Auditory findings and electrophysiologics in individuals with G/BBB syndrome.

UNLABELLED: The G/BBB syndrome is a rare condition characterized by hypertelorism, cleft lip and palate, and hypospadias. No studies were found on the hearing of individuals with this syndrome. AIM: To investigate the auditory function in patients with G/BBB syndrome, such as the occurrence of hearing loss, and central and peripheral auditory nerve conduction. METHODS: Fourteen male patients aged 7-34 years with the G/BBB syndrome were assessed by otoscopy, audiometry, tympanometry and evoked auditory brainstem response (ABR). MODEL: A retrospective clinical series study. RESULTS: Audiomet…

Diagnosis and treatment of otitis media.

Diagnostic criteria for acute otitis media include rapid onset of symptoms, middle ear effusion, and signs and symptoms of middle ear inflammation. Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis are the most common bacterial isolates from the middle ear fluid of children with acute otitis media. Fever, otalgia, headache, irritability, cough, rhinitis, listlessness, anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, and pulling at the ears are common, but nonspecific symptoms. Detection of middle ear effusion by pneumatic otoscopy is key in establishing the diagnosis. Observation is an …

Middle ear problems in Aboriginal school children cause developmental and educational concerns.

An epidemiological study was carried out in the year 2000 and sought to measure the occurrences of middle ear disease and hearing loss within school aged (4 years to 12 years) Aboriginal children. A number of the local schools and preschools in Coraki and Lismore with a high percentage of Aboriginal students were selected in an effort to identify service gaps regarding essential hearing screenings and assessments. A total of 185 (370 ears) Aboriginal children aged 4 years to 12 years were examined from four schools and three preschools. This examination included otoscopy, tympanometry and audi…

3D Otoscope: toward an extra diagnostic dimension for middle-ear related issues.

We present an industrially manufacturable digital otoscope designed to measure the three-dimensional shape of the tympanic membrane while being compatible with standard examination procedures. The system employs optical profilometry and overcomes the limitations of previous work by integrating single-shot surface reconstruction strategies-from classical Fourier profilometry to modern deep learning methods-thereby eliminating the need for multi-pattern projection and, in the latter case, even phase unwrapping. A full-field three-dimensional surface map enables the assessment of the tympanic mem

Most respondents (29.1%) stated the minimum tests required were 'history', 'otoscopy', 'pure tone audiometry' and 'MRI' (magnetic resonance imaging), although some chose as few as one test (3.49%) and others up to seven (1.2%). Management of venous pulsatile tinnitus with normal otoscopic findings.

We conducted a retrospective study to analyze the therapeutic effects of ligation of the internal jugular vein in a series of adults with pulsatile tinnitus of venous origin. Our study group was made up of 12 patients-all women, aged 27 to 61 years (mean: 40 ± 6.1)-who had been diagnosed with venous pulsatile tinnitus and who were treated with jugular vein ligation. Follow-up had been conducted by telephone interviews for 1 to 6 years postoperatively to assess tinnitus status over the long term. Seven patients achieved complete relief of their tinnitus immediately after surgery, but 5 of them

Facial Nerve Schwannoma Mimicking Post-Traumatic Middle-Ear Disease: A Diagnostic Pitfall.

Facial nerve schwannoma may present with otological symptoms despite preserved facial nerve function, creating a diagnostic challenge when the lesion involves the middle ear. A 75-year-old man developed aural fullness and hearing loss following craniofacial trauma. Otoscopy revealed a dark reddish retrotympanic mass. Computed tomography demonstrated soft-tissue opacification of the middle ear and mastoid with a tegmen tympani defect, raising suspicion of post-traumatic middle-ear disease with cerebrospinal fluid leakage. Facial function remained normal. Surgical exploration confirmed a dural d…

Cholesteatoma-induced cerebellopontine abscess; a misdiagnosed case of chronic otitis media with temporal bone erosion: A case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Cholesteatoma is a destructive lesion of keratinizing squamous epithelium in the temporal bone. Its indolent progression often delays diagnosis, leading to osteolytic erosion and temporal bone defects. CASE PRESENTATION: A 20-year-old Syrian male presented with progressive left-sided postauricular swelling, headache, fatigue, and hearing loss, which had recurred intermittently over the past two years. Each episode was treated symptomatically with antibiotics by local providers without further investigation. On admission, he was febrile (38 °C), and otoscopy revealed an intact ty…

Isolated abducens nerve involvement as a revealing sign of temporal bone fracture: A case report.

Isolated abducens nerve palsy is an uncommon yet clinically significant manifestation of temporal bone fracture, often following blunt head trauma. We report the case of a 52-year-old woman who sustained a right-sided head injury after a domestic fall under the influence of alcohol. She presented with diplopia, vertigo, and right-sided conductive hearing loss. Clinical examination revealed impaired abduction of the right eye, anisocoria with mydriasis, right retroauricular ecchymosis, and facial hypoesthesia in the maxillary (V2) and mandibular (V3) territories. Otoscopy showed hemotympanum, a…

Infantile inflammatory pseudotumor of the facial nerve as a complication of epidermal nevus syndrome with cholesteatoma.

The first reported case of facial paralysis due to an inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT) of the facial nerve as a complication of epidermal nevus syndrome (ENS) is herein presented. A 10-month-old female patient was diagnosed with ENS at 3 months of age. She was referred to us because of moderate left facial paralysis. Epidermal nevi of her left auricle extended deep into the external ear canal. Otoscopy revealed polypous nevi and cholesteatoma debris filling the left ear. Computed tomography showed a soft mass filling the ear canal, including the middle ear, and an enormously enlarged facial nerv…
