Effect of Alpha-Glucosyl-Hesperidin Consumption on Lens Sclerosis and Presbyopia.

Presbyopia is characterized by a decline in the ability to accommodate the lens. The most commonly accepted theory for the onset of presbyopia is an age-related increase in the stiffness of the lens. However, the cause of lens sclerosis remains unclear. With age, water microcirculation in the lens could change because of an increase in intracellular pressure. In the lens, the intracellular pressure is controlled by the Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid (TRPV) 1 and TRPV4 feedback pathways. In this study, we tried to elucidate that administration of α-glucosyl-hesperidin (G-Hsd), previousl…

Quantitative assessment of photic phenomena in the presbyopia-correcting intraocular lens.

This was a prospective study to evaluate the feasibility of the photic phenomena test (PPT) for quantifying glare, halo, and starburst. We compared two presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses (IOLs), the Symfony IOL and the PanOptix IOL, as well as the monofocal Clareon IOL in 111 IOL-implanted eyes of 111 patients who underwent the PPT 1 month postoperatively. The reproducibility of photic phenomena with the PPT was assessed in 39 multifocal IOL-implanted eyes of 20 patients and among the examiners. Patients with ocular diseases, except for refractive errors, were excluded. The mean values o…

From Presbyopia to Cataracts: A Critical Review on Dysfunctional Lens Syndrome.

Dysfunctional lens syndrome (DLS) is a term coined to describe the natural aging changes in the crystalline lens. Different alterations in the refractive properties and transparency of the lens are produced during the development of presbyopia and cataract, such as changes in internal high order aberrations or an increase in ocular forward scattering, with a potentially significant impact on clinical measures, including visual acuity and contrast sensitivity. Objective technologies have emerged to solve the limits of current methods for the grading of the lens aging, which have been linked to …

Effect of Optical Defocus on Choroidal Thickness in Healthy Adults With Presbyopia.

PURPOSE: To investigate changes in subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) induced by retinal defocus in presbyopic adults. METHODS: Thirty-se … thickening of SFCT, while hyperopic defocus caused thinning of SFCT. This implies that uncorrected presbyopia, which is associated with hyperopic retinal defocus for near objects and which is highly prevalent in the developing world, would likely be associated with choroidal thinning and possibly reduced choroidal blood flow with prolonged periods in a near …

Impact of Presbyopia and Its Correction in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

Presbyopia affects more than 1 billion people worldwide, and the number is growing rapidly due to the aging global population. Uncorrected presbyopia is the world's leading cause of vision impairment, and as with other causes. The burden falls unfairly on low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), in which rates of presbyopic correction are as low as 10%. The importance of presbyopia as a cause of vision impairment is further underscored by the fact that it strikes at the heart of the productive working years, although it can be safely and effectively treated with a pair of inexpensive glasses.…

Correlation between ocular biometry and amplitude of accommodation in early presbyopia.

PURPOSE: To determine the correlation between ocular biometric parameters and the amplitude of accommodation in early presbyopic eyes. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed on 62 eyes of 62 subjects aged from 40 to 49 years. All participants were emmetropic (spherical equivalent refractive error within 0.50 D of emmetropia with astigmatism less than 0.75 D) and best spectacle-corrected visual acuity was 20/20. Only the right eyes of all subjects were included for analysis. In all subjects a complete ophthalmologic examination was performed and the amplitude of accommodation (AA) w

Analysis of the optical performance of presbyopia treatments with the defocus transfer function.

PURPOSE: A variety of techniques for treating presbyopia are available. However, these techniques are often disparate in the mechanisms used to cope with the lack of accommodation. Multizone-refractive, diffractive, and apodized intraocular lens technologies are currently being used. This article evaluates the optical performance of these markedly different technologies in a simple and comparable manner. METHODS: The Defocus Transfer Function is a mathematical technique for illustrating the Optical Transfer Function for all levels of defocus. By calculating the Defocus Transfer Function, the …

Broken down by age and sex. The optical correction of presbyopia revisited.

New transverse clinical data are presented which describe the time course of presbyopia, as indicated by the temporal change in magnitude of the binocular spectacle add, in normally sighted male and female Caucasian subjects. An initial steep increase in add requirement beginning in the early forties becomes relatively slower but still of significance beyond the mid-fifties. This observation is correlated with the age-related progressive decline in the amplitude of accommodation, itself a consequence of physiological changes in the crystalline lens and capsule. The continuing need for an incre…

Straylight-Based Evaluation of Glare in Two Presbyopia-Correcting Intraocular Lenses.

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses (IOLs) provide a complete spectrum of vision but frequently induce dysphotopsia due to multiple focal points and diffractive designs. Standard straylight assessments using a C-Quant meter at a 7° visual angle often show no significant differences between evaluated IOLs. Therefore, evaluating glare effects effectively requires device modifications to demonstrate differences across lower visual angles. This study evaluates glare from the diffractive designs of two presbyopia-correcting IOLs. ABSTRACT: MATERIAL AND METHODS: This in v…

Isolated Bilateral Foveal Hypoplasia Diagnosed in Adulthood Following Evaluation for Presbyopia.

Foveal hypoplasia, also known as fovea plana, is an uncommon congenital anomaly caused by incomplete foveal differentiation during ocular development. Although it is usually diagnosed in childhood, particularly in patients with associated ocular or systemic disorders, isolated forms may remain unrecognized until adulthood. We report the case of a 45-year-old woman who presented for the first time with persistent near-vision difficulty, initially attributed to presbyopia. Despite appropriate refractive correction, her visual symptoms did not fully improve. Ophthalmic examination revealed bilate…
