Cerebral oxygenation responses to obstructive sleep apnea in cognitively normal older adults: a study using simultaneous polysomnography and functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) can cause intermittent cerebral hypoxia that may impair brain health. However, widely used clinical indicators such as the Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) and peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO₂) may not accurately capture cerebral oxygen dynamics. In this study, we recorded frontal lobe cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO₂) using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) while concurrently acquiring overnight polysomnography (PSG) in 23 cognitively normal older adults (13 with OSA and 10 controls). Our results demonstrated that rSO₂ was negatively associated with apnea…

Night-to-Night Changes in REM Sleep Are Associated With Symptom Severity in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Two-Night Home Polysomnography Study.

Sleep disturbances are highly prevalent in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), yet conventional single-night polysomnography (PSG) provides limited insight into dynamic sleep regulatory processes. Using the Synaptic Homeostasis Hypothesis as a conceptual framework, we quantified night-to-night changes (Δ; Night 2 - Night 1) in sleep architecture across two consecutive nights of home-based PSG and examined their association with ASD symptom severity. Seventy-nine children with ASD, stratified into mild ASD (M-ASD, n = 35) and moderate-to-severe ASD (MS-ASD, n = 44) subgroups using the Childhood Aut…

Randomised trial of home sleep apnoea testing compared to in-lab polysomnography for the evaluation of obstructive sleep apnoea in children: rationale and study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) affects 1-5% of the paediatric population, including 55-90% of children with Down syndrome (DS), and has been associated with negative effects on neurocognitive development, cardiovascular health, immune development and quality of life. In-lab attended polysomnography (PSG) is currently the gold standard for the diagnosis of OSA in children, but it poses challenges due to the burden on families and limited testing facilities. Home sleep apnoea testing (HSAT), an unattended sleep test done at home, is an accepted alternative for adults but lacks suff…

Sensitivity and specificity of telemedicine-based long-term pulse-oximetry in comparison with cardiorespiratory polygraphy and polysomnography in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome.

We investigated the feasibility of night-time pulse-oximetry telemedicine. We compared polysomnography (PSG) as the gold standard with simultaneously recorded pulse-oximetry from a wrist pulse-oximeter. The results were evaluated by a sleep specialist and compared with outpatient polygraphy. A total of 135 consecutive patients (mean age 55 years, mean body mass index 31.6 kg/m(2)) were studied. Patients with minor, moderate and severe PSG findings were grouped together and compared to those without PSG findings; the resulting sensitivity was 1 and specificity 0.35. In addition, patients with a…

[Objective value of adenotonsillectomy in the child. A prospective study of incidence of tonsillitis, snoring, pulse oximetry and polysomnography and general development before and after adenotonsillectomy].

65 children were analysed prospectively before and after adeno-tonsillectomy to determine the incidence of upper airway infections, snoring and nocturnal obstructive symptoms. The weight and height percentiles were also determined before and after adeno-tonsillectomy. The Oxygen Desaturation Index (ODI) was measured in 27 children suspected of having a sleep apnea syndrome. In six of these children polysomnographic studies were carried out. A statistically significant reduction (p < 0,005) of upper airway infections could be seen six to twelve months after adeno-tonsillectomy. In 25 children (

Polysomnography demonstrates worse sleep in children and adolescents with disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) compared to healthy children: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Children with disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) often report poor sleep. However, the presence of sleep disorders and polysomnography (PSG) characteristics have not been previously described. Thus, we aimed to compare PSG changes in children with DGBI compared to healthy controls and describe sleep disorders in DGBI patients. METHODS: We conducted retrospective review of patients ages 7-19 y who met Rome 4 criteria for DGBI without organic GI, systemic conditions and underwent PSG at Cincinnati Children's Sleep Center within one year of the GI clinic visit. We collected de…

Sleep disordered breathing in chronic stroke survivors. A study of the long term follow-up of the SCOPES cohort using home based polysomnography.

Prevalence of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) (apnea-hypopnea index [AHI] > or = 5) in acute stroke patients ranges between 44% and 95%, compared to the community prevalence, 9 to 35% for women and 8 to 57% for men [age range 30-60 years]. Limited data exists beyond 3 months following stroke. We assessed the prevalence of SDB amongst stroke survivors at 3 years and compared results to data reported in normal and elderly populations. 90/143 eligible stroke survivors from an existing cohort underwent a home based sleep study. Mean age of the 78 subjects with a valid sleep study was 64 years (SD

Equivalence versus pragmatic trials for the economic evaluation of information and communication technologies; the case of polysomnography under telesurveillance in the diagnosis of sleep apnea syndrome.

This article deals with the choice of the appropriate protocols for the early economic evaluation of information and communication technologies, equivalence trial versus pragmatic trial. The reasoning put forward here is based on a concrete interrogation relative to polysomnography (PSG), a key diagnostic test for sleep apnoea syndrome (SAS). Is PSG under tele-surveillance more efficient than ambulatory PSG to diagnose SAS? After analyzing and discussing both advantages and limits of these two kinds of trial, we showed that one or the other can be used to obtain appropriate results. But in thi…

Age-related changes in sleep architecture: Effects of body mass index, sex, and mental health in community-dwelling adults using at-home polysomnography.

BACKGROUND: Sleep is a critical component of human health, influencing cognitive, physical, and psychological well-being. Sleep architecture changes significantly with age. Odds Ratio Product (ORP) is a novel continuous index of sleep depth, which provides insights into age-related changes in sleep depth. OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the interaction of sex, body mass index (BMI) and mental on age-related changes in sleep architecture, measured with ORP in community-dwelling adults using at-home polysomnography (PSG). METHODS: We measured sleep architecture using ORP in 195 middle-aged…
