Gene-environment interactions explain a substantial portion of variability of common neuropsychiatric disorders.

In complex diseases, the phenotypic variability can be explained by genetic variation (G), environmental stimuli (E), and interaction of genetic and environmental factors (G-by-E effects), among which the contribution G-by-E remains largely unknown. In this study, we focus on ten major neuropsychiatric disorders using data for 138,383 United States families with 404,475 unique individuals. We show that, while gene-environment interactions account for only a small portion of the total phenotypic variance for a subset of disorders (depression, adjustment disorder, substance abuse), they explain

Ambulatory assessment in panic disorder and specific phobia.

Anxiety disorders are among the most prevalent mental disorders. In panic disorder, panic attacks often occur at unpredictable times, making it difficult to study these episodes in the laboratory. In specific phobias, symptoms occur in very circumscribed situations and specific triggers are sometimes difficult to reproduce in the laboratory. Ambulatory assessment, or ecological momentary assessment, can further the understanding of the natural course and scope of symptoms under ecologically valid circumstances. Because bodily symptoms are integral to the diagnosis of anxiety disorders, the obj

Distribution of major mental disorders in an US metropolis.

This paper reviews the evolution of psychiatric nosologies in North America and the major epidemiological surveys of Mental Disorders culminating with the recently completed National Institute of Mental Health Epidemiologic Catchment Area project (NIMH-ECA). The NIMH-ECA examined the prevalence of diagnosable (DSM III) Mental disorders in 5 U.S. communities utilizing a highly structured diagnostic interview, the Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS). Data from the Los Angeles ECA, one of five study sites are presented with particular emphasis on cross-cultural comparison (Mexican Americans versu

Current approaches to etiology and pathophysiology of specific phobia.

Specific phobia is a common, heterogeneous disorder whose central feature is persistent, unreasonable fear of a circumscribed object or situation. This article reviews current etiological theories and empirical data that seem likely to be important in investigating the pathophysiology of this disorder. These include conditioning, modified conditioning, and nonassociative models of phobia development, physiological response to the phobic stimulus, neuroimaging, primate, and biological challenge studies. Pathophysiological hypotheses suggested by recent research on the neurocircuitry of conditio

Overview of anxiety disorders: prevalence, biology, course, and treatment.

Anxiety disorders are extremely common in modern society. The Epidemiologic Catchment Area (ECA) Study reported a 1-month prevalence for anxiety disorders of 7.3%, and a lifetime prevalence of 14.6%. Three anxiety disorders were emphasized: panic disorder with a lifetime prevalence of 1.6%, phobic disorders with a lifetime prevalence of 12.5%, and obsessive compulsive disorder with a lifetime prevalence of 2.5%. Data from the ECA survey indicated that all of these disorders are more common in women than in men. Familial proclivities toward anxiety have been reported. Panic attacks may be easil…

Claustrophobia-empowering the patient.

• Claustrophobia, a phobic anxiety disorder, is a well-known relative contraindication for MR, and anxiety or fear is triggered by confinement or the prospect of confinement in the MR environment.• Within the field of MR, claustrophobia is generally counteracted by reducing or deflecting attention from triggering stimuli in the MR environment by technical means, which increases relaxation and comfort and thus improves compliance.• Psychological interventions and self-empowerment of patients might become the next level of coping strategies.

Social phobia in the primary care medical setting.

BACKGROUND: Social phobia (social anxiety disorder) is a common disorder that is receiving more attention as new treatments become available. Little is known about social phobia as it appears in the primary care setting. The purpose of our study was to determine the prevalence of social phobia in a primary care clinic, the rates of comorbidity with other anxiety and mood disorders, the extent of disability, and patterns of healthcare utilization. METHODS: A total of 511 English-speaking adults presenting for routine medical care participated in a 2-stage screening consisting of the administra

[Treatment of social anxiety disorder (SAD)].

Social anxiety disorder(SAD) is the most common anxiety disorder and it is a risk factor for subsequent substance abuse. The efficacy of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor(SNRI) for the treatment of SAD has been reported. Cognitive behavioral therapy(CBT) was also effective for the treatment of SAD in many studies. High rate of co-occurring SAD and alcohol use disorder (AUD) can be found in both clinical samples and in the general population. With regard to treatments for those suffering from SAD and AUD, little is known about the mos

The relation between public speaking anxiety and social anxiety: a review.

This article reviewed the literature on public speaking anxiety in the context of social phobia subtyping. In total, 18 empirical studies on subtype issues related to public speaking anxiety were analyzed. Results of the reviewed studies are discussed in relation to their research method, that is, whether it focused on qualitative or quantitative aspects of subtype differences and whether it used a clinical or community sample. Evidence supported the premise that public speaking anxiety is a distinct subtype, qualitatively and quantitatively different from other subtypes of social phobia. The

Anxiety symptoms distinguishing social phobia from panic and generalized anxiety disorders.

Social phobic (N = 14), generalized anxiety disorder (N = 18), and panic disorder patients (N = 48) were compared on four categories of anxiety symptoms: autonomic hyperactivity, muscular tension, vigilance, and apprehensive expectation. Six specific symptoms (palpitations, chest pains, tinnitus, blurred vision, headaches, fear of dying, and dry mouth) distinguished social phobia from panic disorder, while four (headaches, fear of dying, sweating, and dyspnea) distinguished social phobia from generalized anxiety disorder. Most symptom differences were in the autonomic hyperactivity category of

Exploring the symptomatology and assessment of emetophobia: A comprehensive scoping review.

Emetophobia, the specific fear of vomiting, is a poorly understood anxiety disorder. Despite a growing body of research, comprehensive reviews on its presentation and assessment are limited and dated. This scoping review maps, synthesises and explores existing literature on the assessment measures and symptomatology of emetophobia. Its purpose is to inform future clinical practices by identifying reliable assessment instruments and facilitating more accurate diagnosis, treatment planning, and research comparisons. Five online databases (PubMed, SCOPUS, PsycINFO, Google Scholar, PsyArXiy) were

Global research evidence on nomophobia during 2008-2022: a bibliometric analysis and review.

Nomophobia, often known as a 21st-century disorder, is a recent condition that has received considerable attention, with numerous studies conducted to better understand it since it was first introduced in 2008. To better understand the present research status and prospects to assist practitioners, policymakers, and funding agencies in protecting the population from nomophobia-related harm, a bibliometric study of nomophobia-related publications was conducted. We used Scopus and dimensions.ai to perform a search between 2008 and 2022. The HistCite, R software, and VOSviewer were used to analyze

The Perceived Beauty of Convex Polygon Tilings: The Influence of Regularity, Curvature, and Density.

Polygon tilings in natural and man-made objects show great variety. Unlike previous studies that have mainly focused on their classification and production methods, this study aimed at exploring factors that may contribute to the perceived beauty of convex polygon tilings. We analyze the dimensions of regularity, curvature, and density, as well as individual differences. Triangle tilings and hexagon tilings were tested in Experiment 1 and 2, respectively. The results showed that the perceived beauty of convex polygon tilings can be enhanced by higher levels of regularity and nonobvious local c

Recent developments in the intervention of specific phobia among adults: a rapid review.

Metalloproteinases remain important players in arthritic disease, in part because members of this large enzymatic family, namely matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) and MMP-13, are responsible for the irreversible degradation of articular cartilage collagen. Although direct inhibition of MMPs fell out of vogue with the initial clinical disappointment of the first generation of compounds, interest in other mechanisms that control these important enzymes has always been maintained. Since these enzymes are critically important for tissue homeostasis, their expression and activity are tightly regul

[Epidemiology of social phobia].

AIM: Social phobia (SP) represents one of the most frequent psychiatric disorders. The results of a systematic review of the literature published between 1987 and 2008 on the prevalence of SP in general population are reported. METHODS: A literature search of epidemiologic studies of SP was conducted on PubMed and Medline electronic archives and by canvassing English-language and other European languages publications. Eligible publications were restricted to community surveys on adult population (age 16 to 65), using DSM and ICD criteria and analysing lifetime, 12 months and 1 month prevalenc
