Cross-sectional imaging in a case of adventitial cystic disease of the popliteal artery.

Adventitial cystic disease of the popliteal artery is an unusual condition of uncertain etiology, in which a mucin-containing cyst forms in the wall of the artery and produces lower extremity claudication, typically in young and middle-aged men. A diagnosis of adventitial cystic disease of the popliteal artery was made preoperatively in a 47-year-old man by means of several imaging modalities, including angiography, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasound. The pathological findings confirmed the suggested diagnosis.

A Large Calf Mass in a Patient with Rheumatoid Arthritis: Giant Pannus Filling Baker's Cyst.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) presents a significant challenge among autoimmune diseases, affecting millions globally with diverse clinical manifestations, primarily targeting joints and inducing inflammation, pain, and deformities. In some cases, it leads to the formation of Bakers cysts, fluid-filled bursae in the popliteal region, resulting from chronic inflammation of the synovial membrane and subsequent pannus growth. Our case, a young female patient with RA, presenting with calf mass, highlights this complex interplay. She presented with large swelling and pain in her left calf region which

Popliteal Artery Cystic Adventitial Disease: Early Lessons in Treatment.

BACKGROUND: We present 6 patients who had operative repair of symptomatic popliteal cystic adventitial disease (pCAD). Developmental theories for pCAD and surgical alternatives are presented. METHODS: All patients who had repair of pCAD over the past 3 years are included. RESULTS: Three patients had cyst excision alone, whereas the remaining 3 had cyst and artery excision with interposition vein grafting. Cyst recurrence occurred in 2 patients who had cyst excision alone. Four of the patients had a patent communication between the cyst and the joint capsule. CONCLUSIONS: Our small series su…

Case Report of a Complex Lateral Femorotibial Joint Injury With Popliteal Tendonitis in a Foal.

A two-month-old, Spanish breed, foal was referred with right hind limb lameness of two weeks duration. Clinical examinations confirmed a complex combination of lesions within the lateral femorotibial joint, including a subchondral bone cyst in the lateral femoral condyle, a severe popliteal tendonitis, and a delayed cartilage detachment of the lateral femoral condyle. Because of the complex association of these lesions, poor prognosis for an athletic career was given to the owner. Four years later, the filly is pasture sound. Lesions of the popliteal tendon in the horse are uncommon. The popli

Adventitial cystic disease of the popliteal artery treated by bypass graft utilizing the short saphenous vein: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Adventitial cystic disease is relatively rare vascular disease, frequently occurred in the popliteal artery. No definitive treatment has been established yet. PRENTATION OF CASE: A 53-year-old woman presenting intermittent claudication of the right leg was diagnosed as adventitial cystic disease of popliteal artery. Percutaneous balloon dilation yielded an immediate recurrence. The disease was successfully treated by bypass grafting utilizing the short saphenous vein to replace the part of the popliteal artery containing the adventitial cyst. No postoperative complication was fo

"Arthrography diagnosis of synovial cysts of the knee.".

A lateral view of the knee in 90 degree flexion can reveal popliteal cysts which do not show on routine arthrography. Flexion causes transfer of intra-articular fluid to the posterior portion of the joint space, lowering pressure within the cyst and allowing it to fill with contrast media.

Semimembranosus ganglion cyst.

Ganglion cysts are tumor-like lesions in the soft tissues, generated by mucoid degeneration of the joint capsule, tendon or tendon sheaths on the dorsum of hand, wrist and foot. However, an intratendinous origin for a ganglion cyst is extremely rare. During dissection of the popliteal fossa, a cyst of 2.5 cm×2 cm×0.5 cm was observed in the tendon of right semimembranosus, 3.5 cm above the insertion of the muscle. Contrast X-ray revealed the cyst as not communicating with the knee joint or any adjacent bursae. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of ganglion cyst.

Magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasonographic evaluation of the patients with knee osteoarthritis: a comparative study.

The objectives of the present work were (1) to establish the prevalence of the abnormalities detected by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasonography (US); and (2) to compare these imaging techniques in detail. The study group consisted of 58 patients with symptomatic knee OA and 16 volunteer control subjects. Knee joint was evaluated for femoral condylar cartilage changes, effusion, synovial thickening and popliteal cysts using MRI and US. All knees with OA had cartilage abnormalities on US examinations and normal cartilage was detected in less than 3% of these knees by MRI. Majority …

Cystic lesions around the knee joint: MR imaging findings.

A wide variety of cystic lesions may be encountered in the soft tissues and bones during routine MR imaging of the knee. These lesions represent encapsulated fluid collections and exhibit low signal intensity on T1-weighted images and high signal intensity on T2-weighted images because of their high content of free water. Many lesions produce clinical features suggestive of internal derangement of the knee, so correct MR diagnosis is needed to avoid unnecessary arthroscopy and to guide specific therapy. The purpose of this essay is to illustrate the MR appearance of cystic lesions that can be

Noninvasive vascular imaging in the diagnosis and treatment of adventitial cystic disease of the popliteal artery.

This brief case report describes the successful outcome after surgical excision of multiple adventitial cysts of the popliteal artery in a 75-year-old man with rapidly worsening claudication. It highlights several unsettled points concerning the diagnosis, cause, and management of cystic adventitial disease of the popliteal artery and compares duplex ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance angiography in the noninvasive diagnosis and treatment of this condition.

Ethanol injection sclerotherapy for Baker's cyst, thyroglossal duct cyst, and branchial cleft cyst.

Six patients with Baker's cysts, 3 with branchial cleft cysts, and 2 with thyroglossal duct cysts were treated with percutaneous aspiration and absolute ethanol sclerotherapy using a 7-French pigtail catheter. Cystography was performed before ethanol injection to confirm that there was no extravasation and that it was a monocystic lesion. One recurrence of a Baker's cyst was revealed in follow-up examinations, which ranged from 11 months to 36 months (mean, 25 months). The major complication of hypoesthesia of the popliteal region was observed in 1 patient treated for Baker's cyst. The results

[Popliteal artery aneurysm: surgical and endovascular therapy].

Aneurysms of the popliteal artery are the most common form of peripheral aneurysm with an incidence of 70-80 %. An enlargement of the popliteal artery of more than 50% of the original diameter is defined as a popliteal artery aneurysm and is found mainly in male patients older than 65 years of age. The incidence is 1%, in 50% of cases is bilateral and in up to 50% in association with other large vessel aneurysms (e.g. abdominal aorta). Differential diagnoses are Baker's cyst, cystic adventitial disease, entrapment syndrome and epitheloid hemangioma. One third of all diagnosed popliteal artery

Ultrasound for suspected Baker's cyst: A test of limited clinical value?

INTRODUCTION: Patients with posterior knee swellings are commonly encountered in clinical practice with the vast majority referred for an ultrasound scan to assess for a clinically suspected Baker's cyst. AIMS: Our aim was to determine the incidence of different pathologies in patients investigated for a posterior knee swelling of a clinically suspected Baker's cyst using ultrasound. We also wanted to investigate the incidence of significant pathologies in the popliteal fossa to assess whether the ultrasound scan findings influenced patient management. METHODOLOGY: Retrospective analysis was

Cystic adventitial disease of the popliteal artery.

Cystic adventitial disease (CAD) is a rare condition caused by a cystic abnormality of the adventitia. It is most commonly found in young or middle-aged adults without significant risk factors for peripheral arterial disease. The disease usually affects the popliteal artery and can present with intermittent claudication. We present a case of CAD of the popliteal artery in a 65-year-old man and describe its treatment. For symptomatic patients, treatment of choice remains surgical resection of the cyst through a posterior approach.

Unusual solitary ganglion cysts of the anterior segment of the lateral meniscus.

Generally, ganglion or synovial cysts have been reported to originate from numerous structures in and around the knee joint, including the anterior cruciate ligament, posterior cruciate ligament, popliteal tendon, and menisci. Nevertheless, a ganglion is not a synovial cyst and there is no synovial lining. Meniscal cysts present a subgroup of ganglion cysts that occur in association with meniscal tears. We report 2 cases of unusual meniscal cyst from the anterior segment of the lateral meniscus without any meniscal tear and discuss the possibility of their pathogenesis and treatment.

Cystic Adventitial Disease of the Popliteal Vein: A Case Report.

Venous cystic adventitial disease (VCAD) is a rare vascular anomaly located in the common femoral vein in most cases. We describe the case of a 59-year-old female patient with right leg edema who was misdiagnosed with deep vein thrombosis of the lower extremity at another hospital. Magnetic resonance angiography revealed a round mass in the popliteal vein, with a narrow lumen. Considering the location of the lesion, absence of a history of deep venous thrombosis and trauma, and clinical manifestations, the diagnosis is likely a popliteal vein adventitial cyst. Segmental popliteal vein resectio
