Lymphoepithelial carcinoma of salivary glands: CT and MR imaging findings.

OBJECTIVES: To depict the CT and MRI characteristics of salivary gland lymphoepithelial carcinoma (LEC) and provide more diagnostic information for this malignancy. METHODS: 103 salivary gland LEC subjects were retrospectively reviewed. The subjects include 35 males with a mean age of 40.8 years and 68 females with a mean age of 49.4 years. Of the 103 subjects, 86 had carcinomas in the parotid gland, 5 in the submandibular gland, 1 in the sublingual gland, 3 in the cheek and 8 in the palate. All subjects underwent routine CT and MRI (plain and contrast-enhanced scans) prior to surgical treatm

Oncocytic adenocarcinoma of salivary glands.

Oncocytic adenocarcinoma of salivary gland origin is an extremely rare neoplasm. The diagnosis is established on the basis of oncocytic cellular features in conjunction with dysplastic change. These dysplastic changes may occur in benign oncocytomas or arise de novo. The tumor occurs most commonly in the parotid glands of persons over 60 years of age. Tumors that measure less than 2 cm at the initial surgical procedure appear to have a better prognosis than larger tumors. Aggressive surgical intervention at the initial presentation of the neoplasm, compared to simple enucleation, seems to offe

Machine learning-based radiomics for histological classification of parotid tumors using morphological MRI: a comparative study.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of machine learning models based on morphological magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) radiomics in the classification of parotid tumors. METHODS: In total, 298 patients with parotid tumors were randomly assigned to a training and test set at a ratio of 7:3. Radiomics features were extracted from the morphological MRI images and screened using the Select K Best and LASSO algorithm. Three-step machine learning models with XGBoost, SVM, and DT algorithms were developed to classify the parotid neoplasms into four subtypes. The ROC curve was used to measure t…

Cytopathological findings of proliferating pilomatricoma misdiagnosed as a malignant parotid gland tumor.

BACKGROUND: Pilomatricoma is a relatively common benign cutaneous adnexal neoplasm with differentiation towards the hair matrix, inner sheath of hair follicle and hair cortex. Proliferating pilomatricoma is a rare variant of pilomatricoma that can rapidly increase and may be misidentified as a malignant tumor. We herein report the cytopathological findings of proliferating pilomatricoma misdiagnosed as a malignant parotid tumor. CASE PRESENTATION: A 64-year-old man noticed an acne-like nodule in the left parotid region. It was painless, but it increased to a maximum diameter of 4.5 cm over 2

Imaging characteristics of recurrent pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common parotid neoplasm. It has a relatively high rate of recurrence after surgery. Imaging features of recurrent parotid pleomorphic adenoma have been infrequently reported in the radiology literature. In the present study, we reviewed our institutional experience with imaging of recurrent parotid pleomorphic adenomas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective imaging and chart review of 24 patients (9 men, 15 women; age, 29-63 years) with recurrent pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid were performed. Images were reviewed as to the margins, si

Acinic cell carcinoma of the parotid gland: from pathogenesis to management: a literature review.

PURPOSE: Acinic cell carcinoma (ACCs) is uncommon malignant epithelial neoplasm of the salivary glands; the most common presentation is a well-defined painless solid mass. Diagnosis of ACCs is frequently complicated, due to its similarity with benign tumors. METHODS: A review of the literature available on ACCs was carried out. Studies were sourced from PubMed with searching of relevant headings and sub-headings and cross-referencing. RESULTS: There are no clear characteristics of ACCs found on CT, MRI and ultrasound imaging. The management of the ACC, a rare malignancy of the parotid gland,

A large basal cell adenoma extending to the ipsilateral skull base and mastoid in the right parotid gland: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Basal cell adenoma (BCA) is a rare benign tumour that has unique histological characteristics and primarily arises in the parotid glands. According to published reports, nearby tissue destruction by BCA seems impossible. CASE SUMMARY: We presented a case of a 54-year-old woman with a mass in the deep lobe of the right parotid gland involving the ipsilateral skull base and mastoid. The patient exhibited gradual right facial swelling but no other obvious symptoms. Combined resection of the total right parotid gland and partial skull base excision were performed. The biopsy conducted

Salivary gland tumors - our experience.

Salivary gland neoplasms represent the most complex and diverse group of tumors encountered by the head and neck oncologist. Their diagnosis and management is complicated by their relative infrequency (1% of head and neck tumors)1, the limited amount of pre-treatment information available and the wide range of biologic behavior seen with the different pathologic lesion. Approximately 80% of salivary gland tumors are found in the parotid gland, 10 to 15% in the submandibular gland and 5 to 10% in the minor salivary glands. This retrospective study was conducted at government Medical college & H

Multimodality Imaging of Warthin's Tumor: PET/CT, Scintigraphy, MRI, and CT.

Warthin's tumor is a benign salivary gland neoplasm that can exhibit intense FDG uptake, potentially mimicking malignant lesions on oncologic imaging. We report a case of a 78-year-old man undergoing staging for suspected lung cancer, in whom a hypermetabolic lesion was incidentally detected in the left parotid gland on [18F]FDG PET/CT. Correlation with prior salivary scintigraphy, MRI, and CT supported the likelihood of Warthin's tumor, which was subsequently confirmed by fine-needle aspiration cytology. This case illustrates how multimodality imaging can provide complementary diagnostic info

Primary small cell carcinoma of the parotid: Fine needle aspiration and immunohistochemical features of a neuroendocrine variant.

Salivary gland small cell carcinoma (SGSmCC) is extremely rare, accounting for less than 1% of salivary gland tumors. A 42-year-old female patient came to the outpatient clinic due to a mass localized in the left submandibular space and that had been growing since 3-4 months. The fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) matched with small cell carcinoma (SmCC). As no other focus was detected by computerized tomography (CT), it was accepted as a primary neoplasm of the parotid gland. The histopathological assessment of the excised material and immunohistochemical staining demonstrated a neuroendo

Crystalloid granulomas of the parotid gland mimicking tumor: a case report with review of the literature.

Crystals and crystalloids may be seen in salivary glands in association with tumors and cysts. Rarely, crystalloids may lead to granulomatous reaction mimicking neoplasm and infectious diseases. We present the case of an 81-year-old man with right parotid gland swelling and a clinical and radiological diagnosis of tumor. A granulomatous inflammation was seen on intraoperative pathology. On final pathology, the parotid gland showed multiple granulomas with central cavitation and palisading histiocytes with eosinophilic intracytoplasmic and extracellular crystalloids. The crystalloids were varia

Occult primary parotid gland acinic cell adenocarcinoma presenting with extensive lung metastasis.

Acinic cell adenocarcinoma is a malignant salivary gland neoplasm with a relatively low rate of lymphangitic spread to regional lymph nodes. Distant metastases are rare and their occurrence typically indicates an unfavorable outcome. We encountered an unusual example of acinic cell adenocarcinoma that initially presented in the lung, whereas the primary parotid carcinoma, despite extensive clinical evaluation, only became apparent 1 year after initial diagnosis. The histologic, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural features of the tumor in the parotid gland and lung were similar. The tumor

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the parotid glands and its relationship with benign lymphoepithelial lesions.

The salivary glands, despite their relatively simple morphology, give rise to more than 30 histologically distinct benign and malignant tumors. Salivary gland neoplasms comprise less than 2% of all tumors in humans and 3% of all head and neck tumors. They arise in the parotid gland in 80% of cases, and approximately 80% are benign and 20% are malignant. Among them are lymphoepithelial lesions, rare lesions of the salivary glands and especially of the parotid gland that are characterized by lymphocytic infiltration associated with an epithelial proliferation. They are divided into benign, which

Parotid Metastases from Head-Neck Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Prognostic Stratification.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (cSCC) of the head and neck district are among the most common non melanocytic malignant skin carcinomas. The proposal to differentiate, within the N stage, parotid metastases from lateral cervical metastases, originates from the different prognostic value of the metastatic region involved. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 61 patients, surgically treated for parotid metastases from cSCC between January 2002 and June 2023, in four Departments of Surgery, to assess the geographic distribution of parotid metastases and to describe th

Connective tissue growth factor in indomethacin-induced rat gastric ulcer.

UNLABELLED: Parotid gland tumors account for 1-3% of head and neck tumors and approximately 70-80% of all salivary gland neoplasms, most of which are benign and predominantly occur in adults. However, non-neoplastic parotid lesions, such as chronic granulomatous sialadenitis, are rare entities with an estimated incidence of 1.7%. They may present as slow-growing, painless masses that are clinically indistinguishable from benign tumors, representing a diagnostic challenge. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a patient with a left parotid mass of two years' evolution, initially evaluated by fine

Schwannoma of vagus nerve masquerading as a parotid tumour.

A post-auricular swelling is the most common presentation of a parotid tumour, the majority of which are benign neoplasms like pleomorphic adenoma. This case report discusses a post-styloid parapharyngeal space tumour presenting as a post-auricular mass which, on initial clinical and cytological examination, was diagnosed as pleomorphic adenoma. A cross-sectional radiological examination revealed the true location of the mass, which was histopathologically confirmed to be a vagal schwannoma. A radiological differential diagnosis is also discussed.

[The pathology of salivary glands. Tumors of the salivary glands].

The management of benign and malignant neoplasms of the salivary glands requires precise knowledge of tumor histogenesis and classification as well as surgical skills. Pleomorphic adenoma and Whartin's tumor are the most frequent tumors in parotid glands while the probability for malignant tumors is higher in other glands, especially in sublingual and minor salivary glands. Those malignant salivary glands tumors are rare and necessitate multidisciplinar staging and management in close collaboration with the pathologist and the radiation oncologist.
