BACKGROUND: There is a need of well-powered randomized clinical trials in fibromyalgia. However, challenges for recruitment are presented. This study aims to describe and assess the perception of barriers and facilitators and the associated factors for the participation of underrepresented and non-underrepresented fibromyalgia patients.
METHODS: We performed an online survey through REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) targeting fibromyalgia patients from April 7 to July 3, 2020 during the COVID-19 stay home mandate and it was restricted to the United States of America. We described and

BACKGROUND: Although Ethiopia eliminated leprosy as public health problem 20 years ago, still more than 3000 new cases are reported annually. Leprosy related disability affects patients' day to day physical activities and their participation in social activities. Assessing the degree of activity limitation and social participation is recommended to show disability and assess the efficacy of rehabilitation efforts.
METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDING: A hospital based cross sectional study was conducted among a total of 305 leprosy patients. Data were collected by face to face interview using Sc

OBJECTIVE: Schizophrenia has recently been associated with widespread white matter microstructural abnormalities, but the functional effects of these abnormalities remain unclear. Widespread heterogeneity of results from studies published to date preclude any definitive characterization of the relationship between white matter and cognitive performance in schizophrenia. Given the relevance of deficits in cognitive function to predicting social and functional outcomes in schizophrenia, the authors carried out a meta-analysis of available data through the ENIGMA Consortium, using a common analys

Healthcare professionals involved in the treatment and care of patients with intractable diseases, such as muscular dystrophy, increasingly encounter situations that can elicit emotional distress for them as well as the patients. Therefore, medical professionals also need support. This article describes a psychological case conference of multidisciplinary professionals involved in the treatment of a deceased patient with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The conference aimed to support medical professionals in reflecting on and sharing their thoughts, feelings, and conflicts. Such a practice could

Iron overload due to red blood cell (RBC) transfusions is associated with morbidity and mortality in lower-risk myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) patients. Many studies have suggested improved survival after iron chelation therapy (ICT), but valid data are limited. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of ICT on overall survival and hematologic improvement in lower-risk MDS patients in the European MDS registry. We compared chelated patients with a contemporary, non-chelated control group within the European MDS registry, that met the eligibility criteria for starting iron chelation. A C

BACKGROUND: Recent demographic changes have led to a large population of older adults, many of whom experience degenerative disc diseases. Degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis (DLSS) is associated with considerable discomfort and limitations in activities of daily living (ADL). Symptomatic DLSS is one of the most frequent indications for spinal surgery. The aim of this study was to identify sociodemographic variables, morphological markers, depression as well as fear of movement that predict ADL performance and participation in social life in patients with DLSS.
METHODS: Sixty-seven patients w

Pretherapy patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) from US Intergroup trial E2997 were analyzed with single nucleotide polymorphism microarrays to detect acquired chromosomal anomalies. The four CLL-typical anomalies (11q-, +12, 13q-, and 17p-) were found at expected frequencies. Acquired anomalies in other regions account for 70% of the total detected anomalies, and their number per participant has a significant effect on progression-free survival after adjusting for the effects of 17p- (and other covariates). These results were compared with those from a previous study of more than

While the majority of cases of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in developed countries occur among illicit drug users, HCV antiviral treatment uptake is poor in this population. Several studies have shown that patients can successfully be treated for HCV in the context of methadone maintenance programmes, but little evidence exists evaluating HCV treatment models for substance users where methadone maintenance is not indicated. This retrospective cohort study involved 129 persons participating in psycho-educational support groups and integrated, interprofessional, community-based health services focuse

AIM: Eligibility of patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) for exercise therapy is the most important requirement for predicting their training group adherence.
METHODS: In this prospective, exploratory study over a period of 1 year, a total of 462 PAD patients of an angiological outpatient routine care setting were consecutively recruited to the study. As non-eligibility criteria for exercise therapy were defined: resting pain or gangrene (Fontaine stage III and IV PAD), the inability to complete treadmill exercise, or premature treadmill discontinuation due to non-vascular walking

UNLABELLED: Lyme borreliosis is a chronic infectious disease caused by Borrelia burgdorferi spirochete. The excess and inadequate inflammatory response and even autoimmunity is considered to participate in its pathogenesis. Apoptosis (programmed cell death) of activated lymphocytes contributes to regulation of immunological response and terminating the inflammation.
AIM OF THE STUDY: To evaluate concentrations of soluble factors participating in regulation of apoptosis in the supernatants of the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of patients with chronic Lyme borreliosis.

There are sporadic instances of patients with the motor function disturbance of non-cardiac origin after cardiac surgery, and these patients may need prolonged post-operative cardiac rehabilitation. We established our cardiac rehabilitation program for post-operative patients and a total of 124 patients underwent the post-operative cardiac rehabilitation program (male 73, female 51, average age 60). Among them, 12 patients (9.7%) received the physical therapy for the disturbance of motor function post-operatively. These 12 patients were retrospectively studied. Physical therapies performed wer

Treatment outcomes in eating disorders (EDs) are still an open field for clinicians and researchers. Besides difficulties in egosyntonic-linked treatment engagements, dropout is one of the most crucial elements that cause a reduction in the treatment efficacy. Thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate factors that could contribute to high dropout rates and non-participation in follow-up evaluation in patients with ED. This study used a large sample of patients from a specialized ED ward and day hospital (DH). A sample of 428 individuals was recruited for this study. Psychological and demograp
