Lipoma of the deep lobe of the parotid gland: report of 3 cases.

Since lipomas are common soft-tissue neoplasms in other regions of the body, they are found only rarely in the parotid gland and are, therefore, often not considered in the initial differential diagnosis of parotid gland tumours. Even rarer are lipomas arising in the deep lobe of the parotid gland with only 6 cases presented in the literature. Lipomas originating in the parapharyngeal space are also extremely rare. When there is any suspicion, computed tomography and especially magnetic resonance imaging are of high diagnostic value. Fine-needle aspiration cytology seems not to contribute much

Hydatid Cyst of Parotid Gland: An Unusual Case Diagnosed by Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy.

Hydatid disease is a zoonotic disease caused by the parasite Echinococcus granulosus. This infection frequently infects the liver and the lung and even in endemic regions rarely occurs in the head and neck region. This is also true for the parotid gland. The diagnosis relies on imaging techniques and the medical history. Another method that is helpful in the diagnosis is serological tests. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy is usually not recommended due to the potential risk of anaphylactic shock or spreading of daughter cysts. The preferred treatment method of hydatid cysts in the salivary gland

Synchronous Ipsilateral Pleomorphic Adenomas of Parotid and Submandibular Glands: An Unusual Finding.

A rare case of synchronous ipsilateral pleomorphic adenomas (PA) of the left parotid and submandibular glands is reported. Simultaneous multiple PA in major salivary glands are a very rare entity, and merely few cases of ipsilateral synchronous PA involving parotid and submandibular glands are reported in the literature. The case of a 40-year-old female with a six-year history of asymptomatic growing lesion in both left parotid and left submandibular regions is presented. Left superficial parotidectomy and left submandibular gland excision at the same surgery have been performed. The aim of th

Parotid lymphangioma associated with facial nerve paralysis.

Parotid lymphangioma is a relatively rare disease that is usually detected in infancy or early childhood, and which has typical features. Clinical reports of facial nerve paralysis caused by lymphangioma, however, are very rare. Usually, facial nerve paralysis in a child suggests malignancy. Here we report a very rare case of parotid lymphangioma associated with facial nerve paralysis. A 7-year-old boy was admitted to hospital with a rapidly enlarging mass in the left parotid region. Left peripheral-type facial nerve paralysis was also noted. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging …

Unusual locations of lipoma: differential diagnosis of head and neck mass.

BACKGROUND: Lipomas are the most common benign neoplasm of mesenchymal origin and may arise in any location where fat is normally present. In the head and neck region, where only 13% of lipomas are seen, the posterior neck space is the most common site. OBJECTIVE: This article describes two cases of lipoma that were unusually located in the parotid gland and in the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM). DISCUSSION: Intraglandular lipoma of the parotid gland should be included as a rare possibility in the differential diagnosis of tumours involving the parotid gland. The extent of surgery should b

Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma of the parotid gland: a rare pediatric case.

BACKGROUND: Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma, or malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) of the head and neck is an uncommon malignancy that is exceedingly rare in the pediatric population. Although MFH was once considered the most common soft tissue sarcoma in adults, recently authors have questioned its existence as a distinct pathologic entity. METHODS: In light of this debate, we present a case of MFH with giant cells involving the parotid gland, and we review its pathology. RESULTS: We describe a 6-year-old male with parotid gland MFH. Diagnosis was fraught with difficulty, typical of

Gas-forming parotid abscess in a diabetic patient: an unusual complication of Salmonella enteritidis bacteremia.

Parotid abscess, not only a focal infection but also a sequela of systemic infection, necessitates the detailed search for the underlying pathogens. A 76-year-old diabetic male visited the emergency room of a hospital because of intermittently low-grade fever and a painful lump in the right parotid gland region for 7 days. Progressive painful swelling of the gland with the signs of severe sepsis developed 3 days later. Computed tomography of the neck revealed a cavitary lesion with an air-fluid level in the right parotid space. Superficial parotidectomy was performed. Salmonella enteritidis wa

Temporomandibular juxtaarticular chondroma: case report.

Chondromas are benign tumours composed of mature hyaline cartilage. We present here the first case in the English language medical literature of juxtaarticular chondroma of the temporomandibular joint in the parotid region. Within the rarity of cartilage disorders of the temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ), this particular condition is a diagnostic curiosity. The patient, a 54 year old woman, presented a right preauricular tumour of 3.5 cm. which had been developing for 4 years. It was not painful but there was a recent symptomology of TMJ dysfunction, with pain and clicks. The diagnostic possibili…

Solitary fibrous tumor of parotid gland: a case report and short review of literature.

OBJECTIVE: This case report represents a solitary fibrous tumor, which is a very rare neoplasm in the parotid gland. CASE PRESENTATION: 80-year-old Caucasian female patient with palpable, immobile, painless, slow growing, semi-rigid-elastic neoplasm in the left parotid gland, that was existing for four months. There were no signs of inflammation and facial paralysis. The tumor was initially interpreted as a salivary gland neoplasm of uncertain origin. Fine needle aspiration was performed 2 times; however, the precise diagnosis was challenging. The tumor was excised, regional lymphadenectomy w

Pneumoparotid related to obstructive sleep apnea syndrome treated by oral appliance with anterior opening to reduce intraoral pressure.

Pneumoparotid is associated with retrograde air insufflation in Stensen's duct and the parotid gland. A 57-year-old man experienced swelling and pain in the right parotid region after sleeping during a flight. Pneumoparotid and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome were diagnosed. Pneumoparotid was suspected as caused by increased intraoral pressure during sleep; thus, an oral appliance to reduce intraoral pressure was effective. After 9 years, the symptoms recurred on the left side. The appliance was reinserted and helped substantially. This is the first case report of obstructive sleep apnea synd…

Bilateral Submandibular Gland Aplasia: An Unusual Cause of Sublingual Swelling-The Role of Imaging in Patient Management.

There are very limited reports of aplasia of bilateral submandibular glands. We report the case of a 55-year-old male who presented with nontender palpable sublingual masses. On computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, bilateral submandibular gland aplasia and compensatory hypertrophy of bilateral parotid and sublingual glands were seen with herniation of hypertrophied sublingual glands through the bilateral mylohyoid muscles presenting as palpable sublingual region masses. Additional finding of bilateral accessory parotid glands was also noted. Prolapsed hypertrophied sublingual gl

Arteriovenal Malformation in Parotid Gland.

Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is an abnormal vascular formation where the artery and vein are connected directly to each other without capillary connections. Although it is common in the head and neck region, AVMs located in the parotid gland are quite rare. A 12-year-old female patient presented to our clinic with a mass in her left cheek area. As a result of physical examinations and tests, she was diagnosed with an AVM limited to the left parotid gland superficial lobe. Clinical follow-up was performed for AVM which has no sign except for prominence with Valsalva and surface temperature

A selective IgA deficiency in a boy who presented recurrent parotitis.

Recurrent parotitis is a non-obstructive, non-suppurative inflammatory disease which is characterized by unilateral or bilateral parotid gland swelling attacks. It is also known as juvenile recurrent parotitis. Although the etiology is unknown, congenital malformations of the ductus, genetic predisposition, infections, allergies, autoimmune diseases, and some immune deficiencies are blamed. Here, we present a case report of recurrent parotitis with selective immunoglobulin A deficiency in a six-year-old boy. The patient was presented to us with a new episode of swelling of left parotid region.…

First-bite syndrome complicating carotid endarterectomy: a case report and literature review.

First-bite syndrome (FBS) is an infrequently encountered complication of parapharyngeal space surgery. Patients experience excruciating pain in the ipsiltateral parotid gland region at the first bite of each meal, which improves with subsequent mastication. This is thought to be due to parotid gland sympathetic denervation from surgery with resultant hypersensitivity to parasympathetic impulses. There is no consensus on best treatment for FBS although symptoms tend to improve with time. There are only 2 case reports linking carotid endarterectomy and FBS so far. We report the third case of FBS

Intravenous pyogenic granuloma mimicking pleomorphic adenoma in a fine needle aspirate. A case report.

BACKGROUND: Intravenous pyogenic granuloma (IvPG) is a rare, benign lesion occurring usually as a subcutaneous mass in the neck or upper extremity. The cytologic features of IvPG have not been described before. CASE: A patient presented with a subcutaneous nodule on the lower border of the left parotid area. The clinical diagnosis was bronchial cleft cyst or lymphadenitis, and the fine needle aspiration diagnosis was pleomorphic adenoma. The tissue section, however, disclosed IvPG. CONCLUSION: Evaluation of subcutaneous nodules presenting cytologically as spindle cell lesions may be problema

Parotid duct injuries.

Treatment of parotid duct injuries varies with the anatomic location and the type of injury involved. The duct may be injured by sharp or blunt facial trauma. Moderate to severe facial swelling or clear drainage shortly after injury in the region of the parotid gland or its duct should alert the clinician to this potential problem. The anatomic considerations, as well as a variety of techniques to treat these injuries, are presented. A case involving a particularly resistant chronic ductal injury, with an extraoral fistula and its eventual cure, is presented. A second case of a lacerated duct
