The relation between public speaking anxiety and social anxiety: a review.

This article reviewed the literature on public speaking anxiety in the context of social phobia subtyping. In total, 18 empirical studies on subtype issues related to public speaking anxiety were analyzed. Results of the reviewed studies are discussed in relation to their research method, that is, whether it focused on qualitative or quantitative aspects of subtype differences and whether it used a clinical or community sample. Evidence supported the premise that public speaking anxiety is a distinct subtype, qualitatively and quantitatively different from other subtypes of social phobia. The

Impaired decision making in opiate addiction correlates with anxiety and self-directedness but not substance use parameters.

BACKGROUND: Despite a large number of empirical reports of impaired decision making in substance use disorders, the underlying factors contributing to such deficits remain to be elucidated. This study examined the potential influences of personality traits, affective symptoms, and pharmacological variables on decision making, as measured by the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) in a sample of opioid-dependent patients. METHODS: A total of 46 opioid-dependent patients taking part in an opiate maintenance outpatient program and 46 healthy control subjects performed the IGT. Personality traits and affect

Maternal refugee status is associated with less favourable motor performance and behaviour in term infants referred to a neonatal ward: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and depression are highly prevalent among Syrian refugees. Anxiety and depression during pregnancy may impair infant neurodevelopment. This study evaluated whether potential maternal anxiety and depression in Syrian refugee and native Turkish mothers were associated with less favourable neonatal neurodevelopment. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: Turkish (n = 64) and Syrian (n = 17) term-born infants (37-41 weeks' gestation) referred to a level II-III neonatal intensive care unit in Izmir were assessed shortly after birth (median 5 days) together with their mo

Balance dysfunction in childhood anxiety: findings and theoretical approach.

A recent special issue of the Journal of Anxiety Disorders, reviewed the experimental and clinical findings related to comorbidity of balance disorders and anxiety [J. Anxiety Disord. 15 (2001) 1.]. The studies mentioned in that issue were based mostly on adult subjects but prevalence of balance disorders in childhood anxiety is yet to be established. We have tested a small sample of children diagnosed for general or separation anxiety disorder and a control group of normal children. Extensive neurological examination revealed no clinically relevant vestibular impairment. Nevertheless, detaile

The motive to drink due to social anxiety and its relation to hazardous alcohol use.

Although studies on social anxiety and alcohol-related problems are numerous, the exact nature of the relationship remains unclear. In the present study, we investigate how the motive to drink due to social anxiety is associated with hazardous alcohol use over and above habitual alcohol use, social anxiety, and alcohol outcome expectancies. We also examine which factors define the motive to drink due to social anxiety and clarify the impact of the type of social situation. Drinking due to social anxiety, habitual alcohol use, and gender, but not social anxiety, were associated with hazardous a

Assessing academic anxiety in d/Deaf, DeafBlind, and hard of hearing individuals.

Students encounter many challenges to academic success. Whereas some students thrive in stressful environments, other students falter. Some students also encounter social and emotional factors that might detract from academic achievement, including negative emotions like stress and anxiety. Academic anxieties refer to negativity, nervousness, and avoidance associated with different academic domains, such as math anxiety, science anxiety, test anxiety, trait (general) anxiety, and writing anxiety. Not only do individuals with high academic anxiety experience stress, but high academic anxiety is

Visuospatial and mathematical dysfunction in major depressive disorder and/or panic disorder: A study of parietal functioning.

The parietal cortex is critical for several different cognitive functions, including visuospatial processing and mathematical abilities. There is strong evidence indicating parietal dysfunction in depression. However, it is less clear whether anxiety is associated with parietal dysfunction and whether comorbid depression and anxiety are associated with greater impairment. The present study compared participants with major depression (MDD), panic disorder (PD), comorbid MDD/PD and controls on neuropsychological measures of visuospatial processing, Judgement of Line Orientation (JLO), and mathem

Student-led occupational performance coaching in a university setting.

INTRODUCTION: University students are at a high risk for mental health difficulties. Occupational performance coaching is an action-oriented and strengths-based approach that can help clients set and accomplish personally valued goals. We carried out a pilot project to evaluate a tele-rehabilitation occupational performance coaching service for university students within an occupational therapy fieldwork placement. METHOD: A pretest post-test design was used. Severity of symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress and goal achievement were measured before and after the intervention and semi-st

Academic performance, study time, psychological factors, and substance use among Korean adolescents.

Substance use and mental health problems often emerge during adolescence. However, relatively few large-scale studies have examined how academic and psychological factors jointly relate to substance use among adolescents in high-pressure educational contexts. This study investigated the associations between perceived academic performance, daily study time, psychological factors (stress, anxiety, and happiness), and alcohol and tobacco use among Korean adolescents. We analyzed the cross-sectional data of 50,914 middle and high school students who participated in the 2023 Korea Youth Risk Behavi

Developmental stability of task-rest neural efficiency in youth using a threat and cognitive control task.

Behaviors arise from coordinated neural activity across diverse spatial and temporal scales. Prior work has linked better task performance and cognitive functioning to patterns of global network connectivity requiring minimal reconfiguration when switching between task demands. This metric indexing similarity in functional connectivity across task and rest has been termed "neural efficiency." Here we assess stability of neural efficiency over approximately 3 years in adolescence, specificity across two task-rest combinations and associations with anxiety. At approximately age 16 and/or 19, 95

The National Prevalence of Neurodevelopmental Disorders and Their Associations With Health Conditions Among General Junior High School Students in China: Findings From the China Education Panel Survey.

Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) remain poorly understood in adolescents, particularly in middle-income countries like China. To assess NDDs prevalence and their associations with health conditions among Chinese general junior high school students, data from the China Education Panel Survey (CEPS, 2013-2015) were used. A total of 8324 junior high school students were included. Validated questionnaires and tests assessed NDDs (autism spectrum disorder [ASD], language disorder [LD], and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder [ADHD]) and health conditions (physical health through overweight/

Abstract task sequence initiation deficit dissociates anxiety disorders from obsessive-compulsive disorder and healthy controls.

In everyday life, humans perform sequences of tasks. These tasks may be disrupted in people with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Symptoms, such as compulsions, can be considered sequential and often cause repetitions of tasks that disrupt daily living (e.g., checking the stove while cooking). Motor sequences have been used to study behavioral deficits in OCD. However, not all sequences are motor sequences. Some are more "abstract" in that they are composed of a series of tasks (e.g., chopping and stirring) rather than being dependent on individual actions or stimuli. These abstract task s

[Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Study habits].

Attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most prevalent disorders in the child-youth population, with a known impact on learning and school performance. Lack of attention, associated executive dysfunction and comorbid problems -particularly those related to learning and anxiety-, strongly determine this conceptual domain. Affected youths have more problems for taking notes, completion of homework, school programming and less motivation to study. Despite greater dedication to homework and greater use of support resources, school failure and nonachievement of curricular ob

Uncertain call likelihood negatively affects sleep and next-day cognitive performance while on-call in a laboratory environment.

On-call working arrangements are employed in a number of industries to manage unpredictable events, and often involve tasks that are safety- or time-critical. This study investigated the effects of call likelihood during an overnight on-call shift on self-reported pre-bed anxiety, sleep and next-day cognitive performance. A four-night laboratory-based protocol was employed, with an adaptation, a control and two counterbalanced on-call nights. On one on-call night, participants were instructed that they would definitely be called during the night, while on the other on-call night they were told
