A 37-year-old, never-smoker, pregnant woman diagnosed with Graves' disease who had stable thyroid eye disease (TED) before pregnancy presented with aggravated proptosis and eyelid swelling at 13 weeks of pregnancy. Despite the administration of local triamcinolone and 3 cycles of corticosteroid pulse therapy from 25 to 28 weeks, the patient's visual acuity decline necessitated postpartum orbital decompression surgery. Although thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) receptor antibody levels decreased during the mid- to late term of pregnancy, the TED worsened. This finding suggests that factors othe

PURPOSE: The rising prevalence of postpartum depression (PPD) is harmful to women and families. While there is a growing body of evidence suggesting an association between PPD and autoimmune diseases (ADs), the direction of causality remains uncertain. Therefore, Mendelian randomization (MR) study was employed to investigate the potential causal relationship between the two.
METHODS: This study utilized large-scale genome-wide association study genetic pooled data from two major databases: the IEU OpenGWAS project and the FinnGen databases. The causal analysis methods used inverse variance we

Vitamin D is a steroid hormone traditionally connected to phosphocalcium metabolism. The discovery of pleiotropic expression of its receptor and of the enzymes involved in its metabolism has led to the exploration of the other roles of this vitamin. The influence of vitamin D on autoimmune disease-namely, on autoimmune thyroid disease-has been widely studied. Most of the existing data support a relationship between vitamin D deficiency and a greater tendency for development and/or higher titers of antibodies linked to Hashimoto's thyroiditis, Graves' disease, and/or postpartum thyroiditis. How…

BACKGROUND: Thyroid disorders are common and often under-recognized. Evidence on public thyroid health literacy in Palestine is limited. This study assessed public knowledge of thyroid disorders among adults in the West Bank, Palestine.
METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted from May 1 to August 1, 2025, among adults (≥18 years) residing in the West Bank. Participants with current or prior health-professional training or employment in healthcare were excluded. Non-probability convenience sampling was used through social media distribution (Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram). Knowle

The presence of autoimmune gastritis was investigated in 54 women with postpartum thyroiditis. Parietal cell antibodies (PCA) specific against H+, K(+)-adenosine triphosphatase (EC 3.6.1.36) were found in 18 women during pregnancy; in 10 of them, a 2-9-fold increase in the PCA level was observed in the postpartum period. At a 5-year follow-up, the initially PCA-positive women still had elevated antibody levels. Hypergastrinemia and low pepsinogen levels were noted in 4 women. In 2 of these women low serum vitamin B12 levels had developed. In 6 of 9 PCA-positive women examined by gastroscopy, b…

OBJECTIVES: Thyroid disorders are among the most clinically relevant endocrine conditions during pregnancy and the puerperal period. Given their clinical importance, this article aims to contextualize the role of thyroid dysfunction, particularly subclinical hypothyroidism, during these periods and to analyze the ongoing debate regarding screening and treatment based on international guideline recommendations.
METHODS: This narrative literature review was conducted using the SciELO, PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, UpToDate, and Virtual Health Library databases. In addition, official documents from th

To accurately evaluate thyroid disorders in pregnancy, the physician must understand the physiologic changes that occur both in thyroid gland size and in thyroid function tests. The effect of thyrotoxicosis on pregnancy outcome largely depends on whether metabolic control is achieved. Women who become euthyroid on treatment usually can expect satisfactory outcomes. Propylthiouracil is considered to be the drug of choice for treating thyrotoxicosis during pregnancy. Because of the significant risk of hypothyroidism and obvious goiter in the infant, the use of iodide should be reserved for sever

During pregnancy, the body undergoes a major adaptation process as a result of the interaction between mother, placenta and fetus. Major anatomical and histological changes are produced in the pituitary, with an increase of up to 40% in the size of the gland. There are wide variations in the function of the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid axis that effect iodine balance, the overall activity of the gland, as well as transport of thyroid hormones in plasma and peripheral metabolism of thyroid hormones. The incidence of goiter and thyroid nodules increases throughout pregnancy. The management of

Triacylglycerols as the sources of cholesterol, the primary precursor of steroid synthesis, are one of the factors that limit the speed of steroidogenesis. Synthesis and resynthesis of triacylglycerols depend, in addition to other factors, on phosphatid hydrolysis that is controlled during pregnancy by placentary ALP (Sumikawa et al., 1987) and the FFA pool in the systemic blood stream. Enzymes participating in FFA release from the fat tissue are affected by thyroid hormones and TSH (Mayes, 1977). In view of the above facts, this work was aimed at the observation of changes in alkaline phospha

The management of Graves' disease (GD) in women of childbearing potential has multiple specific complexities. Many factors are involved, which differ at the various stages from preconception, conception, first trimester, later pregnancy, postpartum and lactation, with both maternal and foetal considerations. The incidence and significance of the risks incurred from antithyroid drugs (ATDs) in pregnancy have been re-evaluated recently and must be balanced against the risks of uncontrolled hyperthyroidism during childbearing years. Contraception is advised until hyperthyroidism is controlled. AT

BACKGROUND: Thyroid dysfunction is associated with cognitive impairment, mood disturbance, and postnatal depression. Sufficient thyroid hormone synthesis requires adequate intake of iodine, selenium, and iron. Iodine deficiency was historically a problem for New Zealand, and initiatives were introduced to overcome the problem: (1) mandatory fortification of all bread (except organic) with iodized salt (2009) and (2) provision of subsidized iodine supplements for pregnant and breastfeeding women (2010). Subsequent to these initiatives, most adults and children have adequate iodine status; howev

We report a 28-year-old woman with refractory hypoglycemia, hypotension, and profound fatigue found to have panhypopituitarism secondary to Sheehan syndrome. Although she had a remote history of postpartum hemorrhage marked by agalactia and secondary amenorrhea, her diagnosis was delayed until she developed an adrenal crisis in the setting of acute pyelonephritis. Comprehensive endocrine testing confirmed secondary adrenal insufficiency, central hypothyroidism, hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, and lactotroph failure; Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a partially empty sella consistent with

A rare case is presented of a woman with spontaneous recovery from hypopituitarism following postpartum hemorrhage. One month after delivery, serum thyroid hormone, TSH, LH and FSH levels were low, and their secretion from the pituitary gland responded poorly to the TRH and LH-RH tests. Pituitary TSH response was normal 3 months after delivery. In the LH-RH test, pituitary LH and FSH response returned to normal at 2 months. Pituitary GH secretion and serum cortisol levels induced by ITT already responded normally one month postpartum. Excessive secretion of pituitary PRL was observed 3 months

Postpartum amenorrhea associated with other symptoms and signs of hypopituitarism, such as inability to lactate, weakness, easy fatigability, sexual-hair loss, and clinical evidence of hypothyroidism, were found in two female patients with the antecedent of postpartum hemorrhage. The baseline values of the gonadal, thyroid, and glucocorticoid hormones were all consistently lower than normal. The serum levels of the pituitary hormones were low, and the responses to standard stimulatory tests were either insignificant or blunted. Plane skull films and conventional sella tomography did not reveal

During pregnancy the thyroid should adapt itself to the availability of the least quantities of iodides necessary to synthesis hormones and to several other possible modifications such as a rise in the thyroxine-binding globulin and the thyroid stimulating effect of beta-hCG. An increase in size of the thyroid gland is very common. The interpretation of the parameters used to diagnose abnormalities of thyroid function can be carried out. Although the development of the fetal thyroid can take place independently of the maternal thyroid behaviour, an abnormal thyroid function in the mother can n
