Social anxiety and anger identification: bubbles reveal differential use of facial information with low spatial frequencies.

We investigated the facial information that socially anxious and nonanxious individuals utilize to judge emotions. Using a reversed-correlation technique, we presented participants with face images that were masked with random bubble patterns. These patterns determined which parts of the face were visible in specific spatial-frequency bands. This masking allowed us to establish which locations and spatial frequencies were helping participants to successfully discriminate angry faces from neutral ones. Although socially anxious individuals performed as well as nonanxious individuals on the emot

An event-related potential investigation of the time-course of temporal ventriloquism.

Temporal ventriloquism refers to the phenomenon that a sound presented in close temporal proximity of a visual stimulus attracts its perceived temporal occurrence. Here, we investigate the time-course of the neuronal processes underlying temporal ventriloquism, using event-related brain potentials. To measure shifts in perceived temporal visual occurrence, we used a paradigm in which a sound modulates the magnitude of a visual illusion called the flash-lag effect. A sound presented before the flash reduced both the size of the flash-lag effect and the amplitude of visual N1 compared with when

Modeling temporal and compressive properties of the normal and impaired auditory system.

Three modifications of a psychoacoustically and physiologically motivated processing model [Dau et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 102 (1997a) 2892-2905] are presented and tested. The modifications aim at simulating sensorineural hearing loss and incorporate a level-dependent peripheral compression whose properties are affected by hearing impairment. Model 1 realizes this difference by introducing for impaired listeners an instantaneous level-dependent expansion prior to the adaptation stage of the model. Model 2 and Model 3 realize a level-dependent compression with time constants of 5 and 15 ms, re

A new procedure for measuring peripheral compression in normal-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners.

Forward-masking growth functions for on-frequency (6-kHz) and off-frequency (3-kHz) sinusoidal maskers were measured in quiet and in a high-pass noise just above the 6-kHz probe frequency. The data show that estimates of response-growth rates obtained from those functions in quiet, which have been used to infer cochlear compression, are strongly dependent on the spread of probe excitation toward higher frequency regions. Therefore, an alternative procedure for measuring response-growth rates was proposed, one that employs a fixed low-level probe and avoids level-dependent spread of probe excit

Effects of aspirin on psychophysical measures of frequency selectivity, two-tone suppression, and growth of masking.

Three psychophysical measures of nonlinearity were evaluated before and during a course of aspirin ingestion to investigate the role of outer hair cells (OHCs) in these measures, as aspirin is thought to alter the functioning of OHCs. Six normal-hearing individuals received a moderate dose (3.9 g/day) of aspirin for four days, producing essentially flat, temporary hearing losses that ranged from 5-20 dB. The losses were about 2 dB greater for a 300-ms signal than for a 15-ms signal, indicating reduced temporal integration with aspirin. On the final three days of aspirin use, three experiments

Effect of masker level on overshoot in running- and frozen-noise maskers.

Masked thresholds were measured with running- and frozen-noise maskers. The 5-kHz signal was 2 ms in duration. The masker was low-pass noise (20 Hz-10 kHz); its total duration was 300 ms. The overall level of the masker was 30, 50, or 70 dB SPL. The onset of the signal was delayed by 0, 3, 8, 18, 198, or 278 ms relative to the onset of the masker. In all frozen-noise measurements, the signal was added to the same fine structure of the noise. Overshoot in frozen noise was measured for two starting phases of the signal that led to a 10-dB difference for large signal-onset delays. In all three co

Effects of signal processing on intelligibility of speech in noise for persons with sensorineural hearing loss.

A person with sensorineural hearing loss accompanied by recruitment has difficulty in understanding amplified speech, especially when speech is in the presence o competition. Two groups of subjects with sensorineural hearing loss with recruitment were tested at +6 and at O dB signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio at preferred levels for unprocessed speech and for speech processed through a two-band compression/equalization of circuit. In addition, unprocessed key word identification scores were compared to those from use of a hearing aid and of a one-band compression/equalization circuit. Processing a t

[Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) in chronic noise-induced hearing loss--recommendations for expert assessment].

The German guidelines for evaluation of chronic noise-induced hearing loss (NHL) require two special auditory tests besides pure tone and speech audiometry tests as proof of damage to the organum spirale. This requirement is the subject of controversy because of the subjective nature of the tests as well as the secondary ascending degeneration of neurons in cases of long-term NIHL. The application of otoacoustic emissions (OAE) could be a new starting point, independent of recruitment. DPOAE are preferable to TEOAE because they are frequency specific. For this reason, we carried out measuremen

Psychoacoustically guided midfrequency band-limiting improves the diagnostic utility of classical acoustic measures in dysphonia.

Human hearing is most sensitive around 3 kHz, where small changes in harmonic structure and noise are particularly noticeable. However, traditional or standard acoustic measures of dysphonia—jitter, shimmer, harmonics-to-noise ratio, and cepstral peak prominence smoothed—are usually calculated from full-band signals and do not account for this psychoacoustic weighting. Consequently, their diagnostic accuracy is often reduced in connected speech and cases of mild dysphonia, which are common clinical presentations. We tested a simple, low-cost preprocessing strategy that limited analysis to the

The spatial area of the normalization pool in early visual processing.

IMPORTANCE: The risk of mental disorders is consistently associated with variants in CACNA1C (L-type calcium channel Cav1.2) but it is not known why these channels are critical to cognition, and whether they affect the layer III pyramidal cells in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex that are especially vulnerable in cognitive disorders. OBJECTIVE: To examine the molecular mechanisms expressed in layer III pyramidal cells in primate dorsolateral prefrontal cortices. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The design included transcriptomic analyses from human and macaque dorsolateral prefrontal cor

Effects of speaker and listener sex on auditory attention decoding performance.

OBJECTIVES: Auditory Attention Decoding (AAD) is a technique utilizing brain signals to decode on which sound the listener focuses the attention. In most current studies, the effect of type of speech materials used and sex of the listener is not considered. We investigated the effect on AAD performance of factors related to the speaker (such as the sex of the speaker, background noise level, and same versus mixed-sex conditions) and the listener (sex of the listener). DESIGN: Forty-two young adults with normal hearing participated in the study. They listened to 2 competing speakers and were i

Impaired processing of spatiotemporal visual attention engagement deficits in Chinese children with developmental dyslexia.

Emerging evidence suggests that visuospatial attention plays an important role in reading among Chinese children with dyslexia. Additionally, numerous studies have shown that Chinese children with dyslexia have deficits in their visuospatial attention orienting; however, the visual attention engagement deficits in Chinese children with dyslexia remain unclear. Therefore, we used a visual attention masking (AM) paradigm to characterize the spatiotemporal distribution of visual attention engagement in Chinese children with dyslexia. AM refers to impaired identification of the first (S1) of two r

Derived-band auditory brainstem responses: cochlear contributions determined by narrowband maskers.

OBJECTIVE: The present study sought to determine the cochlear frequency regions represented by Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABRs) obtained using the high-pass noise/derived response (HP/DR) technique. DESIGN: Broadband noise sufficient to mask the ABR to 50 dB nHL clicks was HP filtered (96 dB/oct) at 8000, 4000, 2000, 1000 and 500 Hz. Mixed with the clicks and HP noise masker was narrowband noise. Three derived response bands, denoted by the upper and lower high-pass noise frequencies, were obtained: DR4000-2000, DR2000-1000, and DR1000-500. STUDY SAMPLE: Ten adults with normal hearing, ag

The comparison of the comodulation masking release (CMR) in individuals with and without chronic tinnitus.

In comodulation masking release (CMR), the auditory signal threshold improves when maskers far from the frequency of the target signal are coherently amplitude-modulated. Studies show that inhibitory function may play a role in CMR. In individuals who have tinnitus, decreasing inhibitory functioning in auditory central nervous system has been documented. Therefore, in this study, the purpose was to evaluate CMR in individuals suffering from tinnitus and compare CMR findings with those who do not have tinnitus. Seventeen normal-hearing individuals (without tinnitus) and 13 individuals having un

Quantification of masking risk in screening mammography with volumetric breast density maps.

PURPOSE: Fibroglandular tissue may mask breast cancers, thereby reducing the sensitivity of mammography. Here, we investigate methods for identification of women at high risk of a masked tumor, who could benefit from additional imaging. METHODS: The last negative screening mammograms of 111 women with interval cancer (IC) within 12 months after the examination and 1110 selected normal screening exams from women without cancer were used. From the mammograms, volumetric breast density maps were computed, which provide the dense tissue thickness for each pixel location. With these maps, three me
