Background: Negative dysphotopsias (ND) are visual aberrations associated with in-the-bag optic intraocular lens (IOL) placement, causing arc-shaped or linear shadows. Reverse optic capture (ROC) is employed to prevent ND, yet it poses the risk of posterior capsular opacification (PCO) which usually develops within 2-5 years post-surgery due to the lens epithelial cells (LECs) proliferation and migration onto the posterior capsule. This can lead to a cloudy or hazy appearance in the visual field. Early identification of posterior capsular opacities is crucial to ensure timely intervention and

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous lens absorption is rare and usually occurs in eyes with certain syndromes, hyper-mature cataracts, and ocular trauma. The application of an implantable collamer lens (ICL) is widely performed in patients with high myopia for refractive correction. This study reports a case of spontaneous lens absorption after ICL implantation.
CASE SUMMARY: A 23-year-old man was referred with complaints of poor vision in his left eye. The patient had undergone binocular ICL implantation for refractive correction of high myopia 1.5 years prior. Approximately 10 months later, he experien

Sixteen cases of previously reported culture-proven Propionibacterium-associated endophthalmitis after extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) are reviewed. The inflammation was observed 2 to 10 months after surgery and occurred after laser posterior capsulotomy in four cases. Clinically, it appeared as a chronic iridocyclitis characterized by granulomatous-appearing keratic precipitates (5 cases), hypopyon (10 cases), and a white plaque on the posterior capsule or intraocular lens (IOL) implant (8 cases). Response to corticosteroid treatment was transient. Surgical intervention was required …

PURPOSE: To evaluate the incidence of intra- and postoperative complications of transconjunctival 25-gauge (25G) sutureless pars plicata lensectomy.
METHODS: The medical records of patients <12 months of age with congenital cataracts who underwent 25G sutureless lensectomy were reviewed retrospectively. Patients were evaluated at postoperative days 1, 7, 15, 30, 60, and 90 and every 3 months thereafter. Visual acuity outcomes and intra- and postoperative complications were described and analyzed.
RESULTS: A total of 72 eyes of 44 infants were included; 28 patients (64%) had bilateral catarac

PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to evaluate factors possibly effecting the posterior capsule opacification (PCO), after extra-capsular cataract extraction with the posterior chamber intra-ocular lens (IOL) implantation. Age of patients, refractive errors, technique of cataract extraction, intra- and postoperative complications and coexisting diseases were taken into consideration. In 1992-98 posterior laser Nd:YAG capsulotomy was performed in 222 eyes of 222 patients (134 women and 88 men) previously operated in 1st and IInd Eye Clinic. PCO occurred in 5.8% patients, who underwent cataract e

The incidence of retinal detachment following cataract extraction was studied in a myopic population of 803 eyes, which were selected by a measurement of the axial length out of 3,184 cases consecutively operated on. The incidence of retinal detachment following intracapsular cataract extraction was 1.5%, which was very similar to that after extracapsular cataract extraction: 1.8%, in the lowest range of date published in the literature. The incidence of retinal detachment of the pseudophakic myopic eye (operated on with the extracapsular technique, combined with implantation of a posterior ch

PURPOSE: To describe intentional placement of intraocular lens haptics in the ciliary sulcus of patients with uveitis who are at high risk for postoperative posterior synechiae and lens dislocation.
METHODS: We reviewed our experience with 16 eyes of 12 patients with uveitis who underwent cataract surgery with ciliary sulcus fixation of intraocular lenses. Patients were followed for a median of 16.5 months (range, 9 to 44 months) after surgery. We evaluated eyes for surgical technique and the following preoperative and postoperative factors: best-corrected visual acuity, intraocular pressure,

METHODS: Phacoemulsification cataract surgery was performed in one eye of 120 patients with senile cataract in this prospective study. They were randomized to implantation of either a hydrophilic acrylic IOL (BL27; Bausch & Lomb, Rochester, NY, USA) or a hydrophobic acrylic IOL (AcrySof) SA60AT; Alcon Laboratories, Fort Worth, TX, USA). BACKGROUND: Glaucoma patients who need filtering surgery very often have cataracts as well. Combined glaucoma/cataract surgery entails a higher rate of complications and may endanger the results of glaucoma surgery.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective study investigated 223 eyes in 169 patients with uncontrolled glaucoma and cataracts. Each eye received filtering surgery and simultaneous phacoemulsification with implantation of a foldable posterior chamber lens. Mean follow-up was 32.5 months (6-57).
RESULTS: Mean intraocular pressure was lowered from 24.6 +/- 6.2 to 16.4 +/- 3.4 mmHg (

PURPOSE: Laboratory studies in experimental animals suggest that use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs decreases the incidence of posterior capsular opacification (PCO) following cataract surgery. Recently the incidence of PCO following cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation was reported to be no different following postoperative treatment with diclofenac sodium 0.1% (Voltaren, Ciba Vision) or with dexamethasone 0.1% (Maxidex, Alcon). We studied the incidence of PCO in patients following treatment with diclofenac 0.1% and ketorolac tromethamine 0.5% (Acular, Allergan) ophthal
