions and three joint angles. It was discovered that upper limb proprioception is dependent on joint angle, direction, and range of motion. The position reproduction error was found to be dependent on the direction, which h

The otolith vermis: A systems neuroscience theory of the Nodulus and Uvula.

The Nodulus and Uvula (NU) (lobules X and IX of the cerebellar vermis) form a prominent center of vestibular information processing. Over decades, fundamental and clinical research on the NU has uncovered many aspects of its function. Those include the resolution of a sensory ambiguity inherent to inertial sensors in the inner ear, the otolith organs; the use of gravity signals to sense head rotations; and the differential processing of self-generated and externally imposed head motion. Here, I review these works in the context of a theoretical framework of information processing called the in

Semicircular canal biomechanics in health and disease.

The semicircular canals are responsible for sensing angular head motion in three-dimensional space and for providing neural inputs to the central nervous system (CNS) essential for agile mobility, stable vision, and autonomic control of the cardiovascular and other gravity-sensitive systems. Sensation relies on fluid mechanics within the labyrinth to selectively convert angular head acceleration into sensory hair bundle displacements in each of three inner ear sensory organs. Canal afferent neurons encode the direction and time course of head movements over a broad range of movement frequencie

Retinotopic encoding of the Ternus-Pikler display reflected in the early visual areas.

The visual representation of the world is often assumed to be retinotopic, and many visual brain areas are indeed organized retinotopically. Visual perception, however, is not based on a reference frame anchored in retinotopic coordinates. For example, when an object moves, motion of its constituent parts is perceived relative to the object rather than in retinotopic coordinates. The moving object thus serves as a nonretinotopic reference system for computing the properties of its parts. It is largely unknown how the brain accomplishes this feat. Here, we used the Ternus-Pikler display to pit

Vestibular autonomic regulation (including motion sickness and the mechanism of vomiting).

Autonomic manifestations of vestibular dysfunction and motion sickness are well established in the clinical literature. Recent studies of 'vestibular autonomic regulation' have focused predominantly on autonomic responses to stimulation of the vestibular sense organs in the inner ear. These studies have shown that autonomic responses to vestibular stimulation are regionally selective and have defined a 'vestibulosympathetic reflex' in animal experiments. Outside the realm of experimental preparations, however, the importance of vestibular inputs in autonomic regulation is unclear because contr

Examiner reliability of a systematic osteopathic musculoskeletal examination model in patients with stroke: results from the SOMADC-AC study.

CONTEXT: No study has systematically measured somatic dysfunction (SD) in patients with acute cerebral ischemia or tested the reliability of a new osteopathic diagnostic construct, called the Functional Pathology of the Musculoskeletal System (FPMSS) model. The methodology assesses the musculoskeletal system (MSS) as an integrated organ system, shifting emphasis of examination away from structural/postural malalignment to whole systemic motion and allows quantification, prioritization, and profiling of disproportionate motion imbalances as compared to traditional diagnostic criteria. Compartmentalization in the pig latissimus dorsi muscle.

Portions of the latissimus dorsi (LD) muscle are frequently employed as free muscle or myocutaneous grafts. The functional consequences for both the graft and the remaining donor tissue must depend in part on the neural organization of the muscle. Previous anatomical and clinical reports have suggested that the LD is organized into independently innervated segments, but experimental documentation has been lacking. This study investigated the neural organization of the LD in pigs using (1) synchronous electromyography (EMG) of several sites within the LD and motion analysis of the shoulder and

Dosimetric Comparison of Deep Inspiration Breath-Hold and Free-Breathing Techniques in Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy for Localized Lung Tumors at a Tertiary Care Center.

Background Respiratory motion is a major source of geometric uncertainty in lung stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) and may lead to increased irradiation of normal lung tissue and adjacent organs at risk (OARs). Deep inspiration breath-hold (DIBH) is an advanced motion management technique that minimizes tumor motion by immobilizing the target during treatment delivery and increasing lung volume. This study aimed to evaluate the dosimetric advantages of DIBH compared with free breathing (FB) in SBRT for patients with localized lung tumors. Methods Twenty patients with localized lung tumors
