AIM: To explore the association of GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) with the risk of psychiatric disorders.
METHODS: A systematic search was performed in PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library and Web of Science (inception to June 13, 2025). Randomised clinical trials (RCTs) that compared the use of GLP-1 RAs with either placebo or other non-GLP-1 RAs treatments were included. Psychiatric disorders were collected based on reported treatment-emergent adverse events. Following PRISMA guidelines, two reviewers independently extracted data and evaluated the quality of each study using the Cochrane t

BACKGROUND: There is substantial empirical research linking borderline personality disorder with prolonged mental instability and recurrent suicidality. At the same time, a growing body of observations links borderline personality disorder to sexual abuse and other forms of abuse and trauma in childhood. The aim of this study was to investigate among patients admitted for parasuicide the predictive value for outcome 7 years after the parasuicide of a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder compared to the predictive value of a history of childhood sexual abuse.

BACKGROUND: Clinical studies have shown that children of parents with mental health problems are most likely to develop psychiatric problems themselves when their parents have a Personality Disorder characterized by hostility. The Personality Disorders that appear most associated with hostility, with the potential to affect children, are Borderline Personality Disorder, Antisocial Personality Disorder and Narcissistic Personality Disorder. The question addressed in this study is whether the risk to children's mental health extends to the normal population of parents who have subclinical sympto

This paper explores domestic dynamics in the complex making of institutional psychiatry in Japan in c. 1920-45. It mainly examines gender issues between the relatively long-lasting system of the family care of mentally ill members and the use of freshly introduced systems of psychiatric hospitals. I shall look at the record of Ohji Brain Hospital (1901-45) in Tokyo, which has several thousands of case histories mainly in Tokyo c. 1920-45. From the analysis of the cases of male and female patients, as well as the complex situations of their households and kin groups, I shall look at the gender

With its recent inclusion in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, nonsuicidal self-injury disorder (NSSID) has received limited research attention, especially in samples of military veterans. The present study sought to identify diagnostic predictors of NSSID within a veteran sample. Study participants included 124 veterans with at least one psychiatric diagnosis. Chi-square tests and t-tests evaluated bivariate associations between NSSID and twenty diagnostic correlates. Logistic regression models identified psychiatric disorders that were unique correlates of NSSID among veterans. Veterans

Previous evidence links substance use disorders (SUD) to STI/HIV risk and suggests that comorbid psychiatric disorders increase the probability to engage in sexual risk behaviors. This study had two aims: (1) to identify subgroups based on sexual risk behavior using a person-centered approach in a sample of substance users and (2) to measure the association of psychiatric and SUD with subgroup membership. We assessed 402 male adults with SUD, reporting sexual intercourse in the previous 12 months using the HIV-Risk Behavior Scale and the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Latent cl

This article critically analyses provisions in the Mental Health Bill 2025 that, if passed, will amend the Mental Health Act (MHA) 1983 to create a power for tribunals and the Justice Secretary to discharge restricted patients from hospital subject to conditions that deprive them of their liberty in the community. These provisions pose a threat to the human rights of patients who straddle the divide between the mental health and criminal justice systems. Furthermore, the provisions and the cases that preceded them expose the limits of policies of de-institutionalisation and official ambitions

OBJECTIVE: This study looks at tobacco use among persons with psychiatric disorders and its management in public psychiatric units in France.
METHODS: A thematic analysis based on semi-directive interviews with 10 patients and 9 caregivers was carried out.
RESULTS: Patients use tobacco to deal with their emotions and mood swings. However, mental health professionals, who only focus on mental disorders and addictions that have a direct impact on behaviors, disregard smoking addiction. Moreover, tobacco is sometimes integrated into the way services operate. However, it would be too simplistic …

Understanding the prevalence and type of personality disorder within prison systems allows for the effective targeting of resources to implement strategies to alleviate symptoms, manage behaviour and attempt to reduce re-offending. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of personality disorder (PD) traits within a local urban high-turnover adult male prison with a remand/recently sentenced population in London, UK. The International Personality Disorder Examination - Screening Questionnaire (IPDE-SQ) self-administered questionnaire (ICD-10 version) was completed by 283 prisoners (42% com

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the characteristics related to avoidant attachment of 13 schizoid/avoidant psychiatric outpatients and 20 nonschizoid/avoidant psychiatric outpatients.
METHOD: Three scales ("maintains distance in relationships", "high priority on self-sufficiency" and "attachment relationship is a threat to security") differentiated schizoid and avoidant personality disordered patients from other personality disordered patients.
RESULTS: The results are discussed in terms of the attachment and DSM diagnostic models of avoidant styles in relationships.
CONCLUSION: The 2 groups of s

BACKGROUND: Involuntary psychiatric admissions are a widely used practice despite ethical concerns about coercion. There are particular concerns that vulnerable groups, such as single, unemployed or racial minorities, may be more subjected to such practices.
AIM: We aimed to investigate the social patterns of involuntary psychiatric admissions from 2008 to 2017 at University General Hospital in Ioannina, Greece.
METHOD: We retrospectively assessed inpatient records from 2008 to 2017 of patients admitted to the Department of Psychiatry of the Ioannina University General Hospital, Northwestern

AIM: To identify the influence of combined pathology, an organic personality disorder and affective disturbances, on the regulation of subjects' legally significant behavior in forensic-psychiatric examination in criminal and civil proceedings.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two groups of patients with the diagnosis of organic personality disorder (ICD-10 F07) established in the course of forensic-psychiatric examination were studied. The first group included 82 criminally prosecuted men (mean age 40.7±15.8); the second group comprised 50 women (mean age 65.1±15.4) and 28 men (mean age 60.2±14.4), who

IMPORTANCE: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been associated with psychiatric morbidity in adults, although previous studies have not accounted for familial confounding. In children, IBD has an even more severe course, but the association between childhood-onset IBD and psychiatric morbidity remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the risk of psychiatric morbidity in individuals with childhood-onset IBD, controlling for potential confounding shared between siblings.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A population-based cohort study was conducted using data from the Swedish national health

Recent evidence indicates persons 60 years and over experience significant alcohol and substance abuse problems. Since a combination of alcoholism and depression is likely to increase the relative rsk of suicide, it is important to examine the prevalence of dual diagnosis in older adults. The purpose of this study is to examine the prevalence and correlates of dual diagnosis in older psychiatric inpatient populations and compare our results with findings from studies of younger hospitalized dually diagnosed patients. A retrospective chart audit was performed on 101 elders who were discharged f

Prompt recognition of suicidal intent can prevent suicide in the elderly. Some psychiatric disorders, such as depression, psychoses and organic brain syndromes, can predispose these persons to suicide, as can medical disorders that result in pain, disability or dysfunction. Other factors that increase the risk for suicide include chemical dependency and changing life events. Anti-depressant medications with a low anticholinergic and sedative profile are preferred because of age-related physiologic changes. Electroconvulsive therapy is reserved for serious cases.

In 1980, the first formal association of mental patients, their relatives, and mental health professionals was founded in Athens, Greece. The Motion for the Rights of the "Mentally Ill" proposed a total restructuring of mental health care and a novel conceptualization of mental illness. On the one hand, it demanded that the mental health system be based on open services, psychotherapy, and on patients' active participation in all decisions concerning their treatment and life. On the other hand, it conceptualized mental illness as a political issue that concerned all. Thus, the Motion viewed th

The authors propose a new form of civil commitment that would benefit individuals with serious mental illness involved with the criminal justice system. This population has complex needs rooted in comorbid conditions, alienation from treatment and support systems, and poor access to care. Although many dollars are spent on costly assessments and hospitalization of jail detainees with serious mental illness to ensure that they are competent to stand trial, these detainees typically do not receive adequate services during incarceration or after release and recidivate at high rates. The proposed
