Secondary tumors involving the temporal bone are comparatively rare. We report a case of secondary osteosarcoma presenting in the temporal bone which arose from a primary lesion in the tibia in a patient with Paget's disease. To our knowledge secondary osteosarcoma of the temporal bone has never previously been described.

High rates of bone resorption, bone formation, and marrow fibrosis are characteristic of Paget's disease of bone. This excessive bone turnover is reflected by increased fluxes of calcium ions out of and into the skeleton. The rates of these fluxes are highly geared to each other such that calcium balances are close to zero in the absence of fracture or significant immobilization. An increased turnover of bone matrix is also evident by increased urinary excretion of collagen breakdown products (oligopeptides of hydroxyproline, hydroxylysine, and hydroxylysine glycosides) as well as products (pe

Although senile dementia of Alzheimer type (SDAT) is the commonest cause of dementia in the elderly, it is important to recognise potentially reversible causes such as normal pressure hydrocephalus. This has been reported to occur in association with Paget's disease of the skull, but would appear to be an extremely rare complication of this disease. To date 4 cases of successful surgical intervention in normal pressure hydrocephalus complicating Paget's disease of skull have been reported. We report 3 cases which have presented to one Department of Geriatric Medicine during a 3-year period. Tw

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) and Paget's disease of bone occurred in a patient whose brother has Paget's disease. Several other relatives have the dominant variety of OI. The familial occurrence of the two diseases is presumably due to chance and, to our knowledge, has not been previously reported. Examination of iliac crest bone biopsy specimens showed mild changes of both diseases in the proband. Electron microscopy of the bone collagen demonstrated type I collagen fibers, which are reduced in number, decreased in diameter, and stellate rather than smooth in outline. Three populations of col

Two cases of Paget disease complicated by sarcomatous degeneration in the skull are presented. The bony disarray of underlying Paget disease of the skull may mask the cortical destruction produced by a developing sarcoma. The role of computerized tomography in the early detection of malignant change is stressed.

THC is a remodelling process affecting the bones of the neurocranium. CT analysis shows that both the inner and the outer table as well as the diploë can be involved in this process. The term typical hyperostosis cranii (THC) replaces the terms derived from conventional radiography such as nebula frontalis, hyperostosis frontalis interna, etc., as CT shows transitional stages between them. A new type of THC is described. There are morphological similarities between THC and Paget's disease in CT.

The problem of 'Gundu' in primates is discussed. Cases of so-called 'Gundu' in the literature, two cases in Gorilla and one in Lagothrix, are dealt with. Histological and X-ray techniques are used. One case (Lagothrix) represents the so-called simian bone disease, which is metabolic disorder and is due to a secondary nutritional hyperparathyroidism. The other two cases (Gorilla) show symmetrical bony tumors of the maxilla. The origin is uncertain. Gundu, Paget's disease and primary hyperparathyroidism Recklinghausen have not been observed in primates so far.

Four cases with Paget's disease of the temporal bone are presented to illustrate the pathogenesis of the associated deafness. One case illustrates the combination of severe deafness due to bilateral otosclerosis with probably asymptomatic bilateral Paget's disease. One case with advanced Paget's disease presents features to explain early stages of sensori-neural deafness before actual cellular invasion of the inner ear. One case of profound deafness due to Paget's disease presents a different stage of cellular invasion of the inner ear by the disease on each side. One case illustrates invasion

Audiometric and radiological assessments of 5 patients with deafness due to Paget's disease of the skull are presented. It was found that all patients had a mixed deafness. The conductive element was demonstrated in all ears by both negative Rinne tests and by pure-tone audiometry. A variety of radiological changes was found in the middle ear in all cases, and all ears had abnormal tympanometry. Sensorineural loss was shown to be limited to end organ disease. Four patients were then treated for 18 to 22 months with synthetic human calcitonin with an improvement in those biochemical parameters

OBJECTIVE. To report a series of patients with Paget's disease of bone that is rarely diagnosed in the Chinese, and to describe their presentations and clinical characteristics. DESIGN. A retrospective case series and literature review. SETTING. A regional public hospital in Hong Kong. PATIENTS. Patients with a diagnosis of Paget's disease of bone (or osteitis deformans) documented in the Clinical Management System of the Hospital Authority and being followed up in the medical endocrine clinic of the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital were identified in July 2011. This was performed usin…

BACKGROUND: Extramammary Paget disease is a relatively rare and less malignant intraepithelial adenocarcinoma. t is found in areas with abundant distribution of apocrine sweat glands such as the external genitalia, external genitalia, and perianal area, with fewer armpits. The disease progresses slowly and is prone to misdiagnosis in clinical practice.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed a female patient. She had a left axillary mass for more than 2 years. Recently, the mass increased and the surface skin was ulcerated. Then she went to Jiangxi Provincial Dermatology Hospital for left axilla

BACKGROUND: European and Australian studies have reported a decrease in the prevalence, incidence and clinical severity of Paget's disease of bone (PDB). There are no studies on the current clinical characteristics of PDB in Quebec, Canada.
AIMS: The purpose of this study was to describe the characteristics of unrelated patients with PDB diagnosed after the year 2000 in our region and to compare them to a historical cohort diagnosed before 2000.
METHODS: In this retrospective descriptive cohort study, socio-demographic data and clinical characteristics for the contemporary cohort were collec

In ultra-rare bone diseases, information on growth during childhood is sparse. Juvenile Paget disease (JPD) is an ultra-rare disease, characterized by loss of function of osteoprotegerin (OPG). OPG inhibits osteoclast activation via the receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB (RANK) pathway. In JPD, overactive osteoclasts result in inflammatory-like bone disease due to grossly elevated bone resorption. Knowledge on the natural history of JPD, including final height and growth, is limited. Most affected children receive long-term antiresorptive treatment, mostly with bisphosphonates, to contain
