Green tea extract supplementation does not modify plasma concentration of F2-isoprostanes in women who are postmenopause: Findings from a randomized controlled trial.

Green tea extract (GTE) is a potential mitigator of oxidative stress, and F2-isoprostanes are a reliable biomarker of oxidative stress. Genetic polymorphisms in the catechol-o-methyltransferase (COMT) gene may modify tea catechin metabolism, prolonging exposure. We hypothesized that GTE supplementation would decrease plasma F2-isoprostanes concentrations compared with placebo and that participants with the COMT genotype polymorphisms would experience a more significant expression of this outcome. This study was a secondary analysis of the Minnesota Green Tea Trial, a randomized placebo-control

Being in postmenopause may be associated with lower prevalence of COVID-19 symptoms among women over 45 years of age with and without HIV.

OBJECTIVE: Menopause is associated with COVID-19 severity among women without HIV (WWoH). Yet, little is known about menopause and COVID-19 … We combined women across HIV status and compared symptoms during premenopause/perimenopause versus postmenopause. Having any COVID-19 symptom was more common among women in premenopause/perimenopause (89%) than in postmenopause (70%). Compared with women in postmenopause, women in premenopause/perimenopause had higher odds of reporting muscle aches, fatigue, a …

Prevention of postmenopausal bone loss: six-year results from the Early Postmenopausal Intervention Cohort Study.

We report the effect of continuous treatment with alendronate for 6 yr vs. placebo in the Early Postmenopausal Intervention Cohort study. A total of 1609 healthy, early postmenopausal women were recruited; we describe results for the 585 women who received continuous placebo or alendronate (2.5 or 5 mg) daily for 6 yr. Bone mineral density (BMD) was evaluated at the lumbar spine, hip, forearm, and total body at baseline and annually thereafter. Bone turnover markers were measured every 6 months from baseline to yr 2 and annually thereafter. Adverse experiences, including upper gastrointestinal

Predictors of postmenopausal body mass index and waist hip ratio in the oklahoma postmenopausal health disparities study.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of the current study has been to examine systematically the respective roles of nutrition, exercise, menopausal weight gain, moderate drinking and smoking as determinants of body mass index (BMI) and waist hip ratio (WHR) in a setting in which the role of race or ethnic group could be simultaneously or individually evaluated as predictors of BMI and WHR. Because the use of estrogen replacement has been reported to affect estimates of body fat mass in postmenopausal women, endocrine factors have also been evaluated. METHODS: The design is cross-sectional with historical pro

Prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a major public health concern characterised by rapid loss of bone mineral density due to estrogen deficiency, leading to increased risk of fragility fractures. This article reviews current clinical strategies for the prevention and treatment of the condition in postmenopausal women. Primary prevention discusses lifestyle modification, including adequate dietary intake of calcium and vitamin D, regular weight-bearing exercise and cessation of smoking and excess alcohol consumption. For women at elevated fracture risk, pharmacological interventions are essential. T

Strategies for denosumab discontinuation in postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Discontinuation of denosumab in postmenopausal osteoporosis causes a rebound phenomenon with a rapid increase in bone turnover markers and accelerated bone loss, often within 6-12 months. Without an appropriate relay therapy, up-to 10% of the patients experience multiple vertebral fractures. This phenomenon is linked to a multifactorial dysregulation of bone remodelling. In 2021, the European Calcified Tissue Society (ECTS) proposed guidelines for discontinuing denosumab in patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis. Our review covers the latest research on risk stratification for rebound pheno

Repercussions of gastrointestinal microbiota in postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis, characterized by diminished bone mass and microarchitectural degeneration, increases fracture risk, particularly in postmenopausal women (postmenopausal osteoporosis), leading to reduced quality of life and increased mortality. Recent research has highlighted the gut-bone axis, showing how the gut microbiota influences bone health through immune modulation, endocrine regulation, and calcium absorption. Dysbiosis, an imbalance in gut microbiota (e.g., decreased Bacteroidetes and increased Firmicutes), has been linked to osteoporosis by enhancing osteoclast activity and bone loss.

An Unexpected Discovery: Postmenopausal Pyloric Endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a benign, estrogen-dependent condition, usually occurring in menstruating and, rarely, in postmenopausal women, in which endometrial glands and stroma grow ectopically outside the uterus. Most often, ectopic endometrial tissue is found within the pelvis and nearby structures. However, endometrial tissue within the upper gastrointestinal tract is very rare and can be a source of bleeding and abdominal pain. Here, we report a case of a 71-year-old postmenopausal woman with hematochezia and diffuse abdominal pain, who was found to have pyloric endometriosis, the pathogenesis of w

Prolactinoma in postmenopausal women: a systematic review.

IMPORTANCE: Prolactinomas occurring during the reproductive period exhibit a characteristic behavior. There are, however, gaps in the literature regarding the behavior of these tumors after menopause. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to review and characterize the influence of menopause on prolactinoma behavior. EVIDENCE REVIEW: A systematic review of observational prospective or retrospective studies and clinical trials on prolactinomas was conducted in two situations: tumors diagnosed in the reproductive period (before menopause), with follow-up in the postmenopausal period, or prolactinomas di

A Comprehensive Review on Postmenopausal Osteoporosis in Women.

In India, a sizeable share of the female population is in the postmenopausal or perimenopausal stage. Issues related to aging in women are an increased risk of broken bones, a decrease in cortical and cancellous bone thickness, and a decrease in bone mineral density (BMD). Osteoporosis has a severely detrimental effect on the life of women, lowering their standard of living, decreasing the quality of their lives, and increasing their likelihood of fractures. It can be terrible if the fracture affects the hip or the spine since it could leave you immobile. Postmenopausal osteoporosis is related

A Case of Ovarian Hyperthecosis in a Postmenopausal Woman.

We report a case of a 55-year-old postmenopausal woman who presented with symptoms of fatigue, male pattern hair loss, and hirsutism over 3 years. Investigations showed elevated total testosterone levels of 5.0 nmol/L (1.44 ng/mL; range, 0.3-3.1 nmol/L) using Beckman-Unicel-DXI-800 immunoassay. Testosterone levels were repeated by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and were found to be elevated at 7.3 nmol/L (2.10 ng/mL). Estradiol was detectable and free androgen index was elevated. Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate levels and androstenedione were within normal range, suggesting a no

Approach to Investigation of Hyperandrogenism in a Postmenopausal Woman.

Postmenopausal hyperandrogenism is a condition caused by relative or absolute androgen excess originating from the ovaries and/or the adrenal glands. Hirsutism, in other words, increased terminal hair growth in androgen-dependent areas of the body, is considered the most effective measure of hyperandrogenism in women. Other symptoms can be acne and androgenic alopecia or the development of virilization, including clitoromegaly. Postmenopausal hyperandrogenism may also be associated with metabolic disorders such as abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. Mild hyperandrogenic
