Gait variability and fatigability during a simulated 10-km running race in trained runners.

PURPOSE: Fatigue is an inevitable phenomenon during distance running, leading to the adoption of altered gait patterns by runners. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the changes in gait variability and fatigability in distance runners over a 10-km running race. METHODS: For this aim, 12 runners (36.5 ± 5.4 y) completed a simulated 10-km running race. Throughout the trial, heart rate (HR) and rate perceived exertion (RPE, CR-10) were analyzed. In addition, kinematic/kinetic measurements: contact time (CT), flight time (FT), step length (SL), stride time (ST) leg (kvert) and ve

Lymphocyte enzymatic antioxidant responses to oxidative stress following high-intensity interval exercise.

The purposes of this study were to 1) examine the immune and oxidative stress responses following high-intensity interval training (HIIT); 2) determine changes in antioxidant enzyme gene expression and enzyme activity in lymphocytes following HIIT; and 3) assess pre-HIIT, 3-h post-HIIT, and 24-h post-HIIT lymphocyte cell viability following hydrogen peroxide exposure in vitro. Eight recreationally active males completed three identical HIIT protocols. Blood samples were obtained at preexercise, immediately postexercise, 3 h postexercise, and 24 h postexercise. Heterogeneity of intrapleural pressures during exercise.

We determined whether the caudodorsal region of the intrapleural space in exercising horses experiences larger pressure fluctuations than other regions and whether systematic phase-shifting of peak intrapleural pressures along the length of the thorax suggests the existence of locomotor-induced intrapleural pressure waves. We utilised percutaneous introducers and solid-state pressure-tip transducers implanted along the dorsal aspect of the thorax, mid-thorax or oesophagus to measure regional intrapleural pressures while 3 horses galloped on a flat treadmill at 13-14 m/s, then recorded pressure

Exercise and the elderly.

Data from cross-sectional studies suggest that VO2max declines in adulthood at a rate of 0.40-0.45 ml.kg-1.min-1 per year in males and 0.30 ml.kg-1.min-1 per year in females. Longitudinal studies suggest that the loss is much greater for males, approximating 1.0 ml.kg-1.min-1 per year or more. The rate of loss may be greater in sedentary compared to active individuals. The decline in VO2max with age appears to be inevitable, and a major contributing factor may be the decline in maximal cardiac output. A reduced maximal heart rate is a consistent finding, and this may be due to decreased end-or

Coronary rehabilitation in the community.

Over a five-year period, 162 patients with coronary disease joined a physical rehabilitation course at a community sports centre gymnasium under the supervision of a general practitioner. One hundred and forty-seven patients had suffered a recent or old myocardial infarction and 15 suffered from angina pectoris. One hundred and thirty-eight patients (85 per cent) completed a three-month course of exercises, 16 (10 per cent) defaulted and eight (5 per cent) were withdrawn. One patient died at home during the three-month course. There were no changes in weight, blood pressure or blood fat measur

Hypothermia induced by 5-thio-D-glucose: Effects on treadmill performance in the heat.

In continuing our studies on the effects of preinduced hypothermia on the endurance capacities, thermoregulatory responses, and clinical chemical indices of heat injury, 10 mg of 5-thio-D-glucose (5-TG) were administered intravenously to restrained rats kept at 4 degrees C. When rectal temperatures (Tre) fell to 29-30 degrees C, the rats were removed to a hot environment (35 degrees C), where they exercised on a level treadmill (9.14 m/min) to hyperthermic exhaustion (Tre = 41.5-43 degrees C). Preinduced hypothermia was effective in significantly (p < 0.001) prolonging the time to hyperthermic

[Stimulation of growth hormone (HGH) secretion by physical exercise (author's transl)].

Authors study forty eight children with severe lineal growth retardation. The more frequent causes of a stunted growth were ruled out previously (systemic and chronic diseases, metabolic disorders, genetic alterations, etc.). As a screening test, physical exercise was used to detect growth hormone (HGH) deficiency. A normal response was considered when HGH levels rose more than 7,0 ng./ml. after 20 minutes of continuous exercise. In those cases in which this level was not attained. insulin-hypoglycemia alone and followed by insulin plus an arginine infusion were used as stimuli, to confirm the

Diagnosis and Management of Concussion.

Concussion occurs when a traumatic force of impact to the body or to the head results in a neurologic syndrome characterized by the acute onset of physical, cognitive, emotional, and sleep disruption that typically resolves over 2 weeks. Concussion diagnosis is based on a careful history and physical examination by an experienced provider and can be supplemented by objective tools that measure cognition, ocular tracking, and/or neurophysiology. Concussion management focuses on relative rest and gradual return to cognitive exertion. Evidence also supports early return to physical exercise, moni

Acute effect of three functional fitness training designs with equalized load on inexperienced and experienced athletes.

BACKGROUND: In the realm of functional fitness training (FFT), three common circuits-as many repetitions or round as possible (AMRAP), for time (FT), and every minute on a minute (EMOM)-are prevalent. We aimed to elucidate the immediate impacts on athletes, considering the experience, when performing three workout modalities with matched training loads. METHODS: Twenty-five healthy men and women, with at least three months of experience in FFT, were allocated into the Inexperienced group (IG) and Experienced group (EG). The cut point for allocating participant in each group was set at 24 mont

Comparison of hippocampal interleukin-6 immunoreactivity after exhaustive exercise in both exercise-trained and untrained rats.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Exhaustive exercise is a strong stress factor and can impact cytokine production in the brain. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is produced in greater amounts than any other cytokine in response to exercise, and its effects are closely related to both exercise duration and intensity. In this study, we measured the differences between the amount of IL-6 reactivity of the hippocampus after an exhaustive session ofrunning in long-term exercise-trained and untrained rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The exercise-trained group ran on a treadmill for 12 weeks. Both groups were forced to run until ex

Exercise capacity in young adults with hypertension and systolic blood pressure difference between right arm and leg after repair of coarctation of the aorta.

Coarctation of the aorta represents 5-7% of congenital heart defects. Symptoms and prognosis depend on the degree of stenosis, age at surgery, surgical method and the presence of other heart defects. Postoperative complications are hypertension, restenosis and an abnormal blood pressure response during exercise. This study includes 41 patients, 15-40 years old, operated in the period 1975-1996. All were exercised on a treadmill until maximal oxygen consumption was achieved. Blood pressure was measured in the right arm and leg before and immediately after exercise, and in the right arm during e
