The spinal cord is a conduit within the central nervous system (CNS) that provides ongoing communication between the brain and the rest of the body, conveying complex sensory and motor information necessary for safety, movement, reflexes, and optimization of autonomic function. After a spinal cord injury (SCI), supraspinal influences on the spinal segmental control system and autonomic nervous system (ANS) are disrupted, leading to spastic paralysis, pain and dysesthesia, sympathetic blunting and parasympathetic dominance resulting in cardiac dysrhythmias, systemic hypotension, bronchoconstric

In inflammatory disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, cytokines and danger signals are sensed by the central nervous system, which adapts behavior and physiologic responses during systemic stress. The central nervous system can also signal the periphery to modulate inflammation through efferent hormonal and neuronal pathways. The brain and spinal cord are involved in this bidirectional interaction. A variety of neuronal pathways that modulate synovial inflammation have been implicated, including the sympathetic and the parasympathetic branches of the autonomic system. Another mechanism, the

Fetal heart rate (FHR) deceleration is the most common change seen during labor. The role of the autonomic nervous system in regulating the fetal cardiovascular response during multiple uterine contractions has been well-established. However, the mechanism underlying the hemodynamic response remains unclear and the specific reflex that mediates the cardiovascular modifications is still controversial. This study aimed to determine the role of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems on fetal hemodynamics in complete cord occlusion. Chronically instrumented fetal sheep were randomized to rece

Reliable and effective noninvasive measures of sympathetic and parasympathetic peripheral outflow are of crucial importance in cardiovascular physiology. Although many techniques have been proposed to take up this long-lasting challenge, none has proposed a satisfying discrimination of the dynamics of the two separate branches. Spectral analysis of heart rate variability is the most currently used technique for such assessment. Despite its widespread use, it has been demonstrated that the subdivision in the low-frequency (LF) and high-frequency (HF) bands does not fully reflect separate influe

The risk of sexual sequelae after proctectomy for inflammatory disease or polyposis is moderate, but real. The pelvic nerves can be easily spared at the sites where they are most frequently damaged, i.e. anterior to the sacral promontory and on the lateral walls of the pelvis. In contrast, damage to the cavernosal nerves situated on either side of the posterior surface of the prostate is more difficult to avoid, essentially because of the anatomy of these nerves is poorly understood.

The distribution and morphology of preganglionic neurons in the sacral parasympathetic nucleus (SPN) of the cat have been studied with the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) tracing technique. HRP applied to the cut pelvic nerve was identified in cells located ipsilaterally, primarily in the intermediate gray matter. They formed a column approximately 10 mm long, usually contained within two, but occasionally three, sacral segments, S2 contained a majority of cells. In transverse sections the SPN had the appearance of an inverted "L". Cells were medium-sized, oval or spindle-shaped, and transversely

The effective management of cardiovascular diseases requires knowledge of intrinsic and extrinsic innervation of the heart and an understanding of how perturbations of said components affect cardiac function. The innate cardiac conduction system, which begins with cardiac pacemaker cells and terminates with subendocardial Purkinje fibers, is modulated by said systems. The intrinsic component of the cardiac autonomic nervous system, which remains incompletely elucidated, consists of intracardiac ganglia and interconnecting neurons that tightly regulate cardiac electrical activity. Extrinsic com

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) have a complex, multifactorial pathophysiology with an unmet need for effective treatment. This calls for novel strategies to improve disease outcome and quality of life for patients. Increasing evidence suggests that autonomic nerves and neurotransmitters, as well as neuropeptides, modulate the intestinal immune system, and thereby regulate the intestinal inflammatory processes. Although the autonomic nervous system is classically divided in a sympathetic and parasympathetic branch, both play a pivotal role in the crosstalk with the immune system, with the en

Blood flow in the gingiva, comprising the interdental papilla as well as attached and marginal gingiva, is important for maintaining of gingival function and is modulated by risk factors such as stress that may lead to periodontal disease. Marked blood flow changes mediated by the autonomic (parasympathetic and sympathetic) nervous system may be essential for gingival hemodynamics. However, differences in autonomic vasomotor responses and their functional significance in different parts of the gingiva are unclear. We examined the differences in autonomic vasomotor responses and their interacti

Autoimmune autonomic disorders are common, though often under-recognized, and suboptimally understood. Autonomic nervous system impairment may result from immune-mediated damage to central or peripheral autonomic pathways, and typically involve both sympathetic and parasympathetic systems, as well as the enteric nervous system. Various autoimmune conditions may primarily involve the autonomic nervous system, as in autoimmune autonomic ganglionopathy associated with ganglionic nicotinic acetylcholine receptor antibodies or may involve autonomic systems as part of a multisystem neurologic proces

Pulmonary artery hypertension (PAH) is a chronic vascular disease defined by the elevation of pulmonary vascular resistance and mean pulmonary artery pressure, which arises due to pulmonary vascular remodelling. Prior research has already established a link between the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and PAH. Therefore, the rebalancing of the ANS offers a promising approach for the treatment of PAH. The process of rebalancing involves two key aspects: inhibiting an overactive sympathetic nervous system and fortifying the impaired parasympathetic nervous system through pharmacological or interve…

Dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system has been implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease, including congestive heart failure and cardiac arrhythmias. Despite advances in the medical and surgical management of these entities, progression of disease persists as does the risk for sudden cardiac death. With improved knowledge of the dynamic relationships between the nervous system and heart, neuromodulatory techniques such as cardiac sympathetic denervation and vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) have emerged as possible therapeutic approaches for the management of these disorders.

The autonomic nervous system plays an integral role in motion and sensation as well as the physiologic function of visceral organs. The nervous system additionally plays a key role in primary liver diseases. Until recently, however, the impact of nerves on cancer development, progression, and metastasis has been unappreciated. This review highlights recent advances in understanding neuroanatomical networks within solid organs and their mechanistic influence on organ function, specifically in the liver and liver cancer. We discuss the interaction between the autonomic nervous system, including

We propose a single-lead ECG-based heart rate variability (HRV) analysis algorithm to quantify autonomic nervous system activity during meditation. Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) induced by breathing is a dominant component of HRV, but its frequency depends on an individual's breathing speed. To address this RSA issue, we designed a novel HRV tachogram decomposition algorithm and new HRV indices. The proposed method was validated by using a simulation, and applied to our experimental (mindfulness meditation) data and the WESAD open-source data. During meditation, our proposed HRV indices r

Yoga therapy is a mind-body intervention that can be an important solution in the treatment of anxiety. Yoga therapy alleviates the hyperarousal of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the hypervigilance of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis that occurs in anxiety. Yoga therapy activates the parasympathetic branch of the nervous system, replacing SNS overdrive, or the flight-or-fight response, with the relaxation response and balancing the nervous system. Yoga therapy increases positive coping skills and builds self-esteem without harmful side effects. The results of this case s

The renal pelvis and the ureter represent a functional system with myogenic excitation generation and conduction. The activity of this system is modulated by the autonomic nervous system: alpha-adrenergic and cholinergic substances stimulate, beta-adrenergic drugs inhibit the pyeloureteral activity. Besides the sympathetic nervous system with adrenergic postganglionic excitation conduction and the parasympathetic nervous system with cholinergic transmission, non-adrenergic, non-cholinergic systems appear to exist. Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), e.g., markably decreases the frequency and …

BACKGROUND: E-sports gained growing recognition as a competitive pursuit with quantifiable physiological demands. While previous studies have shown that cognitive stress modulates energy metabolism and autonomic nervous system regulation, phase-specific physiological responses during gameplay remain poorly understood.
METHODS: 20 elite League of Legends players (rank ≥ Platinum) were enrolled. Their cardiopulmonary function and autonomic nervous system activity were monitored during rest and across three distinct match phases (early-, mid-, and late-game). Energy metabolism parameters were me
