From localization to distribution: revisiting the functional organization of the extrastriate body area.

The extrastriate body area is a functional region of the human brain located in the lateral occipitotemporal cortex and was originally identified by its greater activation in response to images of human bodies compared with several other object categories. In subsequent research, the extrastriate body area was associated with a wide range of cognitive functions and processes localized to a substantial portion of the posterior cortex. In this review, we summarize prior research on the extrastriate body area and examine evidence linking the region to various cognitive processes. We also review t

Dependence of contextual modulation in macaque V1 on interlaminar signal flow.

AIM: To evaluate the clinical value of abnormal laboratory results of multiple organs in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-2019) and to help clinicians perform correct treatment. RESULTS: Elevated neutrophil-to-LYM ratio (NLR), D-dimer(D-D), interleukin (IL)-6, IL-10, IL-2, interferon-Y, and age were significantly associated with the severity of illness. However, significant and sustained decreases were observed in the LYM subset (p<0.05). D-D, T cell counts, and cytokine levels in severe COVID-19 patients who survived the disease gradually recovered at later time points to levels

Optoretinography - Mechanisms and applications.

Optoretinography (ORG) refers to the optical imaging of light-evoked neural activity, specifically in the retina. The general protocol involves using an imaging instrument, such as a scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO) or optical coherence tomography (OCT), to monitor the retinal response evoked by a visual stimulus. Advances in imaging technology, such as adaptive optics, high-speed and parallel recordings, and phase-resolved detection with SLO and OCT, have together enabled the recording of stimulus-evoked retinal events across a range of spatiotemporal resolution, from individual to collect

Experience-Tuned Predictive Coding in Monocultural Brains: A Visual Mismatch Response Study.

Spontaneous cultural categorization, mediated by automatic preattentive mechanisms, has been established in bicultural individuals through visual mismatch response (vMMR). However, how long-term monocultural experience shapes this process remains unexplored. Using vMMR, a neural index of prediction-error signaling, we found that predominantly monocultural Mainland Chinese exhibited a significant negative vMMR specifically to nondominant cultural deviants, while showing null responses to dominant cultural deviants. For Western participants, our primary analysis revealed no statistically signifi

Neural Sensitivity to Radial Frequency Patterns in the Visual Cortex of Developing Macaques.

Visual resolution, contrast sensitivity, and form perception improve gradually with age. In nonhuman primates, the sensitivity and resolution of cells in the retina, lateral geniculate nucleus, and primary visual cortex (V1) also improve, but not enough to account for the perceptual changes. So, what aspects of visual system development limit visual sensitivity in infants? Improvements in behavioral sensitivity might arise from maturation of regions downstream of V1 such as V2, V4, and IT, which are thought to support increasingly complex perceptual abilities. We recorded the responses of popu

Emergence of a contrast-invariant representation of naturalistic texture in macaque visual cortex.

Sensory stimuli vary across a variety of dimensions, like contrast, orientation, or texture. The brain must rely on population representations to distinguish changes in one dimension from changes in another. To understand how the visual system might extract separable stimulus representations, we recorded multiunit neuronal responses to texture images varying along two dimensions: contrast, a property represented as early as the retina, and naturalistic statistical structure, a property that modulates neuronal responses in V2 and V4, but not in V1. We measured how sites in these 3 cortical area

Plastic vasomotion entrainment.

The presence of global synchronization of vasomotion induced by oscillating visual stimuli was identified in the mouse brain. Endogenous autofluorescence was used and the vessel 'shadow' was quantified to evaluate the magnitude of the frequency-locked vasomotion. This method allows vasomotion to be easily quantified in non-transgenic wild-type mice using either the wide-field macro-zoom microscopy or the deep-brain fiber photometry methods. Vertical stripes horizontally oscillating at a low temporal frequency (0.25 Hz) were presented to the awake mouse, and oscillatory vasomotion locked to the

Modulating the difficulty of a visual oddball-like task and P3m amplitude.

It is often necessary to modulate the difficulty of an experimental task without changing physical stimulus characteristics that are known to modulate event-related potentials. Here, we developed a new, oddball-like visual discrimination task with varying levels of difficulty despite using almost identical visual stimuli. Gabor patches of one orientation served as frequent standard stimuli with 75% probability. Gabor patches with a slightly different orientation served as infrequent target stimuli (25% probability). Analyzing the behavioral outcomes revealed a successful modulation of task dif

Contrast Sensitivity of ON and OFF Human Retinal Pathways in Myopia.

The human visual cortex processes light and dark stimuli with ON and OFF pathways that are differently modulated by luminance contrast. We have previously demonstrated that ON cortical pathways have higher contrast sensitivity than OFF cortical pathways and the difference increases with luminance range (defined as the maximum minus minimum luminance in the scene). Here, we demonstrate that these ON-OFF cortical differences are already present in the human retina and that retinal responses measured with electroretinography are more affected by reductions in luminance range than cortical respons

Optokinetic response in D. melanogaster reveals the nature of common repellent odorants.

Animals' ability to orient and navigate relies on selecting an appropriate motor response based on the perception and integration of the environmental information. This is the case, for instance, of the optokinetic response (OKR) in Drosophila melanogaster, where optic flow visual stimulation modulates head movements. Despite a large body of literature on the OKR, there is still a limited understanding, in flies, of the impact on OKR of concomitant, and potentially conflicting, inputs. To evaluate the impact of this multimodal integration, we combined in D. melanogaster, while flying in a teth

Moonless night sky increases Isistius species (cookiecutter shark) and live human contact.

The nocturnal feeding behavior and zoogeographical habitat of cookiecutter sharks Isistius brasiliensis and Isistius plutodus (Isistius spp.) greatly reduces interaction of this species with live humans. Attacks on live humans are exceedingly rare with 7 cases reported worldwide, 6 of them in Hawai'i, and 5 of these occuring among channel swimmers. Published research suggests that periods of bright moonlight may increase Isistius spp. contact with live humans and does not otherwise identify significant trends or risk factors. Yet 5 of the 6 Isistius spp. bites on live humans in Hawai'ian water

Encoding surprise by retinal ganglion cells.

The efficient coding hypothesis posits that early sensory neurons transmit maximal information about sensory stimuli, given internal constraints. A central prediction of this theory is that neurons should preferentially encode stimuli that are most surprising. Previous studies suggest this may be the case in early visual areas, where many neurons respond strongly to rare or surprising stimuli. For example, previous research showed that when presented with a rhythmic sequence of full-field flashes, many retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) respond strongly at the instance the flash sequence stops, and

Semantic novelty modulates neural responses to visual change across the human brain.

Our continuous visual experience in daily life is dominated by change. Previous research has focused on visual change due to stimulus motion, eye movements or unfolding events, but not their combined impact across the brain, or their interactions with semantic novelty. We investigate the neural responses to these sources of novelty during film viewing. We analyzed intracranial recordings in humans across 6328 electrodes from 23 individuals. Responses associated with saccades and film cuts were dominant across the entire brain. Film cuts at semantic event boundaries were particularly effective

Temporal dynamics of normalization reweighting.

For decades, neural suppression in early visual cortex has been thought to be fixed. But recent work has challenged this assumption by showing that suppression can be reweighted based on recent history; when pairs of stimuli are repeatedly presented together, suppression between them strengthens. Here we investigate the temporal dynamics of this process using a steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) paradigm that provides a time-resolved, direct index of suppression between pairs of stimuli flickering at different frequencies (5 and 7 Hz). Our initial analysis of an existing electroencep

Differences in own-face but not own-name discrimination between autistic and neurotypical adults: A fast periodic visual stimulation-EEG study.

Self-related processing is thought to be altered in autism, with several studies reporting that autistic individuals show a diminished neural response relative to neurotypicals for their own name and face. However, evidence remains scarce and is mostly based on event-related potential studies. Here, we used EEG to measure the neural activity of autistic adults (20 for faces, 27 for names) and neurotypical adults (24 for faces, 25 for names) while they were watching rapidly alternating faces and names, through a relatively new technique called Fast Periodic Visual Stimulation. We presented stra

Causal inference during closed-loop navigation: parsing of self- and object-motion.

A key computation in building adaptive internal models of the external world is to ascribe sensory signals to their likely cause(s), a process of causal inference (CI). CI is well studied within the framework of two-alternative forced-choice tasks, but less well understood within the cadre of naturalistic action-perception loops. Here, we examine the process of disambiguating retinal motion caused by self- and/or object-motion during closed-loop navigation. First, we derive a normative account specifying how observers ought to intercept hidden and moving targets given their belief about (i) wh

Neural mechanisms to incorporate visual counterevidence in self-movement estimation.

In selecting appropriate behaviors, animals should weigh sensory evidence both for and against specific beliefs about the world. For instance, animals measure optic flow to estimate and control their own rotation. However, existing models of flow detection can be spuriously triggered by visual motion created by objects moving in the world. Here, we show that stationary patterns on the retina, which constitute evidence against observer rotation, suppress inappropriate stabilizing rotational behavior in the fruit fly Drosophila. In silico experiments show that artificial neural networks (ANNs) t

Radial bias in face identification.

Human vision in the periphery is most accurate for stimuli that point towards the fovea. This so-called radial bias has been linked with the organization and spatial selectivity of neurons at the lowest levels of the visual system, from retinal ganglion cells onwards. Despite evidence that the human visual system is radially biased, it is not yet known whether this bias persists at higher levels of processing, or whether high-level representations are invariant to this low-level orientation bias. We used the case of face identity recognition to address this question. The specialized high-level

Neuronal Response to Reward and Luminance in Macaque LIP During Saccadic Choice.

Recent work in decision neuroscience suggests that visual saliency can interact with reward-based choice, and the lateral intraparietal cortex (LIP) is implicated in this process. In this study, we recorded from LIP neurons while monkeys performed a two alternative choice task in which the reward and luminance associated with each offer were varied independently. We discovered that the animal's choice was dictated by the reward amount while the luminance had a marginal effect. In the LIP, neuronal activity corresponded well with the animal's choice pattern, in that a majority of reward-modulat

A corollary discharge mediates saccade-related inhibition of single units in mnemonic structures of the human brain.

Despite the critical link between visual exploration and memory, little is known about how neuronal activity in the human mesial temporal lobe (MTL) is modulated by saccades. Here, we characterize saccade-associated neuronal modulations, unit-by-unit, and contrast them to image onset and to occipital lobe neurons. We reveal evidence for a corollary discharge (CD)-like modulatory signal that accompanies saccades, inhibiting/exciting a unique population of broad-/narrow-spiking units, respectively, before and during saccades and with directional selectivity. These findings comport well with the
