Activity of olive oil phenols on lymphomonocyte cytosolic calcium.

Phenols, present in the Mediterranean diet, have antioxidant properties and are free radical scavengers; however, the molecular mechanisms of their beneficial effects are not yet fully understood. The level of cytosolic calcium ([Ca2+]i) is an important signal also in nonexcitable cells, including immune cells, and regulates fundamental processes. In this paper, we determine [Ca2+]i in human lymphomonocytes incubated with two olive oil phenols: 3,4-(dihydroxyphenyl)ethanol and p-(hydroxyphenyl)ethanol. Both tested phenols increase [Ca2+]i in a dose-dependent way. This effect is antagonized by …

Antioxidant phenolic compounds from rhizomes of Polygonum paleaceum.

Polygonum paleaceum Wall. ex Hook. f. is a small herb in Polygonaceae family. In southwest of China, the rhizomes of this plant were used as folk drug for the treatment of chronic gastritis, duodenal ulcers, dysentery, wound, pain, hemorrhage and irregular menstruation. The crude aqueous acetone extract exhibited high antioxidant activity (SC(50) = 16.72 micro/ml) in 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryldydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging assay. With bioactivity-guided fractionations, 14 antioxidant phenolic compounds 1-14 were obtained from the air-dried rhizomes of this plant. Of them, compound 1, a new phen…

Recovery of phenolic antioxidants from wine industry by-products.

The recovery process of the phenolic compounds contained in the wine industry by-products and their antioxidant activity were examined in this work. To this purpose, a combined process of liquid and supercritical solvent extraction was employed. At first the effect of various process parameters of the liquid solvent extraction--the type of solvent and the pretreatment of the raw material (composition (skins, seeds, stems) and crushing)--on the antioxidant activity of the extract was examined. It was shown that an extract of a higher antioxidant activity was obtained by using ethyl acetate as s…

Model studies on reactions of plant phenols with whey proteins.

Whey proteins were modified by reaction with selected phenolic compounds (ferulic-, chlorogenic-, caffeic- and gallic acid) and related substances (quinic acid and p-quinone) as well as with extracts from coffee, tea, potato and pear at pH 9. The derivatives formed were characterized in terms of their physicochemical and digestion properties. The derivatization was accompanied by a reaction at the lysine and tryptophan side chains, whereby their content was decreased in comparison to that in the control whey proteins. Moreover, the solubility of the derivatives decreased over a broad pH range …

Manipulation of the phenolic chemistry of willows by gall-inducing sawflies.

The ability to induce galls on plants has evolved independently in many insect orders, but the adaptive significance and evolutionary consequences of gall induction are still largely unknown. We studied these questions by analyzing the concentrations of various plant defense compounds in willow leaves and sawfly galls. We found that the galls are probably nutritionally beneficial for the sawfly larvae, because the concentrations of most defensive phenolics are substantially lower in gall interiors than in leaves. More importantly, changes in chemistry occur in a similar coordinated pattern in …

Detection of antibodies to phenolic glycolipid by ELISA in leprosy patients.

Antibody (IgM) response to PGL-1, a surface glycolipid unique to Mycobacterium leprae has been studied in 25 cases each of lepromatous and tuberculoid leprosy and in 25 healthy controls. The absorbance value at 488 nm was expressed as antibody titre. Serum antibody titre was found to be significantly higher in patients than controls. Results confirm that antibody response in leprosy patients depend upon bacterial load.

Ice Converts Phenols into Persistent Mineral-Bound Polymers.

Freezing fundamentally alters how minerals transform dissolved phenols in cold environments. As water freezes, solutes are excluded from the crystal lattice and concentrated into microscopic pockets of unfrozen liquid, creating reaction conditions far more extreme than those of bulk solution. Here, we compare catechol oxidation on a key soil manganese oxide under freeze-thaw versus room-temperature conditions. Freezing redirects products from soluble humic-like substances to thermally stable, mineral-bound polymers. Freeze-thaw conditions removed over 50% of dissolved organic carbon within 24 …

Metal-phenolic networks: a promising strategy for cancer immunotherapy.

Cancer immunotherapy has revolutionized oncology, yet its clinical efficacy remains constrained by the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment, poor immune cell infiltration, low tumor immunogenicity, and inefficient delivery of immunomodulators. Metal-phenolic networks (MPNs), coordination assemblies formed from polyphenolic ligands and metal ions, have attracted increasing interest for their dual role in integrating material-intrinsic immune modulation with drug delivery. Metal ions such as Mn²⁺ and Fe²⁺ mediate context‑dependent immune regulation. Mn²⁺ boosts cGAS‑STING activation by enhan…

Phenolic Secondary Metabolites in Aldrovanda vesiculosa L. (Droseraceae).

Background: Aldrovanda vesiculosa L. is a small aquatic plant that produces snap traps for capturing zooplankton prey. Aldrovanda belongs to the family Droseraceae, which is well known for the production of secondary metabolites (especially naphthoquinones). However, compared to other species in this family (Drosera and Dionaea), A. vesiculosa has been very poorly studied in terms of metabolites. The Aim: To fill this gap in knowledge, we investigated what secondary metabolites are present in the shoots of these plants. A hypothesis was tested stating that there are more metabolites in the you

Associations of prenatal concentrations of environmental phthalates and phenols with preeclampsia.

INTRODUCTION: Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) like phthalates and phenols are ubiquitous in consumer products, raising concerns about fetal development and pregnancy complications such as hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP). While usage of some EDCs is declining, substitutes with limited safety data are increasing. Prior research suggests a potential link between EDCs and HDP, but findings remain inconsistent. The objective of our study was to investigate the association between prenatal concentrations of phthalates, including replacements, and phenols and the risk of preeclampsia …

Plant Phenolics in the Prevention and Therapy of Acne: A Comprehensive Review.

Plants are a rich source of secondary metabolites, among which phenolics are the most abundant. To date, over 8000 various polyphenolic compounds have been identified in plant species, among which phenolic acids, flavonoids, coumarins, stilbenes and lignans are the most important ones. Acne is one of the most commonly treated dermatological diseases, among which acne vulgaris and rosacea are the most frequently diagnosed. In the scientific literature, there is a lack of a detailed scientific presentation and discussion on the importance of plant phenolics in the treatment of the most common sp…

Valorisation of olive pomace: phenolic prospecting and biological potential.

Phenolic compounds were extracted from biphasic olive pomace and their biological potential was characterised. Two different extracts were prepared, E1 (40% methanol) and E2 (80% methanol), both subjected to agitation (180 min) and 70 °C. LC-ESI-qTOF-MS was used for individual quantification of the extracted phenolic compounds. The antioxidant activity was determined using different methods, including nitric oxide, DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and hydroxyl radical. The enzymes α-amylase and α-glucosidase were used to evaluate the antihyperglycemic potential and sulforhodamine B and MTT…

Ruthenium/η5-Phenoxo-Catalyzed Amination of Phenols with Amines.

Ruthenium(II) complexes are known to form η6-arene complexes with benzene-containing compounds through π-coordination, a property extensivel … In this study, we extended the ruthenium activation strategy to umpolung substitution reactions of phenols. The amination proceeds through a direct condensation between phenols and amines, with a key intermediate identified as [bis(η5-phenoxo)Ru], which is in situ generated from a commercially available ruthenium catalyst. In comparison with the well-st …

Characterization and properties of phenolic resin doped modified lignin.

Phenolic resins occupy an important position in industrial applications, but phenol, one of the raw materials for synthesis, is a non-renewable resource. Lignin, as a natural polymer containing phenolic hydroxyl groups, alcohol hydroxyl groups and other reactive groups, can replace some of the phenol in the synthesis of phenolic resins, which can reduce the amount of phenol, thus reducing the cost of phenolic resins, while effectively promoting the high value-added use of renewable biomass resources. Due to its low reactivity, alkaline lignin is usually discharged as production waste, unaware …
