The Safety of Fluoride Compounds and Their Effect on the Human Body-A Narrative Review.

Fluoride is one of the elements commonly present in the human environment. Due to its characteristics, it is very widely used in medicine, dentistry, industry or agriculture. On the other hand, its universality possesses a real threat to the human body in the form of acute and chronic poisoning. The aim of this paper is to characterize the properties of fluoride and its effects on the human body, as well as the sources of its occurrence. Particular emphasis is placed on the safety of its use and optimal dosage intake, which prevents accumulation and reduces its potential side effects. The posi

Quaternary ammonium compounds in dental restorative materials.

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) have been used widely in medicine, owing to their antimicrobial properties. They also have strong permeability, stable performance, low skin irritation, low toxicity, low corrosion, lasting biological effects and so on, comparing with other antimicrobial agents. At the end of last century, polymerizable quaternary ammonium antimicrobial monomers had been synthesized and applied in dentistry, in order to reduce or prevent microbial biofilm formation on dental materials surfaces. This review aims to discuss the current progress of QACs applied in composite re

Eruptive tooth movement--the current state of knowledge.

How the dentition erupts, and what controls it, is fundamental to almost all aspects of clinical dentistry, yet the mechanisms behind this have not yet been fully elucidated. When the process continues into space that has been created through toothwear or tooth loss, problems in placing restorations can be encountered. This review examines the possible mechanisms of tooth eruption. Differences between processes in animals and humans are highlighted. The limitations of conclusions drawn from animal studies are then discussed with reference to human dental conditions. The differing forms of over

Pathophysiology of acquired dental diseases of the horse.

Periodontitis, infundibular necrosis, and periapical infection are dental diseases commonly affecting adult horses. Routine dental examinations and care may help to prevent these diseases. Further investigation of the treatment of horses with these diseases using local antimicrobial therapy, restorative dentistry, and endodontic therapy is needed. An understanding of the pathogenesis of these diseases aids in diagnosis and treatment. Gingival hyperplasia and odontogenic tumors are uncommon but should remain in a list of differential diagnoses when examining a horse with pertinent clinical sign

Nursing habits and dental decay in infants: "nursing bottle caries".

The decay-producing capabilities of certain foods can be influenced by eating habits. When a habit of frequent nocturnal bottle or breast feeding is maintained beyond a year of age, the potential for gross dental decay in very young children is established. Bovine milk, milk formulas and human breast milk have all been implicated in the condition of "nursing bottle caries," because of their lactose content. Additional sweeteners in the nursing bottle, the use of fruit juices or the use of honey-dipped pacifiers can also cause "nursing bottle caries." "Nursing bottle caries" can be prevented th

Movement disorders of the stomatognathic system: A blind spot between dentistry and medicine.

Movement disorders of the stomatognathic system include oromandibular dystonia (OMD), oral dyskinesia, sleep/awake bruxism, functional (psychogenic) stomatognathic movement disorders (FSMDs), tremors, and hemimasticatory spasm (HMS). Most patients first consult dentists or oral surgeons. The differential diagnoses of these involuntary movements require both neurological and dental knowledge and experience, and some of these movement disorders are likely to be diagnosed as bruxism or temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) by dental professionals. However, excepting movement disorder specialists, ne
