OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to evaluate the long-term results of vein bypass grafts for axillary artery occlusion, specifically those placed extra-anatomically to prevent arterial injury in pitchers.
METHODS: With the greater saphenous veins used as the selected conduit, arterial bypass grafts were routed anterior to the pectoralis minor muscle in four baseball pitchers who had occlusion of the axillary artery. We performed a follow-up in excess of 10 years with evaluations of the bypass grafts by ultrasonic duplex scan and magnetic resonance angiography.
RESULTS: All four pitchers treated in th

Upper airway obstruction in primary or recurrent carcinomas of the head and neck extending into the mediastinum may demand surgical intervention despite severe technical difficulties in patients with tumors previously considered inoperable. In fact, many of these tumors may be operable and some perhaps curable. A technique has been developed based in part on our experience with previously described procedures. A preliminary sternal split is used to demonstrate the extent of the mediastinal involvement as well as to provide enhanced exposure and proximal control of the great vessels. The pector

Sternalis is an anomalous muscle found occasionally in the anterior part of the thorax. During routine dissection sternalis muscle was found in a male cadaver. This rare anatomic variant is reported in 8% of the population. In the present case, the muscle was found bilaterally, placed obliquely on either side of the sternum. It originated by tendinous fibres from the lower costal cartilages and inserted to the manubriosternal junction. The right side muscle was well developed whereas the left one was reduced in size. The pectoralis major and minor were normal. The knowledge of sternalis is imp

We report a case of 32-year-old man with progressive, asymmetric, proximal weakness of both upper limbs for 14 months. On examination, he had gynecomastia and wasting and weakness of his deltoid, supraspinatus, infraspinatus, pectoralis, biceps, and triceps muscles, along with sensory loss of his left C5-C8 dermatomes. Deep tendon reflexes were depressed in the upper limbs and normal in the lower limbs. There was a history of a road traffic accident 2 years ago without any neurologic deficits. We discuss the clinical approach, differential diagnosis, investigations, and treatment options for b

Metastatic breast cancer is commonly found in the pectoralis major and minor muscles, ribs, spine, pelvis, long bones of the extremities, liver, lung, and the brain. It is unusual to see breast cancer metastases to distal skeletal muscle. We report a case of a patient with a history of stage IIA infiltrating lobular carcinoma of the right breast presenting with a metastatic lesion in the right adductor magnus. She was treated four years prior to the onset of the metastases with a modified radical mastectomy but refused postoperative chemotherapy or adjunctive radiation.

Vascular lesions in the chest wall muscles are extremely rare and can cause diagnostic difficulties on screening mammograms. We describe a case of venous malformation of the pectoralis muscle, diagnosed during routine screening, in a 60-year-old woman. The mammograms showed a mass over the chest wall, projecting in the breast parenchyma. The ultrasound was not diagnostic. The definite diagnosis was made using MRI, and to our knowledge, only 1 similar case has been reported so far, but this is the only asymptomatic case depicted during screening services.

A 22-year-old man was admitted with a rapidly enlarging soft mass on the left chest wall, which was diagnosed as lipoma by postoperative pathology. A chest roentgenogram revealed a defect of the fourth rib, scoliosis, dextrocardia, and diaphragmatic hernia. A computed tomographic scan showed maldevelopment of the pectoralis major and minor muscles. This is the first reported case of Poland syndrome with ipsilateral lipoma of the chest wall. Dextrocardia associated with Poland syndrome may be considered dextroposition, rather than a dextroinversion, and it may arise as a result of Poland syndro

From November 1988 to July 1992 eight patients with painful, chronic, disabling winging of the scapula caused by isolated serratus anterior paralysis had pectoralis major muscle transfer extended by a fascia lata graft. Six men and two women were treated. Duration of symptoms ranged from 12 to 35 months. Seven patients had a positive result on electromyography. In addition, four patients had multidirectional instability of the shoulder on the side of the winging. The postoperative follow-up period ranged from 12 to 57 months (average 27.1 months). Excellent results were obtained in all patient

Neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome (NTOS) represents a disorder believed to involve compression of one or more neurovascular elements as they exit the thoracic outlet. This comprehensive literature review will focus on the occurrence, classification, etiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic measures, and both nonoperative and operative therapies for NTOS. NTOS represents the most common subtype of thoracic outlet syndrome and can significantly impair quality of life. Botulinum toxin injection into the anterior scalene muscle, or even the middle scalene or pectoralis minor muscles, can redu

The thoracic outlet is the space between the thorax and axilla through which the subclavian vein, subclavian artery, and brachial plexus travel from their central origins to their peripheral termini. Its bounds include the clavicle, first thoracic rib, insertion of the pectoralis minor muscle onto the coracoid process of the humerus, and the sternum. It contains three areas: the scalene triangle, the costoclavicular space, and the subcoracoid or pectoralis minor space. Aberrant anatomy is common in the thoracic outlet and may predispose patients to compression of the neurovascular bundle and d

In this past few years myocutaneous (MC) flaps have, to a large extent, replaced other flaps. Because of axial blood supply, they may be used without delay. The MC flaps, useful in head and neck reconstruction, are based on the latissimus dorsi, the pectoralis major, the sternomastoid, and the trapezius. All have discrete independent vasculature that acts as a pedicle for the muscle and skin flap. The sternomastoid MC flaps have limited range and only special areas of usefulness. The latissimus dorsi flap, because it requires special positioning of the patient, has not been as popular as the p

PURPOSE: To evaluate the lower motor neuron (LMN) integrity of upper extremity muscles of persons with high tetraplegia (C1-C4) in order to determine muscles available for stimulation.
METHODS: Fourteen subjects (23 arms) were evaluated for LMN integrity. Muscles that elicited a functional response (grade 3 or better) to surface electrical stimulation were considered to have intact LMN and good candidates for FES. Strength-duration (S-D) curves were generated on muscles that showed weak (less than grade 3) or no response to surface stimulation. Muscles were considered denervated if S-D curves

BACKGROUND: The endoscopic approach is a technical innovation for release of the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) fibrosis in muscular torticollis, where operation scars can be hidden at less conspicuous areas, for example, at the axilla and hair-bearing scalp. As the SCM muscle is located beneath the investing layer of deep cervical fascia which is reported to continue to the fascia of the pectoralis major, the aim of the study was to describe and evaluate the preliminary result of transaxillary subfascial approach for persistent muscular torticollis in children.
METHODS: A total of 4 children (2 b

INTRODUCTION: Median sternotomy is the most commonly used approach in open cardiac surgery. As in any other surgery, surgical site infections are a known phenomenon, but morbidity depends on the depth of infection. Superficial wound infections can be managed conservatively; however, deep sternal wound infections need an aggressive approach to prevent disastrous consequence like mediastinitis. Hence, this study was conducted with the aim to classify sternotomy wound infection and to develop a treatment algorithm for superficial and deep sternotomy wound infections.

A new era in head and neck reconstruction has been opened with the use of myocutaneous flaps. The pectoralis major myocutaneous flap is considered the most reliable of its kind but flap failures still occur secondary to tension and infection. Our standard procedure has been to follow the acromioxiphoid line as a guide to the location of the blood supply of the pectoralis major muscle. We have noticed in the operating room and during cadaver dissection that the vascular supply is sometimes more laterally located than usually described. A review of the vascular supply of this anatomic area using

Tracking movement in the scapular plane and electromyograms from the upper trapezius, rhomboideus, middle deltoideus, and pectoralis major muscles were analyzed during the movement in ten subjects who had grade II dislocation of the acromioclavicular joint. The purpose of this study was to clarify whether or not the dislocation of the acromioclavicular joint affects the rhythmic movement of the shoulder joint, and to evaluate objectively fatigue on the shoulder girdle of the dislocated side. The dislocation of acromioclavicular joint affects the fast rhythmic movement of the shoulder joint fro

BACKGROUND: Muscle synergies are defined as the central nervous system's organizational structure for movement. Muscle synergies change after muscular fatigue, with certain synergies assuming the primary role to compensate for fatigue within another muscle synergy. Owing to the high eccentric forces imposed upon the external rotators (ie, posterior rotator cuff), pitchers that continue to throw while fatigued are at a significantly higher risk of shoulder and/or elbow injury; however, the neuromuscular compensation strategies of baseball players in response to fatigue are currently unknown.

PURPOSE: 99mTc-pyrophosphate (99mTc-PYP) uptake in the skeletal muscles is minimal in patients with transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR-CA) when assessed qualitatively and quantitatively. We previously demonstrated moderate- to high-grade 99mTc-PYP uptake in the subcutaneous abdominal fat of some patients with ATTR-CA and showed that this abnormal finding could reflect the regional amyloid burden of this tissue. We aimed to investigate the frequency of 99mTc-PYP uptake in skeletal trunk muscles of patients with ATTR-CA.
METHODS: Chest- and abdomen-centered 99mTc-PYP scintigraphy images we

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Over the last decades, the poultry industry has experienced steady growth. Although the industry is gradually expanding in Indonesia, poultry feed production has always been expensive. There is a need to study alternative ingredients to obtain affordable feed from natural resources. Chaetomorpha linum (CL) is an abundant macroalgae available throughout the year in Indonesia. This study aimed to determine the effect of CL on the histological structure of the small intestine, pectoralis muscle, growth performance, and meat quality of broilers.

The anterior arm compartment includes the biceps brachii muscle, brachialis muscle, and coracobrachialis muscle, and they are characterized by different morphological variations. During standard anatomical dissection of right upper limb, an variant muscle was found. It originated from the fascia covering the long head of biceps brachii and from the tendon of pectoralis major muscle. It also connected to the brachial fascia. It also demonstrated a long thin tendon which was distally attached to the medial epicondyle of humerus. Knowledge about the morphological variations in this region is clin
