Does personality explain social inequalities in mortality? The French GAZEL cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The 'indirect-selection' hypothesis proposes that some quality of the individual, a personality characteristic or intelligence, leads to both socioeconomic position (SEP) and health. We aim to quantify the contribution of personality measures to the associations between SEP and mortality. METHODS: Of the GAZEL cohort, 14 445 participants aged 39-54 years in 1993 and followed-up over 12.7 years, completed the Bortner-Type-A-scale, the Buss-Durkee-Hostility-Inventory and the Grossarth-Maticek and Eysenck-Personality-Stress-Inventory. Indicators of SEP, such as father's social class,

Hostility and childhood sexual abuse as predictors of suicidal behaviour in Borderline Personality Disorder.

Impulsivity is a multidimensional construct and has been previously associated with suicidal behaviour in borderline personality disorder (BPD). This study examined the associations between suicidal behaviour and impulsivity-related personality traits, as well as history of childhood sexual abuse, in 76 patients diagnosed with BPD using both the Structured Interview for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders III (DSM-III) Axis-II diagnoses and the self-personality questionnaire. Impulsivity-related traits were measured using the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11 (BIS-11), the Buss-

Temperament and character in adults with Asperger syndrome.

To study the personality characteristics of adults with Asperger syndrome, and investigate the value of self-rating personality inventories, we administered the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) to 31 outpatients with Asperger syndrome. The TCI is a self-rating personality inventory that has been validated in the Swedish general population. The results were compared with age- and sex-matched norm groups. Participants with Asperger syndrome scored significantly higher on harm avoidance and lower on self-directedness and cooperativeness. Reward dependence and novelty seeking tended to be…

Personality in torticollis: a controlled study.

The Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, the trait scales of the Leyton Obsessional Inventory, the Spielberger State Trait Anxiety Inventory, and a questionnaire assessing marital status and harmony were completed by 100 torticollis patients and a control group of 49 cervical spondylosis sufferers. Information regarding employment status, and events preceding onset of their complaint was also obtained. The two groups did not differ in terms of any of the personality dimensions evaluated, or in their self-reports of events prior to onset of their illness. The groups differed significantly with re

Measures of Personality Pathology, Levels of Functioning, and Physical Health in an Urban Primary Care Sample.

Integrative approaches in the primary care setting have grown in favor over the past few decades, with many interesting findings about the influence of personality disorders on physical health and functioning; however, less is known about how specific pathological personality traits impact patient-provider assessments of physical and mental health. Using the DSM-5 Levels of Personality Functioning Questionnaire-Short Form (DLOPFQ-SF) and Personality Inventory for DSM-5-Brief Form, these relationships were evaluated in a sample of 50 inner-city, low-income patients in a primary care clinic. Poi…

Perfectionistic Children and Their Parents: Is There Room for an Intergenerational Transmission? A Study of a Clinical Sample of Italian Children and Their Parents.

INTRODUCTION: The relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and Internalizing (ID) and Externalizing Disorders (ED) in children needs to be better understood, along with the intergenerational transmission of these traits from parents to children. The present work aimed to share light on both these issues. METHOD: 39 children with ID, 19 with ED, and their parents were recruited*. The Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, the Big Five Inventory, the Child and Adolescent Perfectionism Scale, and the Hierarchical Personality Inventory for Children were used. The association between parent p…

Preliminary psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the structured interview of personality organization (STIPO-CH).

BACKGROUND: Kernberg originally proposed the psychoanalytic concept of personality organization (PO), which measures personality pathology from a dimensional approach with multiple scales and can be evaluated using the Structured Interview of Personality Organization (STIPO) from six domains: identity, object relations, primitive defenses, coping vs. rigidity, aggression, and moral values. The present study translated the original version into the Chinese STIPO (STIPO-CH) version and evaluated its reliability and validity. METHODS: The STIPO-CH was administered to 49 non-clinical subjects. Th

Personality psychopathology in temporal lobe epilepsy: An Arabian study.

OBJECTIVES: Previous research has linked epilepsy of the temporal lobe (TLE) with comorbidities of psychiatric nature, yet few studies have investigated personality psychopathology in patients with TLE. This is the first study on the topic in the Arab world and the first study using the Personality Inventory for DSM-5-Brief From (PID-5-BF). Thus, this study, which is cross-sectional by nature, aims to explore the potential relationship between TLE and personality psychopathology. METHODS: Utilizing the validated Arabic version of the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 - Brief Form (PID-5-BF), th…

Temperament, character, and personality disorder in bulimia nervosa.

In a sample of 76 women participating in a clinical treatment trial for bulimia nervosa, we examined the clinical differences between subjects with and without concurrent personality disorders and the ability of "self-directedness" (a character scale of Cloninger's Temperament and Character Inventory) to predict the presence of personality disorder. Sixty-three percent of the sample had at least one personality disorder diagnosis. Fifty-one percent of personality disorders were in cluster C, 41% were in cluster B, and 33% were in cluster A. The presence of personality disorder was associated w

Situating Psychopathy Within the DSM-5 Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD) Among Italian Community-Dwelling Adults.

Given growing evidence for a joint hierarchical framework of clinical and personality symptomatology, situating triarchic traits within this model would acknowledge transdiagnostic trait-related variance and provide a basis for linking the DSM-5 Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD) domains to established indicators of these neurobehavioral traits. The current study (N = 2,041 Italian adults) sought to replicate and extend recent evidence regarding the locations of triarchic traits within the AMPD and to examine relations with criterion measures at different levels of the hierarchy

Evidence for response set effects in structured research interviews.

The Addiction Severity Index and NIMH Diagnostic Interview Schedule data of 20 methadone-maintained subjects with "fake bad" invalid profiles on the Personality Assessment Inventory, 15 methadone-maintained subjects with "fake good" invalid profiles, and 158 methadone-maintained subjects with valid profiles were compared. The findings revealed a number of significant group differences on both measures with the highest scores for the fake bad subjects and lowest scores for the fake good subjects. These findings suggest that the response sets exhibited in response to the Personality Assessment I

Self-ratings of anger and hostility in borderline personality disorder.

Forty-six patients with borderline personality disorder with and without major depression and 27 normal volunteers completed the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory, a self-rating scale of anger and hostility. The patients with borderline personality had significantly higher scores than the normal volunteers. The scores of the patients with borderline personality disorders were not related to gender, treatment or research setting, the degree of acute distress, or the presence of major depression. These findings suggest that a proneness to anger and hostility are enduring characteristics of borderl

Impaired decision making in opiate addiction correlates with anxiety and self-directedness but not substance use parameters.

BACKGROUND: Despite a large number of empirical reports of impaired decision making in substance use disorders, the underlying factors contributing to such deficits remain to be elucidated. This study examined the potential influences of personality traits, affective symptoms, and pharmacological variables on decision making, as measured by the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) in a sample of opioid-dependent patients. METHODS: A total of 46 opioid-dependent patients taking part in an opiate maintenance outpatient program and 46 healthy control subjects performed the IGT. Personality traits and affect

[Attachment predicts changes in the level of personality functioning after psychotherapeutic inpatient treatment].

Objectives: The relationship between patients' attachment strategies and the effectiveness of psychotherapy is empirically well established. However, studies on outcome measures other than symptomatic change are mostly lacking. The present study investigates if attachment anxiety and avoidance predict changes in personality functioning at the end of inpatient psychotherapy. Method: In two independent samples (the first sample consisting of N = 967 diagnostically heterogeneous patients, Fachklinikum Tiefenbrunn, and the second sample comprising N = 344 patients with personality impairments, Reh
