Over a 10-y period, patients hospitalized with Pasteurella-induced cat or dog bite-associated wound infection were analysed retrospectively with regard to preceding antibiotic medication. In 10/14 cases, hospitalization was necessitated in spite of prophylactic or therapeutic administration of oral antibiotics. In 1 case, phenoxymethylpenicillin and flucloxacillin had been prescribed. The other patients received flucloxacillin (7 patients), erythromycin, or cefadroxil (1 patient each), agents that are not consistently active against Pasteurella. In conclusion, hospitalization due to Pasteurell

A naturally avirulent isolant of Pasteurella multocida (Heddleston sero-type 3) was investigated as a seed strain for the development of a live vaccine against turkey pasteurellosis. Laboratory trials showed that when given in aerosol form at a dosage of 5 x 10(8) c.f.u. per m(2), of barn floor, the vaccine produced satisfactory protection against both homologous and heterologous serotypes challenge administered by aerosol. Likewise, turkeys vaccinated once, twice or three times, and challenged at various time intervals were protected for over 20 weeks. The vaccine strain could be recovered fr…

Pasteurella multocida serotype D is a major pathogen responsible for severe respiratory disease in swine, resulting in substantial economic losses worldwide. The increasing prevalence of antimicrobial resistance highlights the urgent need for alternative control strategies. In this study, we report the isolation and comprehensive characterization of a novel, strictly lytic phage, PGG01, that specifically infects P. multocida serotype D. Phage PGG01 is stable over a pH range of 5-9 and at temperatures up to 50 °C, reflecting conditions relevant to swine production environments. Host-range analy…

Pasteurella multocida (Pm) is an important zoonotic respiratory pathogen, especially serotype A, which can cause death in various hosts, including humans, farm animals, and wildlife. However, the exact mechanisms by which hosts mobilize the immune system against Pasteurella multocida serotype A (PmA) in mammals remain largely unexplored. In the present study, we found that the control of lung infection is critical for PmA infection. Furthermore, unbiased RNA sequencing analysis and histopathological studies revealed that T-cell associated immunity was not fully activated during PmA infection, …

Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida), a pathogenic bacterium known to induce duck cholera, stands as a significant contributor to bacterial diseases afflicting the duck industry, causing substantial annual economic losses on a global scale. In this study, the genes encoding the lipoproteins PlpE of P. multocida strain PMWSG-4 was cloned, inserted into the pBAD-ClyA vector, and the recombinant outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) fused with PlpE antigen of P. multocida was expressed by Escherichia coli (E. coli). Ducks immunized with OMV-PlpE had significantly (P < 0.001) increased production of anti…

Pasteurella multocida is a gram-negative coccobacillus bacterium found as a commensal in the oropharynx of domestic animals such as cats and dogs and some farm animals. Soft tissue infections and occasionally bacteremia in immunocompromised patients with direct contact with animals are described. We report a 61 year old male with a history of scratches and close contact with domestic cats, with a septic shock originating from a pulmonary focus, requiring mechanical ventilation and vasopressors. Blood cultures disclosed the presence of Pasteurella multocida. He responded successfully to antimic…

Pasteurella is a gram-negative coccobacillus that is commonly transmitted through cat and dog bites and causes various diseases in humans. In the present case, kissing an animal caused Pasteurella multocida infection, leading to sepsis and cardiogenic shock. We used venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) to support the cardiovascular system until recovery. A 62-year-old man with no relevant history was referred to our hospital with a 1-day history of sore throat and fever. He was diagnosed with cervical cellulitis and later developed septic shock, which necessitated catecho…

Swine pasteurellosis is one of the most economically important diseases of pig caused by Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) capsular types A and D. These organisms are commensals and opportunistic pathogens in the upper respiratory tract in pig. In the present study, we extracted whole outer membrane proteins (OMP) from P. multocida capsular types A and D and were mixed together in the ratio of 1:1 forming bivalent outer-membrane proteins. The bivalent OMP was adsorbed onto aluminum hydroxide nanoparticles. The size of aluminum hydroxide nanoparticles adsorbed outer membrane protein was foun…

The potent mitogenic toxin from Pasteurella multocida (PMT) is the major virulence factor associated with a number of epizootic and zoonotic diseases caused by infection with this respiratory pathogen. PMT is a glutamine-specific protein deamidase that acts on its intracellular G-protein targets to increase intracellular calcium, cytoskeletal, and mitogenic signaling. PMT enters cells through receptor-mediated endocytosis and then translocates into the cytosol through a pH-dependent process that is inhibited by NH(4)Cl or bafilomycin A1. However, the detailed mechanisms that govern cellular en…

Duck cholera (duck hemorrhagic septicemia) is a highly contagious disease caused by Pasteurella multocida, and is one of the major bacterial diseases currently affecting the duck industry. Type A is the predominant pathogenic serotype. In this study, the genes encoding the lipoproteins VacJ, PlpE, and the outer membrane protein OmpH of P. multocida strain PMWSG-4 were cloned and expressed as proteins in E. coli. The recombinant VacJ (84.4 kDa), PlpE (94.8 kDa), and OmpH (96.7 kDa) proteins were purified, and subunit vaccines were formulated with a single water-in-oil adjuvant, while killed vac…

UNLABELLED: Interaction between viruses and bacteria during the development of infectious diseases is a complex question that requires continuous study. In this study, we explored the interactions between pseudorabies virus (PRV) and Pasteurella multocida (PM), which are recognized as the primary and secondary agents of porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC), respectively. In vivo tests using mouse models demonstrated that intranasal inoculation with PRV at a sublethal dose induced disruption of murine respiratory barrier and promoted the invasion and damages caused by PM through respirato…

In Italy, the use of autogenous inactivated vaccines prepared with the bacterial strains isolated from affected animals is authorized by the Ministry of Health in farms where bacterial diseases occur frequently. The autogenous vaccine performed using Pasteurella multocida is frequently used in rabbit farms, but the feedback of its application is not available. Therefore, the aim of this study is to give information about the impact on the clinical signs of a bivalent autogenous vaccine in rabbits of a genetic centre. The vaccine was prepared using two P. multocida strains belonging to serogrou…

Here, we showed our clinicopathological findings of infected aortic aneurysm (IAA) with Pasteurella multocida, which is a Gram-negative coccobacillus and is part of the normal oral flora of many animals. The patient was a 76-year-old male animal owner with a history of diabetes mellitus, alcoholic liver damage, and laryngeal cancer. He died 16 days after admission without undergoing operation because of poor general condition. Autopsy showed saccular outpouching with loss of the existing aortic wall and marked neutrophilic infiltration in the suprarenal abdominal aorta. Rupture was not evident…
