Ultrastructural localizations of phosphatases were observed in the rat parathyroid gland. Activities of alkaline phosphatase and adenosine triphosphatase were found on the caveolae or pinocytotic vesicles of the capillary endothelia. In the parenchymal cells, they were demonstrated to be stronger both at the plasma membranes facing the pericapillary space and at their transitional portions to the lateral plasma membranes than at the remaining lateral plasma membranes including microvilli. Activities of thiamine pyrophosphatase and inosine diphosphatase were detected on one or two layers of lam

The parathyroid glands of fresh-water turtles (Pseudemys scripta and Chrysemys picta) are composed of cords of cells in which dark and light variants of chief cells and occasional oxyphil cells can be distinguished. Cytoplasmic granules measuring about 0.3-0.4 μm and all the cellular organelles associated with protein and carbohydrate synthesis can be seen in both dark and light chief cells; the cytoplasm of oxyphils is packed with mitochondria which obscure other organelles. An unusual feature of the dark chief cells is the presence of crystalline-like material within parallel arrays of ciste…

The effect of hypermagnesemia, produced by MgCl(2) infusion, on the activity of parathyroid glands, as assessed by changes in levels of serum calcium (S(Ca)) and in the fraction of filtered phosphate excreted (C(P)/C(Cr)), was studied in 11 intact and 4 thyroparathyroidectomized (T-PTX) dogs. To exclude the effect of diurnal variation in C(P)/C(Cr) on the results, studies were initiated in both morning and afternoon hours and each study with MgCl(2) infusion was paired with a control experiment in the same dog not receiving MgCl(2). During MgCl(2) infusion, serum phosphorus rose progressively.…

1. Tetany occurs spontaneously in many forms and may also be produced by the destruction of the parathyroid glands. Recent researches tend to demonstrate an intimate relation between the various forms of tetany and relative or absolute insufficiency of the parathyroid gland. 2. The parathyroid glands are independent organs with definite specific function. Whether or not this function is intimately related to that of other organs of internal secretion is not as yet proven. 3. The number and distribution of the parathyroid glands varies. Failure to produce tetany experimentally is probably due t…
