The Utility of the Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT) as a Treatment Outcome Measure in Nonsinogenic Facial Pain Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to assess the strength of correlation between the Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT) subdomains to determine which bore the greatest disease burden so that it could be used as a suitable measure of clinical response. METHODS: Prospective clinical audit of patients attending the Liverpool Multi-Disciplinary Facial Pain Clinic. The Brief Pain Inventory-Facial (BPI-F) was used as a comparator and surrogate measure of quality of life. RESULTS: Fifty patients (38 female) were reviewed, of whom 66% had midfacial segment pain. The total SNOT score was highly

Cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between radiographic features and measures of pain and physical function in hand osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Previous longitudinal studies have shown no associations between increasing amount of radiographic hand osteoarthritis (OA) and levels of hand pain/disability. In this longitudinal study, we aimed to study whether radiographic hand OA was related to pain/disability in cross-sectional and longitudinal settings focusing on joint-specific analyses. METHODS: We included 190 patients (173 women, mean (standard deviation, SD) age 61.5 (5.7) years) from the Oslo hand OA cohort, of whom 112 had 7-year follow-up data. Finger joints were scored for radiographic OA according to the Kellgren-L

Measuring patient experiences in Fabry disease: validation of the Fabry-specific Pediatric Health and Pain Questionnaire (FPHPQ).

INTRODUCTION: Common symptoms for children with Anderson-Fabry Disease (FD) such as acroparaesthesia and gastrointestinal manifestations can only be objectively assessed in patients using a valid instrument. To date, no such instrument exists. METHODS: A preliminary 40-item measure of symptoms and experience with FD, the Fabry-specific Paediatric Health and Pain Questionnaire (FPHPQ) was developed, but lacked a formal assessment of its measurement properties. The FPHPQ was used in the Fabry Outcome Survey (FOS), a registry for all patients with a confirmed diagnosis of FD who are receiving ag

Associations of anatomical measures from MRI with radiographically defined knee osteoarthritis score, pain, and physical functioning.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of knee osteoarthritis is traditionally based on radiographic findings, but magnetic resonance imaging is now being used to provide better visualization of bone, cartilage, and soft tissues as well as the patellar compartment. The goal of this study was to estimate the prevalences of knee features defined on magnetic resonance imaging in a population and to relate these abnormalities to knee osteoarthritis severity scores based on radiographic findings, physical functioning, and reported knee pain in middle-aged women. METHODS: Magnetic resonance images of the knee

Enhancing pain care with the American Pain Society Patient Outcome Questionnaire for use in the emergency department (APS-POQ-RED): validating a patient-reported outcome measure.

BACKGROUND: In general, the quality of pain care in emergency departments (ED) is poor, despite up to 80% of all ED patients presenting with pain. This may be due to the lack of well-validated patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) of pain care in the ED setting. The American Pain Society-Patient Outcome Questionnaire-Revised Edition (APS-POQ-R), with slight modification for ED patients, is a potentially useful PROM for the adult ED, however it is yet to be completely validated. METHODS: Adult patients, who had presented with moderate to severe acute pain, were recruited at two large inner

Development of patient reported outcome measures assessing tumor pain intensity and tumor pain interference for individuals with neurofibromatosis type 1 and plexiform neurofibromas: qualitative findings.

BACKGROUND: Pain is a common symptom in individuals with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) that often is associated with plexiform neurofibroma (pNF) tumors. To date, no patient-reported outcome measures have been validated specifically to assess pNF-related pain intensity or pain interference in this population. Such measures are sorely needed since pain is being considered as an outcome in clinical trials targeting reduction of pNF. The study aims were to: (1) obtain qualitative information from individuals with NF1 and pNFs about their pain and its measurement and (2) modify existing scales to

Patient-reported outcome measures for hip-related pain: a review of the available evidence and a consensus statement from the International Hip-related Pain Research Network, Zurich 2018.

Hip-related pain is a well-recognised complaint among active young and middle-aged active adults. People experiencing hip-related disorders commonly report pain and reduced functional capacity, including difficulties in executing activities of daily living. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are essential to accurately examine and compare the effects of different treatments on disability in those with hip pain. In November 2018, 38 researchers and clinicians working in the field of hip-related pain met in Zurich, Switzerland for the first International Hip-related Pain Research Network

Quantitative sensory testing-based sensory phenotypes align with measures of peripheral nerve damage in patients with painful polyneuropathies.

Quantitative sensory testing (QST) is increasingly used to stratify patients with peripheral neuropathic pain into sensory phenotypes that may reflect distinct underlying pain mechanisms. Yet, their correspondence with objective measures of peripheral nerve damage remains unclear. This study investigated whether QST-based phenotypes are associated with objective measures of peripheral nerve damage in patients with painful polyneuropathy. We retrospectively analyzed data from 130 patients with painful polyneuropathy, who underwent nerve conduction studies, distal leg skin biopsy, and QST at the
