Two Cases of Frontal Sinus Inverted Papilloma Treated With a Combined Bifrontal Craniotomy and Endonasal Endoscopic Approach.

An inverted papilloma of the frontal sinus is a challenging lesion for surgeons, for both anatomical and pathological reasons. Despite the trend away from an external approach and towards an endonasal endoscopic approach, indications for an external approach remain. The options for an external approach include endoscopic frontal trephination, transpalpebral orbital craniotomy, a supraorbital transeyebrow approach, an osteoplastic flap, and bifrontal craniotomy with cranialization. Each approach has advantages and disadvantages. Deciding on the appropriate approach is important for the patient'

Does evaluation of tumor volume or/both origination site better guide to optimal surgery for inverted papilloma?

INTRODUCTION: Sinonasal inverted papilloma is noted for its high rate of recurrence. Staging systems aid to reduce recurrence and avoid excessive surgeries by guiding the selection of the optimal surgical approach. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of different endoscopic approaches in inverted papilloma by assessing tumor origin site and tumor volume. METHODS: Krouse classification system that is based on tumor volume was used for staging; furthermore, tumor origin sites were grouped as lateral nasal wall, medial wall and other walls of maxillary sinus. The main treatment method for

[Synchronous presentation of inverted papilloma with transitional carcinoma focus in right kidney pelvis and bladder urothelial carcinoma].

We report a case with synchronous presentation of inverted papilloma (I.P) and transitional cell carcinoma of the right renal pelvis (pT2G1) associated to urothelial carcinoma on left lateral wall of the bladder (T1G2). Urothelial inverted papilloma is an uncommon, generally benign tumor that account for 2.2% of all urothelial tumors. Although the preferred location is the bladder (90%), above all in trigone and bladder neck, also can be located at the UUT "upper urinary tract" (7-8%) and urethra (3%). A close follow-up is recommended after conservative therapy, mainly endoscopic procedure, du

[Report of 2 new cases of bladder inverted papilloma, one with them complicated with acute urinary obstruction].

Inverted papilloma is a rare tumour (2.2% of urothelial tumours) considered to be benign. The bladder is the most frequent site and growth tends to be endophytic towards the submucosa. Haematuria and obstruction symptoms appear to be the most typical clinical manifestations. Contribution of two cases of inverted bladder papilloma; one showing very unusual clinical development with relapsing acute urinary obstruction. Strict follow-up is recommended in spite of its benign behaviour as it may become associated to transitional cell carcinoma. Literature review on this tumoral entity in terms of e

Follow-up of patients with inverted papilloma of the nasal cavities: computer tomography, video-endoscopy, acoustic rhinometry?

Seventeen patients were operated suffering from unilateral inverted papilloma of the nasal cavities, in one male associated with malignancy. We investigated these patients pre- and post-operatively by clinical examination, video-endoscopy, acoustic rhinometry, and computed tomography (CT). The aim was to find out which technique delivers reliable information about tumour recurrence in follow-up. By these controls three recurrences could be detected in a period of two-years' follow-up. Our results showed that the combination of CT, video-endoscopy and histological examination of biopsies is rel

Long-term results of nasolacrimal duct and inferior turbinate swing technique for inverted papilloma of the maxillary sinus.

BACKGROUND: We developed a technique to preserve the entire nasolacrimal duct and inferior turbinate, by swinging the nasolacrimal duct upward and the inferior turbinate backward; that is, a nasolacrimal duct and inferior turbinate swing technique for sinonasal inverted papilloma of the maxillary sinus. In this study, we evaluated the long-term results of this technique. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on the data for 53 consecutive pathologically confirmed inverted papilloma patients who were treated using nasolacrimal duct and inferior turbinate swing technique. Establishment and genetic characterization of cell lines derived from proliferating nasal polyps and sinonasal inverted papillomas.

To better understand the pathogenesis of nasal polyps (NPs) and sinonasal inverted papillomas (SIPs), we aimed to establish cell lines from fresh tissues of NPs and SIPs and characterize them. Primary cell cultures were obtained from two NP tissues (NP2 and NP3) and one SIP tissue (IP4). All the cells were polygonal in shape, expressed cytokeratin 14, and had normal diploid chromosome status. HPV58 DNA was detected in NP3. To obtain immortal primary cells, NP2 and IP4 cells were transduced with a combination of mutant CDK4, cyclinD1 and TERT. These cells were thereafter named NP2/K4DT and IP4/

Endoscopic Modified Medial Maxillectomy for Resection of an Inverted Papilloma Originating from the Entire Circumference of the Maxillary Sinus.

For treatment of a sinonasal inverted papilloma (IP), it is essential to have a definite diagnosis, to identify its origin by computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and to select the appropriate surgical approach based on the staging system proposed by Krouse. Recently, a new surgical approach named endoscopic modified medial maxillectomy (EMMM) was proposed. This approach can preserve the inferior turbinate and nasolacrimal duct. We successfully treated sinonasal IP with EMMM in a 71-year-old female patient. In this patient, the sinonasal IP originated from the entire

Computed tomography and/or magnetic resonance imaging for pre-operative planning for inverted nasal papilloma: review of evidence.

BACKGROUND: Inverted nasal papilloma is a benign tumour with variable biological behaviour. It is a unique neoplasm and is often difficult to manage, being characterised by a tendency to recur following excision, an association with malignancy and an ability to destroy bone. Radiological diagnosis has traditionally been based on computed tomography, but it is often impossible to differentiate between polyps with entrapped debris and inverted nasal papilloma. Magnetic resonance imaging, especially T2-weighted images, is perhaps a better tool in differentiating inverted nasal papilloma from othe

Utilizing radiomics for differential diagnosis of inverted papilloma and chronic rhinosinusitis with polyps based on unenhanced CT scans.

To evaluate whether radiomics models based on unenhanced paranasal sinuses CT images could be a useful tool for differentiating inverted papilloma (IP) from chronic rhinosinusitis with polyps (CRSwNP). This retrospective study recruited 240 patients with CRSwNP and 106 patients with IP from three centers. 253 patients from Qilu Hospital were randomly divided into the training set (n = 151) and the internal validation set (n = 102) with a ratio of 6:4. 93 patients from the other two centers were used as the external validation set. The patients with the unilateral disease (n = 115) from Qilu Ho

[A case of sinonasal inverted papilloma with malignant transformation and distant metastasis: a 10-year follow-up report].

Sinonasal inverted papilloma(SNIP) is a kind of benign tumor originating from the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, accounting for 70% of papillomas. The incidence of the disease is more common in males, with an average age of 50-60 years. It is most likely to occur in unilateral maxillary sinus and ethmoid sinus, followed by sphenoid sinus and frontal sinus. It has the characteristics of local invasion, high recurrence rate and malignant tendency, and most malignant transformation into squamous cell carcinoma. Endoscopic nasal resection and appropriate adjuvant therapy can help to reduce the

Presence of Tertiary Lymphoid Organ in Nasal Inverted Papilloma Is Correlated with Eosinophil Infiltration and Local Immunoglobulin Production.

INTRODUCTION: Nasal inverted papilloma (NIP) is a benign tumour with multiple inflammatory cell infiltration. Tertiary lymphoid organs (TLOs) support local antibody production and play important roles in airway inflammation. However, the evidence of TLOs and local immunoglobulins in NIP has not been reported yet. We investigated the presence of TLOs and immunoglobulins in NIP tissues and their association with the clinical-pathological characteristics of NIPs. METHODS: We analyzed the occurrence and composition of TLOs and local immunoglobulins by immunohistochemistry and evaluated the lymph

Apoptotic and proliferative status in HPV (+) and HPV (-) inverted papilloma patients. Correlation with local recurrence and clinicopathological variables.

Inverted papilloma (IP) is a rare sinonasal benign lesion characterized by aggressive biological behavior. Our aim was to evaluate the expression of various proliferation and apoptotic markers and the presence of HPV genotypes in paraffin sections gathered from surgically treated IP patients. Immunohistochemistry for PCNA, bax, cytochrome c and caspase-8 and flow cytometry for the detection of apoptosis, necrosis and ki67 expression were performed. The identification of various HPV subtypes was achieved by nested PCR amplification. Nasal polyps (NP) and specimens from normal nasal epithelium (

[Possibility and limits of the endonasal approach in sinonasal inverted papilloma cases--the technique and own experience. Preliminary report].

The aim of this article is to present the technique of endonasal operation due to sinonasal inverted papilloma with it's limitations. Material consists of 21 patients operated with microscope and endoscopes. The tumor is resected in few pieces, but I try (especially in the beginning) to keep the resected tumor as much as possible in one part--which makes easier to assess the tumor borders. Mostly it is possible to leave at place the inferior turbinate and only the upper part of it must be resected with the tumor. Involvement of the frontal sinus is the contraindications for a purely endonasal

[Inverted papillomas in nasal fossa and sinuses. Bringing up to date their clinical, radiological and pathological diagnosis and treatment].

The present work shows 13 cases of inverted papillomas of the nasal fossae treated at the Fundación Jiménez Díaz from 1954 to 1992. Four of them were found in the lateral wall of the nose, one in the nasal septum and the other one in the frontal sinus. The latter coexisted with a transient carcinoma. One of them suffered a secondary malignant process. This paper discusses the etiology of these tumors, their histology, clinical features, radiological aspects, trend to relapse or malignancy, as well as the most effective treatment in the authors' opinion.
