Tinnitus Perspectives among Israeli Ear, Nose and Throat Physicians: A Nationwide Survey.

OBJECTIVES: To study the compliance of ear, nose, and throat (ENT) physicians to the American Association Otolaryngology-Head - Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) clinical practice guidelines (CPG) for tinnitus and to identify the disparity of both diagnosis and management options in the absence of a local protocol for the management of adult tinnitus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A voluntary and anonymous questionnaire was emailed in a Google spread-out sheet format to all practicing ENT physicians across the country (n=370). Overall, 126 ENT physicians responded to the questionnaire (34% of the physicians to

[The high position of the jugular bulb in children].

INTRODUCTION: Variations of the vascular structures related to the temporal bone may cause important problems in diagnosis, treatment planing and surgery. A high jugular bulb is not an uncommon anomaly. It has been reported to occur in up to 6% of temporal bones. A high jugular bulb is often discovered as an asymptomatic, incidental finding. Case reports indicate that abnormal location of the jugular bulb may be the cause of some audiological problems. Conductive hearing loss in association with this anomaly may occur, but has been reported infrequently in the literature. MATERIAL AND METHODS

Practical management of Bell's palsy.

Bell's palsy is an acute unilateral weakness or paralysis of the face resulting from peripheral facial nerve dysfunction. While there is no readily identifiable cause, there is some recovery of function within 6 months. This article offers practical guidelines for diagnosing and treating Bell's palsy. These guidelines are based on the author's experience with 63 patients over the last 8 years. Physical examination should reveal diffuse nerve involvement, normal otoscopic findings, and no skin blebs or blisters and parotid masses. Other cranial nerve palsies may be present. Diagnostic testing s

The relationship between auditory processing disorder and articulation disorders.

PURPOSE: Auditory processing disorder (APD) may attribute to certain speech problems, as auditory processing plays a vital role in phonetic development during childhood. This research investigates the incidence of APD in individuals with misarticulations of the /r/, /s/, /k/, /θ/, /dʒ/, and /q/ speech sounds. These sounds represent different places of articulation, manners of articulation, and phonation. METHOD: A total of 51 participants with articulation disorders aged 6-18 years underwent conventional peripheral assessments, including otoscopic examination, immittance measurement, and audi

From Toothpick to Intraparenychmal Otogenic Pneumocephalus: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial pneumocephalus, the accumulation of air, occurs most frequently from trauma, tumor, cranial surgeries, or infection. Intraparenchymal otogenic pneumocephalus is a rare but well-documented development. We describe a patient who developed pneumocephalus in the context of eardrum perforation secondary to toothpick use for ear wax. CASE DESCRIPTION: An 86-year-old female presented to the emergency room with a 1-day history of dysarthria and a few days of cough and sneezing. History revealed she had recently been advised to avoid Q-Tips to clean her ears and instead was us

Acute Otitis Media and Group A Streptococcal Pharyngitis: A Review for the General Pediatric Practitioner.

For pediatric practitioners, acute otitis media (AOM) and group A streptococcal pharyngitis are two of the most common infections seen in ambulatory practices. The purpose of this article is to review these conditions with the focus of highlighting evidence-based guidelines. AOM in children is a visual diagnosis and not one that can be made on history alone. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines have clear criteria to aid clinicians in how to diagnose AOM. The pneumatic otoscope is the standard tool used to diagnose otitis media, and the AAP guidelines stress developing proficien

Otologic evaluation of patients with primary antibody deficiency.

Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) represents the most frequent primary immunodeficiency, often encountered in the ENT clinical practice. The clinical spectrum of CVID is quite broad, but otitis media are certainly among the most common clinical manifestations. This prospective study enrolled 60 patients (34 males, 26 females) with a previous diagnosis of CVID with the aim of performing an otologic evaluation and a more precision characterization of incidence, diagnosis, and treatment of otitis media in this group of patients. In consideration that Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) could

[Imaging diagnosis of benign lesions of the external auditory canal].

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Benign lesions of the external auditory canal (EAC) are an infrequent cause of temporal bone CT scan requests. We are not usually well versed in the different pathologies located in the EAC, perhaps because it is "only" a conduit and the relevant anatomical structures are located in the middle and inner ear. Our objective was to improve knowledge of this structure by reviewing the different benign conditions found in this location. METHODS: We reviewed the CT studies from 2 years (January 2010 through January 2012), selecting those containing lesions in the EAC. T
