Do teeth want to be straight? A nonsurgical approach to unerupted teeth.

Although some orthodontists believe that ectopic labially positioned canines may erupt without surgical exposure, many articles emphasize the surgical management of the nonpalatally impacted canine. In this article, the author discusses the treatment and results of 3 cases, with a total of 4 impacted maxillary canines. All cases were treated with a conservative approach and without surgical intervention. This nontraumatic, nonsurgical approach demonstrates the viability of conservative options for the management of unerupted teeth in carefully selected cases.

Incidental findings of skull-base abnormalities in cone-beam computed tomography scans with consultation by maxillofacial radiologists.

INTRODUCTION: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) gives orthodontists and other dental clinicians 3-dimensional information for planning treatment in the craniofacial region. Often overlooked are incidental findings outside the treatment region of interest. METHODS: Two patients with incidental findings of skull-base abnormalities are presented. The orthodontic patient was tentatively diagnosed with a notochordal remnant in the clivus; the implant patient exhibited an empty sella turcica. RESULTS: For the clivus lesion in the orthodontic patient, an artifact was ruled out after a second CBC…

Single visit rehabilitation of 12-day neonate with cleft palate using modified feeding spoon impression technique: A case report.

The rehabilitation of the cleft requires a multidisciplinary approach involving a pediatrician, surgeon, otolaryngologist, speech therapist, orthodontist, prosthodontist, and psychologist. The present case report illustrates the rehabilitation of a 12-day-old neonate with a cleft palate. Since the palatal arch of the neonate was very small, a feeding spoon was innovatively modified to obtain the impression. The obturator was fabricated on the same day and delivered in one appointment.

[Syndromes 17. Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia].

The X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is characterized by hypohidrosis, hypotrichosis and hypodontia. Sebaceous and salivary glands ar also affected. Recognition of the syndrome usually comes from affected man, although female carriers may show symptoms. Dental treatment is complicated and should be coordinated by a dentist in a centre for special dental care. Cooperation with an orthodontist and an oral and maxillofacial surgeon is advocated.

Dental, orthodontic, and oral/maxillofacial evaluation and treatment in Apert syndrome.

Although the cause of the midfacial anomalies in Apert syndrome is still elusive, a great experience has accrued in the management of these physically and psychologically handicapping deformities. An interdisciplinary approach that includes input from an orthodontist, pediatric dentist, and oral and maxillofacial surgeon should be an integral part of the management of affected patients. This theme of surgical-orthodontic-dental communication and interaction is stressed and illustrated throughout the article.

[Diagnostic and therapeutic approach to unilateral posterior vertical insufficiency].

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this article is to present the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to unilateral posterior vertical insufficiency. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The authors describe the management protocol. RESULTS: Posterior vertical insufficiency (PVI) manifests clinically as obliquity of the maxillo-mandibular occlusal plane and bicommissural line, and deviation of the chin. Radiographically, PVI is characterized by an elevation of the mandibular angle in relation to the base of the odontoid. Among the etiologies, congenital disorders are the most frequent, dominated by condyle hypoplasi

Accuracy of a surface-based fusion method when integrating digital models and the cone beam computed tomography scans with metal artifacts.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the intra- and inter-observer reliability of maxillary digital dental model integration into cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans to reconstruct three-dimensional (3D) skeletodental models for orthognathic patients. This retrospective study consisted of CBCT and digital maxillary dentition images of 20 Class III orthognathic patients. After two repeated fusions of digital cast images with reconstructed CBCT images by a digital engineer and an orthodontist respectively, the 3D coordinate values of the canines, first molars, and central incisors were e

Alveolar bone grafts: the surgical/orthodontic management of the cleft maxilla.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the management of the cleft maxilla with emphasis on the controversies concerning the decisions which a cleft palate team makes with limited evidence but strong beliefs in the anticipated outcomes. The orthodontist and the surgeon need to collaborate in determining the timing and sequencing of alveolar bone grafting. Currently the emphasis on secondary bone grafting has superseded primary bone grafting in its effectiveness and efficiency. Contemporary management of infants born with clefts of the lip and palate is to delay bone grafting until the early m

[Effectiveness of virtual reality distraction in reducing anxiety among children with neurodevelopmental disorders during orthodontic assessment: a prospective study].

INTRODUCTION: In dentistry, managing anxious children is a daily challenge. Anxiety, affecting 10-20% of children, poses a barrier to care. This issue is exacerbated by deinstitutionalization and the law for equal rights, exposing orthodontists to a new patient group combining disability-related traits and heightened anxiety. Faced with anxious children, orthodontists have various management strategies. However, conventional behavioral techniques (CBT) have shown limits in children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD), contributing to disparities in access to care. Practitioners' reluctance…

A surgeon's perspective on the uncorrected skeletal deformity. Part I: Unintended consequences on facial structures and esthetic harmony.

It is not uncommon for orthodontists to encounter patients whose malocclusion results, at least in part, from an underlying skeletal discrepancy. In many patients, these discrepancies can be fully corrected with growth modification with or without dental compensation to achieve a Class I occlusal relationship. A subset of patients with moderate skeletal deformities in whom surgery is ideally indicated but who choose to defer surgical treatment may be at risk for long-term adverse consequences on facial esthetics. As a surgeon who performs both orthognathic and facial esthetic surgery, the seni…

[Risk perception and management in orthodontic treatment].

With the improvement of people's living standards and oral health education, the demand for orthodontic treatment is increasing. The comprehensive goal of orthodontic treatment is not only to obtain esthetic dentition and appearance, but also to obtain oral health, general health and mental and psychological health. Therefore, how to effectively prevent the risks in orthodontic treatment is particularly important, and it is also an important content that orthodontists must master. In this paper, the prevention of related risks in orthodontic treatment was discussed.

Forced eruption of a palatally impacted and transposed canine with a temporary skeletal anchorage device.

Treatment of palatally impacted and transposed canines is challenging for both orthodontists and oral surgeons. To treat a maxillary canine impaction without risking damage to adjacent teeth, it is necessary to use cone-beam computed tomography for proper localization and treatment planning. In this case report, a palatally impacted canine was initially retracted distally with a microimplant inserted in the palatal slope and then was moved buccally into its ideal position. The patient's occlusion and smile esthetics were significantly improved after orthodontic treatment.
