Les Mêmes Droits Pour Tous (MDT) is a human rights NGO in Guinea, West Africa that focuses on the rights of prisoners in Maison Centrale, the country's largest prison located in the capital city of Conakry. In 2007, MDT completed a survey of the prison population to assess basic legal and human rights conditions. This article uses statistical tools to explore MDT's survey results in greater depth, shedding light on human rights violations in Guinea. It contributes to human rights literature that argues for greater use of econometric tools in rights reporting, and demonstrates how human rights

BACKGROUND: The co-occurrence between attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and physical conditions is frequent but often goes unrecognised. Most available evidence on the links between ADHD and physical conditions relies on cross-sectional studies. Understanding temporal sequences of associations is key to inform appropriate treatment and preventive strategies. We aimed to assess possible longitudinal associations between ADHD symptoms and a broad range of physical conditions, adjusting for several confounding factors.
METHODS: Participants came from the population-based Quebec Lon

In the introduction the concept of health is discussed. The author emphasizes that the concept of health is often used in a biased and uncritical manner in discussions on the value of physical activity in relation to health. The practice of physical activity should be seen in relation to a more holistic concept of health, defined as a human being's total ability to function. Results are then presented from a number of investigations, of which the majority indicate a positive relation between physical activity and a reduction in the following indices of mental health: anxiety, depression, nervo

BACKGROUND: Studies on evolution of working conditions and workers' health in developed countries show conflicting results, and often fail to identify evolutions by occupational sector. This study aimed to describe recent evolutions of working conditions and health status of French workers over a decade across different activity sectors.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: Data from a large national French observatory of working conditions and health were used. This observatory collects, for a random sample of employees, data on their working conditions and health. Data on working conditions and health sta

It is now well-established that early life adversity (ELA) predisposes individuals to develop several neuropsychiatric conditions, including anxiety disorders, and major depressive disorder. However, ELA is a very broad term, encompassing multiple types of negative childhood experiences, including physical, sexual and emotional abuse, physical and emotional neglect, as well as trauma associated with chronic illness, family separation, natural disasters, accidents, and witnessing a violent crime. Emerging literature suggests that in humans, different types of adverse experiences are more or les

Research in neurophysiology has shown that humans are able to adapt the mechanical stiffness at the hand in order to resist disturbances. This has served as inspiration for optimising stiffness in robot arms during manipulation tasks. Endpoint stiffness is modelled in Cartesian space, as though the hand were in independent rigid body. But an arm is a series of rigid bodies connected by articulated joints. The contribution of the joints and arm configuration to the endpoint stiffness has not yet been quantified. In this paper we use mathematical optimisation to find conditions for maximum stiff

Hibernating brown bears (Ursus arctos) and black bears (Ursus americanus) spend half of the year in a physically inactive state inside their winter dens without food intake and defecating and no or little urination. Under similar extreme conditions, humans would suffer from loss of lean body mass, heart failure, thrombosis, azotemia, osteoporosis, and more. However, bears exit the den in the spring strong without organ injuries. Translational animal models are used in human medicine but traditional experimental animals have several shortcomings; thus, we believe that it is time to systematical

Neurofibromatosis type 1 and tuberous sclerosis are the two most common neurocutaneous disorders in humans. Both are transmitted as autosomal dominant conditions with a high rate of new mutations and similar clinical features. However, the two disorders have distinct and well-delineated genetic, biochemical, and physical findings. Simultaneous occurrence of these two conditions is rare. We report on a young girl who inherited both disorders, review similar cases reported in the world literature, and discuss possible implications of the presence of NF1 and TSC in the same individual.

The work and life routine of long-haul truck drivers (LHTDs) involve the use of truck stops and rest areas to meet their basic human needs. These extensions of their workspaces on the road do not always offer adequate physical structures and services that drivers need for optimal health. This study aimed to evaluate long-haul truck drivers' perceptions of food services, safety, physical activity, rest, and personal hygiene offered at truck stops and rest areas, as well as the correlation between these perceptions and sociodemographic, health, and work conditions variables. Viruses constitute a significant part of the human microbiome, so wherever humans go, viruses are brought with them, even on space missions. In this mini review, we focus on the International Space Station (ISS) as the only current human habitat in space that has a diverse range of viral genera that infect microorganisms from bacteria to eukaryotes. Thus, we have reviewed the literature on the physical conditions of space habitats that have an impact on both virus transmissibility and interaction with their host, which include UV radiation, ionizing radiation, humidity, and microgravity. Also,

Adaptogens are synthetic compounds (bromantane, levamisole, aphobazole, bemethyl, etc.) or plant extracts that have the ability to enhance the body's stability against physical loads without increasing oxygen consumption. Extracts from Panax ginseng, Eleutherococcus senticosus, Rhaponticum carthamoides, Rhodiola rosea, and Schisandra chinensis are considered to be naturally occurring adaptogens and, in particular, plant adaptogens. The aim of this study is to evaluate the use of plant adaptogens in the past and now, as well as to outline the prospects of their future applications. The use of n

INTRODUCTION: We previously investigated color constancy in photorealistic virtual reality (VR) and developed a Deep Neural Network (DNN) that predicts reflectance from rendered images.
METHODS: We combine both approaches to compare and study a model and human performance with respect to established color constancy mechanisms: local surround, maximum flux and spatial mean. Rather than evaluating the model against physical ground truth, model performance was assessed using the same achromatic object selection task employed in the human experiments. The model, a ResNet based U-Net from our prev

People are exposed to various potentially toxic agents and conditions in their natural and occupational environments. These agents may be physical or chemical, may enter the human body through oral, inhalational, or transdermal routes, and may exert effects on all organ systems. Several well-known as well as lesser known associations exist between chronic kidney disease (CKD) and both environmental agents and conditions, such as heavy metals, industrial chemicals, elevated ambient temperatures, and infections. The effects of these agents may be modulated by genetic susceptibility and other com

Body mass can be estimated from measures of skeletal frame size (stature and bi-iliac (maximum pelvic) breadth) fairly accurately in modern human populations. However, it is not clear whether such a technique will lead to systematic biases in body mass estimation when applied to earlier hominins. Here the stature/bi-iliac method is tested, using data available for modern Olympic and Olympic-caliber athletes, with the rationale that these individuals may be more representative of the general physique and degree of physical conditioning characteristic of earlier populations. The average percent

Mucositis is a common side effect of cancer therapies and transplant conditioning regimens. Management of mucositis involves multiple approaches from oral hygiene, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, cytoprotective, and antioxidant agents, to cryo-therapy, physical therapy, and growth factors. There is room for novel, affordable treatment options, or improvement of currently available therapies. Vitamin D has been shown to regulate mucosa-resident cell populations such as Th17 or innate lymphoid cells and critical mucosal cytokine IL-22; however, their therapeutic potential has not been put to

Repetitive mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) has been called the "signature injury" of military service members in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and is highly comorbid with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Correct attribution of adverse blast-induced mTBI and/or PTSD remains challenging. Pre-clinical research using animal models can provide important insight into the mechanisms by which blast produces injury and dysfunction-but only to the degree by which such models reflect the human experience. Avoidance of trauma reminders is a hallmark of PTSD. Here, we sought to understand whether

This study compares the effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and moderate-to-vigorous-intensity continuous training (MVICT) on physiological adaptations and physical performance across a broad population, from the general public to athletes. Additionally, it also explores how participant characteristics (e.g., sex, age, and training status) and training protocol parameters (e.g., mode, interval type, and intensity) influence the comparison. Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and CNKI databases, completed on September 21, 2024

PURPOSE: This study investigated the effects of speed, agility, and quickness training (SAQT) and free sprint training (FST) on lower limb muscle activation and crouch start reaction time in university students.
METHODS: Thirty-six participants were randomly assigned to either the SAQT or FST group. Both groups underwent 12 weeks of training (3 sessions/week). Electromyography (EMG) measured muscle activation and crouch start reaction time at pre-, mid-, and post-intervention. A mixed-design two-way ANOVA assessed changes over time.
RESULTS: SAQT led to greater improvements in muscle activat
