Development of depression assessment tools using humanoid robots -Can tele-operated robots talk with depressive persons like humans?

BACKGROUND: Depression is a common mental disorder and causes significant social loss. Early intervention for depression is important. Nonetheless, depressed patients tend to conceal their symptoms from others based on shame and stigma, thus hesitate to visit psychiatrists especially during early phase. We hypothesize that application of humanoid robots would be a novel solution. Depressed patients may feel more comfortable talking with such robots than humans. METHODS: We recruited 13 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and 27 healthy volunteers as controls. Participants took both

Seek COVER: using a disease proxy to rapidly develop and validate a personalized risk calculator for COVID-19 outcomes in an international network.

BACKGROUND: We investigated whether we could use influenza data to develop prediction models for COVID-19 to increase the speed at which prediction models can reliably be developed and validated early in a pandemic. We developed COVID-19 Estimated Risk (COVER) scores that quantify a patient's risk of hospital admission with pneumonia (COVER-H), hospitalization with pneumonia requiring intensive services or death (COVER-I), or fatality (COVER-F) in the 30-days following COVID-19 diagnosis using historical data from patients with influenza or flu-like symptoms and tested this in COVID-19 patient

A web-based personalized decision support tool for patients diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ: development, content evaluation, and usability testing.

PURPOSE: Patients diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) face trade-offs when deciding among different treatments, including surgery, radiation, and endocrine therapy. A less chosen option is active monitoring. While evidence from clinical trials is not yet available, observational studies show comparable results for active monitoring and immediate treatment on cancer outcomes in select subgroups of patients. We developed and tested a web-based decision support tool (DST) to help patients explore current knowledge about DCIS and make an informed choice. METHODS: The DST, an interactiv

Using artificial intelligence and longitudinal location data to differentiate persons who develop posttraumatic stress disorder following childhood trauma.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by complex, heterogeneous symptomology, thus detection outside traditional clinical contexts is difficult. Fortunately, advances in mobile technology, passive sensing, and analytics offer promising avenues for research and development. The present study examined the ability to utilize Global Positioning System (GPS) data, derived passively from a smartphone across seven days, to detect PTSD diagnostic status among a cohort (N = 185) of high-risk, previously traumatized women. Using daily time spent away and maximum distance traveled from h

Psychometric Properties of Cognitive-Motor Dual-Task Studies With the Aim of Developing a Test Protocol for Persons With Vestibular Disorders: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVES: Patients suffering from vestibular disorders (VD) often present with impairments in cognitive domains such as visuospatial ability, memory, executive function, attention, and processing speed. These symptoms can be attributed to extensive vestibular projections throughout the cerebral cortex and subcortex on the one hand, and to increased cognitive-motor interference (CMI) on the other hand. CMI can be assessed by performing cognitive-motor dual-tasks (DTs). The existing literature on this topic is scarce and varies greatly when it comes to test protocol, type and degree of vestibu

A protocol to develop and study the effectiveness and implementation of social skills training that improves supported housing retention for persons with serious mental illness.

INTRODUCTION: Supported housing-which offers permanent, community-based housing and supportive services-effectively addresses homelessness. Yet, many persons with serious mental illness (SMI) struggle to retain housing in these programs. Social skills-which facilitate social interactions and instrumental tasks-predict premature exits from supported housing. Though social skills training effectively improves social skills and functioning for persons with SMI, this intervention is essentially absent from supported housing initiatives. METHODS: This study will use literature review, key informan

Feasibility for developing cardiovascular exercise recommendations for persons with motor-complete paraplegia based on manual wheelchair propulsion; A protocol and preliminary data.

BACKGROUND: The Center for Disease Control, American Heart Association, and American College of Sports Medicine recommendations for duration and intensity of exercise are based on the amount of energy expenditure required to maintain cardiovascular health in able body individuals; 1000 Kilocalories (Kcals) per week of energy expenditure has been demonstrated to achieve this effect. Manual wheelchair propulsion (MWP) represents a practical and accessible form of exercise for individuals with paraplegia. OBJECTIVE: To describe a method to determine the duration of MWP required to expend 1000 Kc

Bullying of staff registered nurses in the workplace: a preliminary study for developing personal and organizational strategies for the transformation of hostile to healthy workplace environments.

The primary purpose of this study was to validate the perceptions of frequency and patterns of bullying behavior experienced by registered nurses (RNs) across the United States. This study was completed to develop relevant and sensitive tailored interventions for the future. A 30-item anonymous electronic survey was used to identify the frequency, type, perpetrators, and personal and professional consequences of bullying. Findings from the overall population of 303 RN respondents (mean age of 49 years) indicated that 70% of the bullying was reported by a predominant group of staff RNs (n = 212

Development of a personal monitoring method for nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide with Sep-Pak C18 cartridge sampling and ion chromatographic determination.

Personal monitoring methods for the determination of hourly integrated concentrations of NO2 and SO2 in ambient air have been developed. Triethanolamine (TEA)-impregnated C18 Sep-Pak cartridges were used to collect NO2 and SO2 simultaneously. After sampling, NO2 and SO2 as their nitrite, nitrate, sulfite and sulfate analogues were stripped from the cartridges with a solution of 5% methanol in distilled, deionized water (DDW) and then determined by ion chromatography. Laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate the sampling rate, collection and recovery efficiencies, breakthrough volumes, absor

Mechanical competence of proximal tibia in persons with spinal cord injury: development of a computational framework to quantify torsional and compressive stiffness and strength.

This study developed a framework to quantify the mechanical competence of the proximal tibia in spinal cord injury (SCI) and able-bodied (AB) participants. We created subject-specific finite element models of 53 proximal tibias (22 SCI, 5 AB) and quantified two torsional (stiffness, Kt and ultimate strength, Tult) and two compressive (stiffness, Kc and ultimate strength, Cult) metrics. We report the distributions of Kt, Tult, Kc, and Cult, and a minimum number of metrics required to quantify the mechanical competence of the proximal tibia. This work provides a foundation for confidence interva

Community-informed development of an in-person forum to promote breast cancer screening and research preparedness in rural and low-socioeconomic status women.

Rural and low-socioeconomic status women face social determinants of health barriers leading to disproportionately low rates of breast cancer screening and markedly reduced participation in clinical trials. To address this gap, we developed the WeCARE (Women's Engagement for Cancer Awareness, Resources, and Education) intervention using a community-engaged approach. This paper describes how Community Advisory Board feedback informed the development of Mayo Clinic Health System's WeCARE intervention components. Their input was systematically analyzed using the Consolidated Framework for Impleme

The development of local outpatient palliative care referral criteria for persons with advanced cancer at the University Hospital Centre Zagreb: a Delphi study.

BACKGROUND: Despite recommendations for early integration, persons with cancer in Croatia are often referred to palliative care late in their disease course. This study aimed to develop standardized local referral criteria to facilitate earlier palliative care referral at University Hospital Centre Zagreb (UHC Zagreb). METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods consensus process comprising two Delphi survey rounds with oncologists at UHC Zagreb, a facilitated consensus meeting to refine criteria, and a confirmatory survey. The initial item set drew on the Hui international consensus criteria and t

Development of a peer support program for persons with mental health conditions in India: a formative qualitative study with expert validation of program components.

BACKGROUND: Improving support for persons with long-term mental health challenges is a key concern in global mental health care. In recent years, peer support (PS) has been recognised as a person-centred and recovery-oriented approach for persons with mental health conditions. While most PS research originates from high-income countries, there's a notable gap in the literature and structured programs within low- and middle-income countries, including India. AIM: This study aimed to develop and validate a culturally adapted PS program for persons with mental health conditions tailored to the I

The REDUCE Intervention: The Development of a Person-Centred Cognitive Behavioural Intervention to Improve Ulcer Outcomes in People at Risk of Diabetic Foot Ulceration.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) affect approximately one-quarter of people living with diabetes. They are chronic, recur frequently and are associated with significant psychological distress and behavioural challenges. The REDUCE intervention is a person-centred, cognitive behavioural intervention designed to reduce the risk of DFU recurrence and support ulcer healing. Here, we describe the iterative development and optimisation of REDUCE, from its inception as a group-based intervention to an individually tailored intervention delivered via video call or telephone. We outline key st

Transcutaneous Spinal Cord Stimulation to Stabilize Seated Systolic Blood Pressure in Persons With Chronic Spinal Cord Injury: Protocol Development.

Transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) is an emerging therapeutic strategy to target spinal autonomic circuitry to normalize and stabilize blood pressure (BP) in hypotensive persons living with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). Our aim is to describe our current methodological approach to identify individual tSCS parameters that result in the maintenance of seated systolic blood pressure (SBP) within a pre-defined target range. The parent study is a prospective, randomized clinical trial in which eligible participants will undergo multiple mapping sessions to optimize tSCS parameter set
