Nutritional and genetic variation in a core set of Ethiopian Tef (Eragrostis tef) varieties.

BACKGROUND: Tef (Eragrostis tef) is a tropical cereal domesticated and grown in the Ethiopian highlands, where it has been a staple food of Ethiopians for many centuries. Food insecurity and nutrient deficiencies are major problems in the country, so breeding for enhanced nutritional traits, such as Zn content, could help to alleviate problems with malnutrition. RESULTS: To understand the breeding potential of nutritional traits in tef a core set of 24 varieties were sequenced and their mineral content, levels of phytate and protein, as well as a number of nutritionally valuable phenolic comp

Identifying causes of death of companion dogs in Japan using data from pet cemeteries.

This study aimed to identify the causes of death in dogs that were buried at pet cemeteries. Using data obtained from a questionnaire completed by 5,118 dog owners from 1 April 2016 to 31 March 2017, we estimated the life expectancy and the odds ratio for principal causes of death using multiple logistic regression analysis with potential risk factors as independent variables. The life expectancy determined at birth was 13.98 years. The commonest cause of death was senility. The odds ratios of dying of senility being significantly higher in Labrador Retrievers and Shiba breeds and aged dogs, a

Major QTLs for Trunk Height and Correlated Agronomic Traits Provide Insights into Multiple Trait Integration in Oil Palm Breeding.

Superior oil yield is always the top priority of the oil palm industry. Short trunk height (THT) and compactness traits have become increasingly important to improve harvesting efficiency since the industry started to suffer yield losses due to labor shortages. Breeding populations with low THT and short frond length (FL) are actually available, such as Dumpy AVROS pisifera (DAV) and Gunung Melayu dura (GM). However, multiple trait stacking still remains a challenge for oil palm breeding, which usually requires 12-20 years to complete a breeding cycle. In this study, yield and height increment

Diet and Hydrogen Sulfide Production in Mammals.

Significance: In recent times, it has emerged that some dietary sulfur compounds can act on mammalian cell signaling systems via their prope … nce of H2S generated from dietary sources, and this information could be used in the development of plant breeding initiatives to increase the levels of H2S releasing sulfur compounds in crops, or inform dietary intervention strategies that could be used to alter the levels of H2S in humans.

Yield response and categories of resistance to Russian wheat aphid in four Dn4 hard red winter wheat cultivars.

A field experiment was conducted to determine whether resistance to Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), conferred by the Dn4 gene is affected by genetic background. This was done by comparing the yield responses to Russian wheat aphid-resistant wheat containing Dn4, derived through the backcross method, to those of the corresponding recurrent parents. Infested resistant cultivars had fewer Russian wheat aphids per tiller than infested susceptible cultivars at the Lamar and Fort Collins, CO sites but not at the Akron, CO site. At the Lamar site, resistant cultivars yielded more th

The breeding structure for the small ruminant resources in India.

Intense selection for a few desired traits has resulted in reduction of the effective population size (Ne) in most of the plant and livestock populations across the world. The objective of the research was to assess the impact of Ne on the genetic architecture of the population in a simulated data with variable Ne for general population under selection. Along with this, the estimate of Ne and its ratio to adult breeding population (NB) in the census data of small ruminants of India were also investigated. Results indicated that the average inbreeding ([Formula: see text]) decreases with increa

Asparagus breeding: Future research needs for sustainable production.

Productivity in asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) is determined in part by (1) the selection of superior, adaptive genetics, (2) matching the selected genetics to the production environment, and (3) managing the crop production system in ways to maximize harvest potential that are sustainable, profitable, and efficient. Over the last 100 years, a considerable effort by asparagus researchers has gone into breeding superior genetic lines, testing those in numerous locations, and studying how asparagus responds to a multitude of inputs (fertilizers, irrigation, fungicides, herbicides, insectic

[Synthetic cannabinoids: far from "soft drugs"].

Cannabis is one of the world's most widely consumed illicit substances. In addition to being widely available, its potency has increased up to 100-fold over the last 25 years. In parallel with these plant breeding efforts, artificial products called synthetic cannabinoids (SC) have been developed in laboratories. They are more potent and dangerous than natural cannabis. This article focuses on the risks associated with SC use, their treatment, and screening from the perspective of emergency or primary care physicians.

Shade avoidance responses in seedlings of maize hybrids representing 100 years of breeding history.

Understanding how the spectral quality of light affects maize physiology is critical, as it mediates an early response to competition. We measured the effects of light quality on physiological traits at the seedling stage in 27 maize genotypes released from 1920 to 2022. High and low red/far-red ratios light conditions were simulated in a growth chamber. Low R/FR ratio caused shade avoidance responses, including increased plant height and decreased stem diameter. We hypothesized that long term selection for yield would reduce phenotypic response to low R/FR light conditions in seedling stages

The miR164e-NAC32 module orchestrates maize plant height via post-translational regulation of DELLA protein stability.

Optimization of plant architecture requires precise regulation of internode elongation; however, the post-translational mechanisms that integrate microRNA and phytohormone signaling remain poorly understood. Here, we describe a hierarchical miR164e-NAC32-DELLA regulatory network that controls stem development in maize. Genetic analyses demonstrate that ZmmiR164e negatively regulates its target gene ZmNAC32, with ZmmiR164e overexpression enhancing internode cell elongation and loss-of-function resulting in dwarfism. Notably, ZmNAC32 physically interacts with and stabilizes the DELLA protein ZmD

MYB transcription factors in plants: A comprehensive review of their discovery, structure, classification, functional diversity and regulatory mechanism.

The MYB transcription factor (TF) family is one of the largest families in plants and performs highly diverse regulatory functions, particularly in relation to pathogen/pest resistance, nutrient/noxious substance absorption, drought/salt resistance, trichome growth, stamen development, leaf senescence, and flavonoid/terpenoid biosynthesis. Owing to their vital role in various biological regulatory processes, the mechanisms of MYB TFs have been extensively studied. Notably, MYB TFs not only directly regulate targets, such as phytohormones, reactive oxygen species signaling and secondary cell wa

Phenotypic classification of opium poppy genotypes (Papaver somniferum L.) based on morpho-phenological traits.

Accurate classification of opium poppy (Papaver somniferum L.) genotypes based on phenotypic variation is essential for efficient breeding programs targeting specific traits such as flower and seed color. Opium poppy populations exhibit considerable variation in their morpho-phenological traits, particularly in flower and seed color, which is the focus of the present study. Descriptive plant measurements used to classify flower and seed color included germination time, flowering time, maturity time, plant height, number of capsules per plant, capsule length, capsule width, stigma rays, seed/ca

Suppressing an AUX/IAA gene GhIAA43 expression activates the SA-mediated immune pathway and enhances Verticillium wilt resistance in cotton.

Salicylic acid (SA) and auxin often exert antagonistic effects during pathogen challenge, and SA's inhibitory effect on auxin-mediated signaling pathway plays a crucial role in plant defense mechanisms. However, whether SA-mediated immunity can be enhanced through the inhibition of auxin signaling pathway remains unclear. Cotton GhIAA43, a member from the Aux/IAA family, was a resistance-related gene against Verticillium dahliae attack. Here, we clarified the role of GhIAA43 in regulating the auxin and SA-mediated pathways to improve the plant resistance by using the RNA interference (RNAi)-Gh

Overexpression of the Poa pratensis GA2ox gene family significantly reduced the plant height of transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana and Poa pratensis.

Gibberellin (GAs) is an important plant hormone that plays a key role in plant growth and development. Gibberellin 2-oxidase (GA2ox) catalyzes the inactivation of biologically active GA or their direct precursors. In this study, five GA2ox genes were isolated from the wild type Poa pratensis 'Baron', named PpGA2ox3, PpGA2ox4, PpGA2ox5, PpGA2ox8, and PpGA2ox9. Phylogenetic tree analysis showed that PpGA2ox3, PpGA2ox4, PpGA2ox5, and PpGA2ox8 belong to class I GA2ox genes, while PpGA2ox9 belongs to class III GA2ox genes. They expressed in all tissues of Poa pratensis, in each plant tissue and gro

Recessive Resistance to Plant Viruses: Potential Resistance Genes Beyond Translation Initiation Factors.

The ability of plant viruses to propagate their genomes in host cells depends on many host factors. In the absence of an agrochemical that specifically targets plant viral infection cycles, one of the most effective methods for controlling viral diseases in plants is taking advantage of the host plant's resistance machinery. Recessive resistance is conferred by a recessive gene mutation that encodes a host factor critical for viral infection. It is a branch of the resistance machinery and, as an inherited characteristic, is very durable. Moreover, recessive resistance may be acquired by a defi

Multi-scale lodging in rice and wheat: bridging biomechanical traits, phenotypic detection, and intelligent harvesting systems.

Lodging severely compromises the productivity and harvestability of rice and wheat, yet the mechanistic links among molecular regulation, tissue structure, whole-plant mechanical failure, field phenotypes, and harvesting responses remain insufficiently integrated. This review establishes a mechanically consistent, plant-centered, cross-scale framework that connects genetic and biochemical regulation to quantifiable engineering parameters, including bending moment, section modulus, flexural rigidity, and resisting moment, and links these parameters to canopy-scale structural and optical phenoty
