Preoperative histological or cytological confirmation of a diagnosis of bronchogenic carcinoma is not always possible, so occasionally non-neoplastic lesions are resected. Of these lesions a significant number are described by pathologists as 'unresolved pneumonia'. We studied the case notes and histopathology of 30 patients from whom lung had been resected and which had been classified as pneumonia. Other non-neoplastic lesions, such as pulmonary infarction, bronchiectasis, and tuberculosis, were excluded. All had a preoperative diagnosis of probable bronchial carcinoma. On review very few ap…

Thirty-three children were hospitalized for pneumonia associated with measles. Eight did not have rash but had serologic evidence of measles infection and an otherwise compatible clinical picture. Lung puncture and tracheal aspirations were performed on 21 of the patients. Mortality was 15.2% (five patients) and was not associated with the use of these procedures.

Eosinophilic pneumonia encompasses a group of lung disorders characterized by peripheral blood eosinophilia. While its etiology is often idiopathic or infectious, non-infectious causes, including drug-induced reactions, should also be considered. Common culprits of drug-induced eosinophilic pneumonia include daptomycin, phenytoin, and nitrofurantoin. Mesalamine-induced eosinophilic pneumonia is rare, with only a few cases documented in the literature. We present the case of a 27-year-old male patient who developed unilateral eosinophilic pneumonia following three months of mesalamine therapy f…

This study describes a 64-year-old female with a history of hepatitis C and cryoglobulinemia, who presented with respiratory symptoms, including dry cough, shortness of breath, and fever, alongside joint pain and fatigue. Initial workup revealed interstitial pneumonia, supported by chest imaging, and the patient was treated for pneumonia with standard antibiotic therapy. Despite no renal involvement, a hallmark of cryoglobulinemia, further testing confirmed elevated serum cryoglobulin levels. The patient was diagnosed with cryoglobulinemia complicated by pneumonia, a rare but significant manif…

Daptomycin-induced eosinophilic pneumonia (DIEP) is a rare complication of daptomycin use. Manifestations most commonly include fever, hypoxia, dyspnea, cough, eosinophilia, and lung changes on radiographs and CT. Patients typically have had recent daptomycin exposure and develop fever, dyspnea, infiltrates on chest radiograph, more than 25% eosinophils on bronchoalveolar lavage, and improvement of symptoms after withdrawal of daptomycin. Treatment includes discontinuation of daptomycin, corticosteroids, and supportive measures such as supplemental oxygen. Clinicians should have a high index o…

Complicated community-acquired pneumonia in a previously well child is a severe illness characterised by combinations of local complications (eg, parapneumonic effusion, empyema, necrotising pneumonia, and lung abscess) and systemic complications (eg, bacteraemia, metastatic infection, multiorgan failure, acute respiratory distress syndrome, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and, rarely, death). Complicated community-acquired pneumonia should be suspected in any child with pneumonia not responding to appropriate antibiotic treatment within 48-72 h. Common causative organisms are Streptoc…

The number of patients with pneumonia has been increasing as the population ages, and most fatal pneumonia cases are the elderly with aspiration pneumonia. Although aspiration pneumonia leads to poor short- and long-term prognosis, there have been no practical ways to diagnose it precisely. Persistent subclinical aspiration without any subjective symptoms is problematic in clinical practice in patients with aspiration pneumonia, and physicians can only use aspiration risks such as brain infarction to diagnose aspiration pneumonia. Anaerobes have been believed to be major causative pathogens in…
