Selected list of books and journals for the small medical library.

The introduction to this revised list (seventeenth version) of 610 books and 141 journals addresses the origin, three decades ago, of the "Selected List of Books and Journals for the Small Medical Library," and the accomplishments of the late Alfred N. Brandon in helping health sciences librarians, and especially hospital librarians, to envision what collection development and a library collection are all about. This list is intended as a selection guide for the small or medium-size library in a hospital or similar facility. More realistically, it can function as a core collection for a librar

Erectile dysfunction and prostate diseases are the predominant Google search terms amongst men's health topics.

Patients are becoming increasingly active consumers of health information on the internet with urologic concerns being no exception. Our objective was to explore online search trends for topics related to men's health and identify information-seeking patterns related to news and media coverage of these topics. We used Google Trends ( http://google.com/trends ) to explore search trends for various search terms related to men's health in the United States over a 5-year period. Search queries provided graphs depicting search volume as a function of time, geographical data, and related topics and

Comparison of clobetasol propionate cream plus coal tar vs. topical psoralen and solar ultraviolet A therapy in palmoplantar psoriasis.

AIM: Palmoplantar psoriasis (PPP) produces significant morbidity and requires prompt treatment. Topical agents form the mainstay of therapy. We compared the efficacy and side-effect profile of a steroid/coal-tar combination with topical psoralen and solar ultraviolet A (PUVAsol) in PPP. METHODS: In total, 52 patients with PPP were randomized to receive either a combination of clobetasol propionate cream and coal tar daily (group 1) or topical PUVAsol on alternate days (group 2) for 16 weeks. Response was assessed as change in Psoriasis Activity and Severity Index (PASI) and Patient Global Ass

Topical mechlorethamine. Cutaneous changes in patients with mycosis fungoides after its administration.

Six patients with mycosis fungoides were treated with topical mechlorethamine hydrochloride for periods of two to four years. Clinical and histological studies for radiomimetic and radiodermatitis-like effects failed to demonstrate any abnormalities. The only observed changes were generalized hyperpigmentation of the skin and melanin-containing melanophages in the papillary dermis. We consider that the long-term use of topical mechlorethamine may be a safe form of therapy, but that a continuous indefinite follow-up of patients on this medication should be mandatory.

Topical Steroid Damaged/Dependent Face (TSDF): An Entity of Cutaneous Pharmacodependence.

Topical Steroid Damaged/Dependent face (TSDF) is a phenomenon which has been described very recently (2008). It is characterized by a plethora of symptoms caused by an usually unsupervised misuse/abuse/overuse of topical corticosteroid of any potency on the face over an unspecified and/or prolonged period of time. This misuse and damage have a serious effect on the quality of life of the patients in general and the skin of the face in particular. Management is difficult and necessitates psychological counseling as well as physical soothing of the sensitive skin.

[Oral lichen ruber planus: treatment and drugs].

Oral lichen planus is a relatively common T-cell mediated inflammatory disease with potential malignant transformation. It may present itself with pain and oral lesions such as ulcers and Wickham's striae. Treatment includes topical corticosteroids, preferably Clobetasol, immunosuppressive drugs and retinoids. Hyaluronic acid and aloe vera have been proven to be successful. If topical treatment fails, systemic therapy with corticosteroids may be needed. Because of the potential malignant transformation periodic follow-up is mandatory.

Topical capsaicin for the treatment of acute lipodermatosclerosis and lobular panniculitis.

Topical capsaicin is well known to reduce nociceptive pain and neurogenic inflammation by depleting substance P. Its fibrinolytic and antithrombotic effects are less well known. We report two cases of acute lipodermatosclerosis which did not respond to several conventional treatment regimens and one case of acute lobular panniculitis in a pregnant woman with venous insufficiency, who were successfully treated within a short period of 3 weeks with topical 0.075% capsaicin cream.

Topical Erythropoietin Accelerates Wound Closure in Patients with Diabetic Foot Ulcers: A Prospective, Multicenter, Single-Blind, Randomized, Controlled Trial.

The diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a major disabling complication of diabetes mellitus. Growing evidence suggests that topical erythropoietin (EPO) can promote wound healing. The aim of this study is to clinically assess the efficacy of a proprietary topical EPO-containing hydrogel for treating DFUs. We conducted a randomized, controlled trial in 20 patients with DFUs. After a 14-day screening period, the DFUs of 20 eligible participants who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were randomly assigned (1:1) to either a 12-week of daily treatment with topical EPO and standard-of-care (SOC) or SOC trea

Efficacy of the combined excimer light and topical calcipotriol for acral vitiligo: A randomized double-blind comparative study.

Excimer light, topical vitamin D analogues, and topical steroids have been reported to be effective treatments for vitiligo. However, monotherapy often demonstrates unfavorable results for acral vitiligo. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of combination treatment with 308-nm excimer light and topical calcipotriol or topical clobetasol ointment for acral vitiligo. A prospective, randomized, double-blind, and intraindividual study was conducted. Combination treatment (excimer light and topical medication) was applied in the first 12 weeks, and monotherapy (topical medication a

Topical Vancomycin for Surgical Prophylaxis in Pediatric Craniofacial Surgeries.

Topical vancomycin has been demonstrated to be safe and effective for reducing surgical site infections (SSIs) following spine surgery in both adults and children, however, there are no studies of its efficacy in reducing SSIs in craniofacial surgery. The SSIs are one of the most common complications following craniofacial surgery. The complexity of craniofacial procedures, use of grafts and implants, long operative durations and larger surgical wounds all contribute to the heightened risk of SSIs in pediatric craniofacial cases. A retrospective review of all open and endoscopic pediatric cran

Systemic toxicity of topical corticosteroids.

Corticosteroids are known to cause many ocular and systemic side effects when administered by oral or parenteral routes. Corticosteroid induced systemic toxicity secondary to topical steroid eye drops is rare. A 6-week-old, male infant was brought to our tertiary eye care center with bilateral congenital cataracts. The child underwent phacoaspiration with primary posterior capsulotomy without intraocular lens implantation in both eyes at an interval of 6 weeks. Child was initiated on topical betamethsone 0.1% eight times a day, tobramycin 0.3% six times a day, homatropine 2% twice a day, and c
