Redirecting mandibular growth through orthodontic dentoalveolar height development in growing patients with Class III malocclusion undergoing maxillary orthopedic protraction.

INTRODUCTION: To control mandibular growth could be the determining factor for any growing patients with Class III malocclusion undergoing maxillary orthopedics. It has been reported that orthodontic dentoalveolar height development (ODHD) through orthodontic total arch extrusion might redirect mandibular growth backward and downward in growing patients with Class III malocclusion. We hypothesized bimaxillary-ODHD (bimax-ODHD) should be equal to or exceed the mandibular condylar growth to redirect the mandible to grow downward and backward in growing patients with Class III malocclusion. Comparative evaluation of four traction scenarios on a labially impacted dilacerated maxillary central incisor: a three-dimensional finite element analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the stress distribution in the dentoalveolar structures of a labially impacted dilacerated maxillary central incisor during orthodontic traction, considering different positions of the traction button on the tooth's crown through finite element analysis (FEA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four three-dimensional (3D)finite element models (FEM) were created to simulate the maxilla of a 9-year-old female patient, featuring a left labially impacted dilacerated maxillary central incisor with the only variation being the position of the orthodontic traction button:

Adverse effects of orthodontics: a report of 2 cases.

Adverse effects are results beyond the expected good outcomes of treatment. Like any other field in dentistry and medicine, orthodontics is not immune to such effects. The probability of adverse results in orthodontics increases when important rules and facts are ignored. To illustrate this, treatment and its adverse effects in 2 patients are discussed. In 1 young adult female, a palatally impacted maxillary canine was being moved into its place in the arch when it became ankylosed. Despite the cessation of movement, the orthodontist continued to apply mechanical forces to the canine for an ad

Clinical Efficacy of Clear Aligners in Class II Malocclusion: From Pediatric to Adult Cases-A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Class II malocclusion is one of the most common and challenging orthodontic problems, often requiring complex, lengthy treatment and sometimes involving extractions or surgery. While conventional fixed appliances have been the gold standard, the increasing demand for aesthetic and comfortable treatment alternatives has made clear aligners a prevalent choice. Understanding the specific biomechanics, limitations, and successful clinical strategies for using aligners-especially in managing vertical dimension and achieving skeletal correction (mandibular advancement)-is crucial for exp

Apical root resorption in orthodontically treated adults.

This study analyzed the relationship in orthodontically treated adults between upper central incisor displacement measured on lateral cephalograms and apical root resorption measured on anterior periapical x-ray films. A multiple linear regression examined incisor displacements in four directions (retraction, advancement, intrusion, and extrusion) as independent variables, attempting to account for observed differences in the dependent variable, resorption. Mean apical resorption was 1.36 mm (sd +/- 1.46, n = 73). Mean horizontal displacement of the apex was -0.83 mm (sd +/- 1.74, n = 67); mea

Soft- and hard-tissue augmentation by orthodontic treatment in the esthetic zone.

A technique that may effectively create a greater volume of available hard and soft tissue in the vertical plane without surgical intervention is reported and explained. Limitations of the forced eruption are also discussed. Creating an esthetic implant-supported restoration is a challenge in patients who have alveolar resorption and/or attachment loss, especially when they present with a high smile line. Many methods to augment this loss of tissue have been proposed; most involve surgical procedures to add bone or bone substitutes to compensate for the loss of alveolar tissue. This case repor

A multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of a horizontally impacted mandibular second premolar: 10-year follow-up.

This report presents a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of a rare case of a distally impacted mandibular second premolar indicating a 90-degree tilt of the long axis in a healthy, 15-year-old girl. It also describes the clinical and radiologic findings after a 10-year longitudinal follow-up period. The horizontally impacted mandibular second premolar was positioned behind the roots of the first molar and in close proximity to the root of the second molar, toward the lingual cortex of the mandibular body. Treatment methods required 2 years of cooperation among an orthodontist, an ora

Cone-beam computed tomographic evaluation of changes in maxillary alveolar bone after orthodontic treatment.

This study examined the relationship of vertical and horizontal changes in the alveolar bone crest with upper incisor movement after orthodontic treatment. Tooth movement was measured on lateral cephalograms. Vertical and horizontal changes in the median alveolar crest and distance from the cementoenamel junction and anterior nasal spine to the alveolar crest were measured with cone-beam computed tomography. The incisal edge moved distally, and the cervical point intruded significantly and moved distally. The median alveolar crest decreased by 3.80 ± 2.05 mm. The distance from the labial cemen

[Upper central incisors and asymmetry: a significant orthodontic challenge].

In any assessment of the esthetic characteristics of a smile the central incisors play a decisive role. Moreover, correction of their malpositions and, especially, their asymmetry, is one of the principal reasons patients consult orthodontists. The etiology of this asymmetry may be vertical, with one incisor more erupted than its mate or horizontal, with a mid-line discrepancy, and can be objectified by a clinical examination and supplementary studies, especially radiological as a means of helping orthodontists adopt the most appropriate treatment plan. In accordance with the etiopathogenesis

Prognosis of root-fractured permanent incisors--prediction of healing modalities.

A population of 85 patients, comprising 95 root-fractured permanent incisors followed up to 11 years, was studied prospectively for the type of fracture healing that occurred (i.e. union of the fragments by interposition of hard tissue (HT) or connective tissue (CT), or nonunion characterized by interposition of granulation tissue between the fragments (GT)). Initial treatment was provided according to established treatment guidelines by the attending oral surgeon at the emergency room. Follow-up examination and treatment were provided by 2 of the authors. It appeared that GT could be diagnose

Simplifying the approach of open bite treatment with aligners and selective micro-osteoperforations: An adult case report.

INTRODUCTION: Open bite treatment represents one of the most challenging malocclusions because it has a multifactorial aetiology and in particular because its dental correction strongly depends on the possibility to manage the posterior intrusion with a reliable system controlling the vertical position of upper and lower molars. Clear Aligner system proved to be an efficient way to control the hyper divergent patients performing posterior intrusion and managing the counterclockwise rotation of the mandible. This technique has shown to be predictable for molar intrusion up to 1mm. METHODS: Thi

Assessment of the Orthodontic External Resorption in Periodontal Breakdown-A Finite Elements Analysis (Part I).

This Finite Elements Analysis (FEA) assessed the accuracy of Tresca failure criteria (maximum shear stress) for the study of external root resorption. Additionally, the tooth absorption-dissipation ability was assessed. Overall, 81 models of the second mandibular premolar, out of a total of 324 simulations, were involved. Five orthodontic movements (intrusion, extrusion, rotation, translation, and tipping) were simulated under 0.6 N and 1.2 N in a horizontal progressive periodontal breakdown simulation of 0-8 mm. In all simulations, Tresca criteria accurately displayed the localized areas of m
