In a retrospective study at Hospital del Niño in Panama City, Panama, 577 neonates with culture-proved sepsis and/or meningitis were identified during an 18-year period (1975 to 1992). Overall there was an incidence of 3.5 cases/1000 live births. Three hundred thirty-three patients (58%) were of low birth weight (< 2500 g) and 260 (45%) were premature. Anopheles albitarsis obtained from Villavicencio, Colombia, were colonized in the laboratory using force-mating techniques. Laboratory reared mosquitoes were allowed to feed on Aotus monkeys infected with the Salvador II or the Rio Meta strains of Plasmodium vivax from El Salvador and Colombia, respectively. In comparison with other species, the An. albitarsis were less susceptible than Anopheles freeborni, Anopheles culicifacies and strains of Anopheles albimanus from El Salvador, Panama and Colombia and more susceptible than a strain of An. albimanus from Haiti.

We documented the community disassembly of a Neotropical tadpole community during a chytridiomycosis outbreak, triggered by the generalist fungal pathogen, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd). A study by hemagglutination-inhibition test showed that 19 strains of eastern equine encephalitis virus grouped themselves in two main types, which have been designated North American and South American. The former consists of ten strains from the eastern half of the United States, from Massachusetts to Florida; Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and, subject to confirmation, Thailand. The South American type comprises nine strains from Panama, Trinidad, British Guiana, Brazil, and Argentina. The strains were isolated from different natural hosts over a period of 30 years.
