Predictors of severe psychological distress trajectory after nuclear disaster: evidence from the Fukushima Health Management Survey.

OBJECTIVES: The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, which occurred after the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in March 2011, may have a considerable long-term impact on the lives of area residents. The aims of this study were to determine the trajectories of psychological distress using 3-year consecutive data, and to find predictive factors of severe distress that may also prove useful for public health intervention. METHODS: Data were obtained on 12 371 residents who were registered in the municipalities categorised as complete evacuation areas for 3 years after the disas

Physical violence in the couple relationship: a contribution toward the analysis of the context.

This article proposes an analysis of the contextual elements of physical violence occurring within the couple relationship. According to this analysis, the batterer acquires power of a moral nature while the victim plays the role of the accused. After violence occurs, reconciliation with the batterer relieves the victim of her role as the suspect, the guilty one. In the course of the analysis, it is argued that the perception of physical violence in all its forms is characterized by dichotomies that are typical of our culture (subject/object, mind/body, ethics/knowledge, and so on). Attention

Classification of chronic pain and spinal cord stimulation response using machine learning in magnetoencephalography data.

BACKGROUND: Due to the complexity of pain, involving physical, psychological, emotional and social aspects, we are still unable to objectively quantify or fully understand this subjective experience. An increasing number of studies have attempted to identify biomarkers of pain using brain imaging tools like magnetoencephalography (MEG). In this study, we used machine learning to investigate the potential of MEG data as a biomarker for chronic pain and used this biomarker to quantify spinal cord stimulation (SCS) treatment effect. METHODS: The study population consisted of 25 patients with SCS

θ power responses in mild Alzheimer's disease during an auditory oddball paradigm: lack of theta enhancement during stimulus processing.

There is evidence that theta responses reflect cognitive performance: good performances are associated with a decrease in tonic theta power as well as an increase in phasic theta power. In the present study, both tonic and phasic theta activity were analysed in 22 patients with mild Alzheimer's disease (AD), and 16 healthy elderly controls. Single-trial theta power responses were evaluated by an active auditory oddball paradigm along an early poststimulus window (0-250 ms) and a late time window (250-500 ms), and then compared to prestimulus theta power during both target tone and standard ton

Restoring Form and Function to the Partial Hand Amputee: Prosthetic Options from the Fingertip to the Palm.

Partial hand amputations are the most common upper extremity amputations and affect individuals across a spectrum of socioeconomic and geographic backgrounds. Prosthetic devices can provide straightforward solutions to the devastating aesthetic, functional, psychological, and social deficits caused by these injuries. However, because of the recent development of multiple partial hand prosthetic devices, many hand providers remain unaware of their applicability in practice. This article highlights the various classes of partial hand prostheses currently available, including passive functional,

Affective disorders, anxiety disorders and psychological distress in non-drinkers.

BACKGROUND: Non-drinkers have elevated levels of psychological distress but a recent study reported no elevation in prevalence of diagnosed disorders. We aimed to determine the prevalence of affective and anxiety disorders (from the CIDI-A) in current abstainers and contrast results with findings for psychological distress (K10) in the same sample. METHODS: Cross-sectional, representative household survey of adult Australians. RESULTS: Non-/occasional drinkers had higher levels of psychological distress than light drinkers, and distress in heavy drinkers was even higher. Heavy drinkers also

Human-centric participation paradigm: exploring the enjoyment experience of cultural heritage virtual museum based on system usability and VR technology.

As cultural heritage digitisation accelerates, virtual museums have emerged as powerful platforms for enriching public engagement with culture. Yet, the underlying psychological mechanisms that drive user enjoyment in these environments remain underexplored. Drawing on the Hedonic Motivation System Adoption Model (HMSAM) and Self-Determination Theory (SDT), this study develops an integrated theoretical framework to explain how system usability shapes user enjoyment through five core psychological constructs: perceived usefulness, curiosity, joy, control, and immersion. It also investigates the

Rumination and avoidance as predictors of prolonged grief, depression, and posttraumatic stress in female widowed survivors of war.

This study examined independent contributions of rumination and experiential avoidance in predicting symptoms of psychological distress among female widowed survivors of war. A decade after the war in Kosovo, 100 widowed survivors of war completed measures of rumination, experiential avoidance, depression, posttraumatic stress, and prolonged grief. Results showed that both rumination and experiential avoidance significantly predicted the symptom severity of prolonged grief, depression, and posttraumatic stress. Furthermore, rumination accounted for additional variance above and beyond experien

EEG trajectories across the first two years of life are associated with maternal depression, anxiety, and perceived stress.

Maternal psychological distress (e.g., symptoms of anxiety and depression; perceived stress levels) may influence early neurodevelopmental trajectories of offspring, yet research in community samples with high stress exposures is relatively limited. The current study sought to examine longitudinal trajectories of high-frequency EEG oscillations (β & γ bands) in infants at 2, 6, 9, 12, and 24 months and associations with maternal psychological distress. Using a longitudinal prospective cohort design, 211 families were followed during the first two years of life. Multilevel Mixed Effects models

A simple version of resting-state heart rate variability interpretation for patients with affective disorders: A four-pattern perspective.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is often considered as a biomarker reflecting well-being, but the clinical meaning of short-term resting-state HRV is not sufficiently defined. We assume that combining several common HRV indices as "HRV patterns" and using the patterns for screening purposes are meaningful approaches. Resting-state 5-min HRV data of 424 subjects were analyzed. Four of the most commonly used HRV indices were considered: standard deviation of normal-to-normal RR intervals, low-frequency power, high-frequency power and the ratio of low-frequency to high-frequency power. According to

Social hierarchy and depression: the role of emotion suppression.

Position in the social hierarchy is a major determinant of health outcomes. We examined the associations between aspects of social hierarchy and depressive symptoms with a specific focus on one potential psychological mechanism: emotion suppression. Suppressing negative emotion has mental health costs, but individuals with low social power and low social status may use these strategies to avoid conflict. Study 1 assessed perceived social power, tendency to suppress negative emotion, and depressive symptoms in a community sample of women. Low social power was related to greater depressive sympt

Controlled deep breathing technique intervention effects on resting EEG, subjective psychological distress, and executive function performance in young adults.

Controlled breathing techniques have been widely investigated for their role in emotional regulation; however, their effects on resting-state neural oscillatory activity and psychological distress remain insufficiently characterized. The present study examined whether a Controlled Deep Breathing Technique (CDBT) intervention modulates resting-state electroencephalographic (EEG) activity and subjective psychological distress in healthy adults. Forty healthy adults (ages 18 to 40 years) were randomly assigned to an experimental (CDBT) or control (natural breathing) intervention group for 20 min.

Empowering Patients: The Role of Shared Treatment Decision-Making in Advanced Bladder Cancer-A Podcast.

Shared treatment decision-making refers to an approach to care in which patients and their clinicians work in partnership to choose between treatment options, or delay/forgo treatment, concordant with patient values and considering the best available evidence. Research in various diseases, including cancer, has shown that patients who feel informed in treatment decisions have greater satisfaction with their medical care, better adherence to treatment, and better quality-of-life outcomes. The treatment landscape for advanced bladder cancer has evolved in recent years and several treatment optio

Three Lessons Learned About Power and Improving Recruitment of Underrepresented Populations in Clinical Trials.

This Open Forum is relevant for investigators who conduct research with historically understudied and marginalized populations. The authors introduce a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs clinical trial that experienced challenges with recruitment of African American or Black veterans and was terminated for not achieving its recruitment goals. The role of power dynamics in clinical research is discussed, specifically how unequal distributions of power may create recruitment challenges. The authors summarize three lessons learned and offer recommendations for sharing power equitably between inv

Enacting an "Empowerment Approach" After Sexual Assault: The Views and Beliefs of Forensic Nurse Examiners and Crisis Support Workers.

BACKGROUND: Sexual violence is a profoundly disempowering experience. It is essential that survivors are offered access to comprehensive medical care, psychological support, and follow-up in a way that offers them a high level of choice and control. AIMS: There has been little research into how practitioners working in the context of immediate postassault understand empowerment and reflect this in their care delivery. This study sought to explore how crisis support workers and forensic nurse examiners conceive how they enact an "empowerment approach" in a sexual assault referral center (SARC)
